Friday ASSURE

I. Analyze the Learners: I will be teaching about the Olympics to a 3rd grade class, 10

boys and 12 girls, 80% white, 15% African-American and 5% Latino. Two of the

students have IEPs for learning disabilities. The students have previously studied

geography of the United States and a few other countries. This unit will build on this

prior knowledge.

II. State Objectives: My third grade students will identify and implement health and fitness

tips to become an Olympic athlete, using a YouTube video, GoNoodle, and Pinterest,

with 95% accuracy by the end of the day.

III. Select Methods, Media and Materials: To meet the differing needs of the students in

my third grade class, I will use the following methods, media, and materials throughout

to ensure student success:

a. YouTube Video- I will use a pre-made teaching video that I have created, to teach

students about health and fitness tricks to become an Olympic athlete. This will

allow them to enjoy the content more and relate concepts to themselves, through

the use of young students in the video.

b. GoNoodle- I will use this to allow students to conduct physical activity they can

easily do at home, that they might see in the summer Olympics. By having the

students participate in these activities, I am helping them meet the fitness portion

of the lesson.

c. Pinterest- Students will access the board I have created to learn some Olympic

games they can play at home or do while watching the Olympics to become more

physically fit.

d. Health Journals- I will have the students keep track of their activity and diet for

the following week, to see how well they implemented what we learned to their

lives.

e. Facebook- I will use this to have students post videos of the student implementing

the task they learned on Pinterest.

IV. Utilize Media and Materials: I will preview all materials before the start of the lesson. I

will check to make sure all media materials are working properly. This will include

checking to make sure the YouTube video plays, that GoNoodle works on the

SmartBoard, and that the Pinterest pins are working properly. I will also have the health

journals in a basket by the door, so that students can retrieve them as they leave and

return them every morning for the following week. In addition, I will have the students

desks placed in pods, so that they can see to watch the video, ask questions to their peers,

and to allow enough room for the students to participate in GoNoodle.

V. Require Learner Participation: To engage the students in the lesson of the day, I will

ask them a discussion question, “How do athletes train, eat, and stay fit for the

Olympics.” They will discuss this in their pods, and then they will figure out one answer

to share with the class. After this, I will confirm or disprove their predictions by showing

them a YouTube teaching video I created for them. I have created this video to teach

students health and fitness tricks to become an Olympic athlete. This will allow them

enjoy the content more and relate concepts to themselves, through the use of young

students in the video.

After watching the video, I will have the pod groups discuss what they think their

group should keep track of for the following week in their health journal. They will base

these ideas off of the video they watched. They will use these journals over the next

week. Finally, I will give the students a take home assignment in addition to their

journals. They will look at the Pinterest board I have created and pick one of the at home

activities from the board to implement. Then they will video themselves performing an

activity from Pinterest, using a flip video camera from the classroom. Once they perform

the activity, they will post the video on the class Facebook page. They will comment on

how they felt about the activity and whether it met the health or fitness portion of

becoming an Olympic athlete.

VI. Evaluate and Revise: To assess my third grade students throughout, I will do the

following:

a. Encourage class discussion

b. Walk around the room to verify all students are participating and that the

discussion of what to use on their journals involves evidence from class

discussion and the video.

c. Stimulate implementation of concepts by using GoNoodle and asking every

student to participate.

d. Questioning during GoNoodle. about what the sport or activity we are doing is

most like in the Olympic Games.

e. Watch videos on Facebook page and look at comments to see if students are

applying the concepts at home.

f. Look at student’s health journals to make sure they mention 1-2 things from class

and apply them daily.
