Frida Kahlo: some important points

I choose this topic to discuss because I was surprised when I started toresearch the life of her. Her life shows how an event can change things forever.Frida was born on July 6th in 1907. But she claimed to have been born on July7th 1910 to coincide with the date of the Mexican Revolution and also tomake herself younger.She had a painful event at an early age, at the age of 6, Frida contractedpolio, which left her right foot crippled. This would lead her to wear trousersand longs skirts.

She was able to attend very prestigious schools. Escuela NationalPreparatoria School was one of the best. Frida was one of only 35 girls of2000 students. She was very smart.She studied the natural sciences; she wanted to become a doctor. It was atthe Escuela that she first became acquainted with the ideas of socialism andNational Socialism.In 1925 would become the day in which Fridas destiny was changedforever again. Frida was returning home from school in a bus, and this buswas stuck broadside by a trolley car. Frida suffered sever injuries, a brokenpelvic bone, and spinal column. The accident caused permanent futurehospitalizations, approximately 30 operations.

It was because of this accident that she started to paint and became anartist. A large mirror was mounted on the underside of the bed canopy soFrida could see herself. Thats why the vast majority were self-portraits.

She met Diego Rivera, a muralist in her school. Frida fell madly in love; sheshocked a friend by telling her that she wanted to have a child of him. Fridaspied Diego when he painted that great mural. But at that time they neverspoke.

Frida and Diego met for the second time in a communist party. Shortly afterthey married, but only attended the wedding frida's father, because all the

other people were against that love. Diego was too fat and old to Frida.

Diego was 42 years old and Frida was 22. Fridas father understood thatDiego had the financial means to provide for his daughters medical needs.

Their marriage was traumatic, her love was sick. Unfortunately the injuriesthat she had suffered in the 1925 accident made it impossible for her togive birth. Frida had 4 abortions during her life.

In 1935 Frida discovered that her husband was having an affair with hersister, Cristina Kahlo. She felt betrayed by the two people she loved most ofall. Since then her marriage was never the same. Rivera did not change hisways, and Kahlo started having her own extramarital affairs, both with menand women.

Frida had a short romance with Trotsky, where he stayed for a time in theirhouse with his wife. Diego Rivera suffered with this treason and could neverforgive Frida.

The two traveled the world through his works of art. At first it was Diego'sfamous, but later she had her chance to be recognized even in France

At the time Kilos and Riveras marriage was once more difficult. She hadthe money to have independent of her husband. They divorced but whenshe returned to the house and they reconciled, they lead separate lives inthe same house. Frida kept to herself on one side and Diego on the other,with their own studies.

Frida loved to smoke, drink tequila and sing. Despite all of the physical andemotional pain in her life, she was an outgoing person. Frida was charmingand attractive.

In 1948, Diego Rivera began an affair with the actress Maria Felix thatcaused a public scandal. Convince that the actress would marry him, Diegoasked Frida for divorce, but Frida desired to possess Diego forever, so shecalled the newspapers to tell them the illicit relationship. The next day thestory broke on the front page creating a flaming scandal. They sided withFrida and to save her career, Mara quickly ended the affair.

Frida was near death, so Lola Alvarez Bravo wanted to honor her lifetimewith her first solo exhibition in Mexico. Frida created the invitations herself.

The day before the exhibition opening, her health deteriorated. But she

wanted to attend the opening so her bed was loaded into the back of atruck, driven to the exhibition and set up in the center of the gallery.

In 1953, the doctors were forced to amputate her right leg below the knee.In 1954 Frida died when she was 47 years old in the Blue House where shewas born. This Blue house now is a museum.
