I am very grateful to Mr Waight, Mr Harvey, Miss Nejad, Miss Lowe and Mr Styles for giving up their holiday to run such a fantastic trip. This is just one of the myriad of opportunities available in Year 12 and 13 that we highlighted at our very well attended Sixth Form Open Evening this week. This area is blessed with many excellent post-16 providers, but naturally we believe that the academic and enrichment experience on offer at Rosebery is second to none. As a result of their dedication and the personalised and relentless support from their teachers, our Sixth Form students thrive in a challenging but secure environment, they are terrific role models for our younger students, and become articulate, compassionate and empathetic young women capable of leading their local and wider community. Next week, the shortlisted Head Girl candidates pitch to their peers, and I am very excited about hearing their thoughts on how they will contribute to the Sixth Form and the school as a whole. In the light of my comments in last week’s newsletter relating to the school’s finances, I am even more grateful to the volunteers of the PSA who ran the very successful film night last Friday evening and to those parents who came in this week to begin preparations for the Christmas Fair which is now less than a month away. You will receive raffle tickets via your daughter and we very much hope that you will feel able to purchase these to support this, our biggest fundraiser of the year. Next Friday sees our annual Mufti Day and further details of items which we would like everyone to bring in to support the Fair can be found later in this newsletter. Thank you for all your support. Finally, can I draw your attention to the new Student Blog which is a fantastic addition to our Hub. It is written by the students, for the students, and we hope it will become an important means of communication and a celebration of all the ways our students make this such a vibrant and inspiring school to belong to. Have a lovely weekend. Ros Allen@RoseberyHT Blog: headteacherroseberyschool

Talisa Yorke 12D - I have recently released a song for my Grannie who has Cancer. It's called 'Prove It Wrong'. I am trying to raise funds for the Princess Alice Hospice & Macmillan Cancer Support, so if you could buy the song through iTunes or want to donate, please see the links at the bottom of this page. Read the story behind ‘Prove It Wrong’ In July 2015 my family were given the devastating news that my Grannie had terminal Cancer, with a prognosis of 12 months left to live.

I have always played the saxophone and taught myself guitar, so I decided to record my Grannies favourite songs onto a CD to listen to, whilst going through the gruelling sessions of Chemotherapy at the Marsden Hospital in Sutton.

Grannie is a fighter, my love & admiration for her is that she takes on all of life’s challenges - be that the early death of my granddad, to embracing technology with iPads, iPhones & emails, to which I have been her ICT support person.

This was the first time in our family that Cancer, or “Doris” as Grannie calls it, had touched my life. I was heartbroken. I wanted to convey my support and love to Grannie in the only way I knew how, by writing a song.

The song was originally called ‘You're a fighter’ and I gave it to Grannie in August 2015 to take to chemo sessions. Whilst we knew nothing could be done about the Cancer, we knew with Grannie’s strength, character and with our strong family behind her, she would beat the prognosis of 12 months.

Chemo was gruelling, side effects heart-breaking but not once did my Grannie falter - what an amazing inspiration to me, a 16 year old girl. I am and forever will be in awe of her.

Well, she did it!

It is now November 2016, Grannie is 70 (great party), I am nearly 17 (hopefully a great party) and Grannie is now happy to share her song & story. We have changed the title to ‘Prove It Wrong’ because she did, we are now 15 months and counting…

The song is available on iTunes £0.99 and Spotify where 60% of the proceeds are going to, Princess Alice Hospice in Esher & Macmillan Nurses; who are truly amazing. If you'd like to donate more to both of these fabulous causes then I have set up a just giving page for both, (see below).

If this song can help or inspire anyone else going through Cancer, either to beat it or prolong their prognosis, then both Grannie and I will feel truly happy.

You can take a look at my short promotional video on the link below. We would like to reach as many people as possible,

so if you could share this post with all your friends and family that would be great.

So far Talisa has already raised an impressive £300, but would appreciate any further support people can offer.

Year 11 GCSE Media Studies

Unit 2 Controlled Assessment Deadlines

Year 11 GCSE Media Studies students are now in the final stages of completing their GCSE Media Studies coursework and I wanted

to keep you updated with the coming deadlines, details of which can be found below. Please note that after these final deadlines

no further improvements can be made to this work as this would go beyond what the exam board allows.

Students can access the current level of their coursework via their individual class tracker that has been shared on One Drive and

I strongly recommend that students discusses this current grade with you while there is still time to make any improvements that

may be needed. The majority of feedback for pieces that have been completed so far has been given back to students, with the

remaining piece (last seven pages from 12 Page Research and Planning) by next week, and to help support students in meeting

these deadlines, weekly boosters are run for Media Studies every Tuesday Lunchtime and Thursday 3pm-4pm in C20. We have

also adjusted our lesson planning to allow this work to continue during class until Friday 3rd February. After this, we must move

on to the examination unit: Unit 1 TV Game Shows.

December Mock Exam – TV Game Shows

Students are currently working on their coursework in lessons and this will continue into January and students will then start the

exam unit TV Game Shows. Despite this, they will complete a mock exam in December on TV Game Shows. Last year this proved

to be a valuable experience as allowed students a head start in the topic, as well as understanding the structure of the exam. This

will mean, however, that outcomes for students will be lower than we are aiming for in the summer exams.

The exam is structured with a client’s brief (Preliminary Material) that is given to students four weeks before the exam. During

this time, all formal teaching has to cease and students are expected to independently research and plan in response to the brief.

In the exam, they will be asked four questions based on the brief, assessing students’ ability to research, plan and respond to a

client’s brief. Students are well equipped to complete this task as the knowledge and understanding of the exam is centred on

the same four key concepts from their coursework; media language, audience, representation and institution. They need to now

apply this knowledge to TV Game Shows, using the resources given to them in their mock exam packs. To support students in

preparing for this mock exam successfully, they have were given their mock Preliminary Material and revision pack prior to half

term and they can also attend booster sessions if they have any questions or concerns.

House News

We started off the year with some great House events that lots of the girls got involved in. In total 680 items donated

at Harvest which were given to the Food Bank and Wallington Day Centre who were extremely grateful. Our first Sports

Festival was a success with lots of Year 7s, 8s and 9s out playing at lunch time or supporting their form. Our next House

event coming up is the Music Festival. Thank you to everyone who has entered on their own, or as a group, to perform

on the 8th or 9th of November. We want as many students as possible to join their House choir so the Disney songs will

sound amazing on the 10th – just ask your House Captains about rehearsal days. The Christmas countdown has begun

and the Rosebery Christmas Fair will be on the 25th November; mufti day is next Friday, 11th November when students

can bring in items for various stalls. Here’s the current table of house points:

This week the Glyn Surrey SCITT held its first Get Into Teaching event. The event provided an opportunity for potential ITT trainees to find out more information about teaching, how to

apply and what specifically the SCITT can offer by way of support, guidance and training. Our next event takes place on 8th November, 6.00-8.00pm at the Hilton Doubletree Hotel in

Woking, as part of the Surrey SCITT Network.

This event is aimed at anyone interested in either primary or secondary teaching. If you would like to find out more about the ITT programmes run by the SCITT, please visit the website:
