Rugby Roundup Last Friday saw the highly anticipated rearranged Woodham

Family rugby tournament. Having won the Mayflower tournament in November, the squad had been training regularly

since, desperate to show their abilities. With heavy wind or rain alternating intermittently, we were to play seven 7-minute games, luckily, on the fast and firm 3G pitches. This set us in great stead, as our team had been selected around direct and

elusive running. From the opening whistle we had strong carries from Toll and Wenborn, resulting in our opening try and the

confidence in the squad swelled. We won the opening fixture 10 tries to 3. As the tournament progressed, we continued to

score heavily and defend doggedly, with some brilliant sweeping passing play and fast counter-attacking rugby off of our formidable defence. Glover and Kostic seemingly had a

telepathic connection for some wonderful passing support play. Our toughest game came at the hands of Abacus Primary, who

were 3-1 up within minutes. The determination and resilience of our team was shown and direct running from Dackomb and

Comitti drew us back into the game. Just like Arsenal in 2003-04, the only blemish on our perfect record was this draw (6-6). From this point service was resumed, our defence tightened; direct and elusive running continued; and telepathic under-

standing in support showed our class. We won the tournament, progressing to the county finals in a fortnight, scoring 51 tries

in total and conceding only 28. The spirit and nature of this team are a real credit to the school, as was the parental

support from the touchline in such adverse conditions. Mrs Robinson is also certain that Mr Tweedie’s contagious

enthusiasm also helped play a part in our victory!

Afternoon Tea This week we were joined by ‘Number 24’ on the class

registers for our afternoon tea! As ever, the children were very excited to make their way into the staff room (usually off-limits)

and to take their places on the comfy staff chairs! Everyone had a great time and enjoyed the sweet treats as well as sharing one

another’s work.

Visit to The Synagogue This week Year 5 enjoyed a visit to the synagogue in Southend. It was a brilliant day and lots of information was learnt to help the children with their Judaism topic. The children’s behaviour was exemplary and they really enjoyed themselves. They were very

interactive and listened well to the guest speakers. They also asked lots of questions and enjoyed exploring the synagogue.

Year 4 PE – Writtle College Activities On Wednesday afternoon, 4P had a very exciting afternoon with Mr Brass and his Sports Science college students who had planned an

outdoor session with several exciting activities. The children took part in lots of different activities, such as team building exercises,

mathematical exercises and communication exercises. The children really enjoyed this different approach to a PE lesson.

Schools Ministry Billericay Assembly On Wednesday, Charlotte and Sue, from the Schools Ministry

Team led our assembly. They started by sharing the Bible story about Jesus being tempted in the desert for forty days and

nights. The children thought about Lent in the same way as their Maths - there are some things that they take away and some things

they may add. Some of the school shared the things they have given up for Lent such as chocolate, electronic devices and tomato ketchup. The children enjoyed having Julian visit them again and

impressed them with his piano skills. Thank you to Julian, Charlotte and Sue for a very thought-provoking assembly.

World Book Day 2020 Today saw the return of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Where’s Wally and the Cat in the Hat (to name just a

few)! It was of course World Book Day! No World Book Day is now complete without having a D.E.A.R day… and today was no different. Whenever the bell

rang, the whole school fell silent (including the teachers and teaching assistants) and read. This has certainly become one of the children’s favourite reading activities! During the day, the classes also took part in an

Interhouse Reading Quiz, which tested their knowledge of Harry Potter and Roald Dahl as well as other favourite children’s authors. Thank you to Mr Graves for creating the quiz.

Throughout the day, all of the classes took part in some wonderful reading themed activities, such as Story Puppets, Stories in a Jar and creating their own Book Nook! The activities were very inspiring and it was wonderful

to see so many children so enthusiastic about their favourite books. All of the children’s hard work built up to creating a live library in their classrooms. During the afternoon, the children had the opportunity to visit other classrooms and see the work they had produced during the day and hopefully came back with a few ideas of new

books they would like to read! World Book Day also saw the librarians hard at work in the newly-redecorated school library. They spoke first to each class in Year 3 and explained how the books are organised in the library, before helping them find some new books. During the morning, they were then collecting different children from each class who have not borrowed a

book from the library before and helped them to pick some new reading books. We hope that they managed to find some books to inspire you!

It was fantastic to see so many of the children and staff in their reading themed outfits and thank you to all the parents for being so creative and to Miss Carroll, for organising the day.

CVL Netball Tournament - Round 2 On Wednesday morning, our Year 6 teams took part in the CVL

Round 2 Netball tournament, which was held at Billericay School. We played against 10 schools including Downham, St Peter’s, St

John’s and Quilters, to name just a few. Both teams played fantastically well and have improved

immensely since the beginning of the year. It was lovely to see the two teams gel and be so supportive to one another. The

teams played in two different pools and then were both involved in the Play Offs. Some great interceptions and several brilliant shots were made! The teams produced some excellent results too! Overall, Buttsbury 1 finished 1st and Buttsbury 2 finished 6th. We look forward to the next tournament in the very near

future. A big thank to Mrs Coughlan, Miss Paine, Mrs Bohle and Mrs Crees for supporting the event with transport. Additional thanks go to Mrs Coughlan and Miss Paine for supporting the girls continuously at training sessions and to Miss Pretty, our

team manager and coach! Well done Buttsbury!

Maureen Lee - Dementia Friends On Thursday morning this week, the School Councillors had a visit from Maureen Lee

from Dementia Friends. This was a follow-up session after her first visit back in

September and was an opportunity for the children to discuss and share everything

they, and we, have been doing as a school to become more dementia friendly. Maureen was particularly impressed with how much everyone had been doing at home and in the

community to spread awareness. We are now very close to submitting our evidence

of our work towards the ‘Billericay Dementia Friendly Schools’ Award’.

Well done to all of our school councillors and a huge thank you to Maureen for taking

the time to come and see us again!
