“PaN-Y” claus is coming to town The November FPHL player of the month had another sterling weekend Dec. 6-7 at Battle Creek. Panacek is now on a 7-game goal scoring streak and logged eight points for the Thunderbirds over the weekend. Panacek now has 32 points and is on pace to obliterate his career high of 54 points from one season ago. He is the team leader in goals, assists, points and points per game. The Vysocany, CZE native now has 100 points in his career in the “Fed,” all of them with Carolina except for seven goals and seven assists with North Shore in 2017-2018.

“AwaY” in a manger Carolina remains perfect on the road this season after a two-game sweep over Battle Creek this past weekend. They are the only team in the league who remains perfect on the road this season. Furthermore, all three of Henry Dill’s shutouts have come away from The Annex this season. Carolina has a +26 goal differential this season (33 G, 7 GA) when outside of Winston-Salem, which is also a league-high for road teams. The Thunderbirds have only two more games on the road this calendar year at Mentor (Dec. 21-22).

You better watch out I’m telling you why… Steve MacIntyre is expected to be in the lineup for both games with weekend vs. Elmira. MacIntyre has one assist in two games this season, but saw increased ice time vs. Battle Creek last Saturday. He now has eight points through 15 games in the FPHL. The Brock, Sask. native played 91 games in the NHL, splitting time between Edmonton, Florida and Pittsburgh. MacIntyre also logged 61 games with the ECHL’s Charlotte Checkers in 2003-2004.

Dashing through the show The Thunderbirds are the top of the FPHL with 42 standings points. The franchise is also on a record-setting rate for wins and is off to the best start in the team’s three year history. Carolina is currently riding a 10-game win streak and has one 14 of their first 15 to begin the year. Furthermore, if the pace continues, Carolina is on pace to eclipse 50 wins during the regular season which would be even better than last year’s record setting team.

G-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-oal ria The Thunderbirds have scored the most goals of any team in the FPHL this season at 84 and have allowed the fewest goals this season at only 24. That puts Carolina at a league best +60 goal differential. The next closest is Watertown’s +30. The production is coming from throughout the lineup as well. To date, Jay Kenney is the only player with more than five games played who has not scored a goal. Every player on the active roster has at least one assist this season. “It’s not about who scores the goals,” said head coach Andre Niec on Tuesday, “it’s about winning the games, but it helps when everyone is working hard and it’s nice to get rewarded for that work.”

The new year starts at home The Carolina Thunderbirds will play at Mentor Dec. 20 and 21 but then will not play a true road game until Jan. 26 at Mentor again. The Thunderbirds will host Columbus on New Year’s Eve for a special 8:35 p.m. puck drop. They will then play two neutral site games in Bloomington, Ill., against the Danbury Hat Tricks. Carolina will then host Mentor twice and Delaware once over the next three weekends as part of the season’s longest homestand, six games over three weekends. After the end of the homestand, the Thunderbirds will play four road games in seven days at Mentor(26) and Danbury (30- Feb. 1). The Thunderbirds will match the four-game, seven-day road trip again in March with three games in Port Huron and one game in Columbus.

Shoot your shot Carolina has outshot every opponent they’ve played this season except Elmira (32-32, Oct. 25) and Columbus (40-30, Nov. 22). In each of their past six games, the Thunderbirds have amassed 50 or more shots on net. Over that six game span, the Thunderbirds have scored 48 goals, averaging eight goals per game in that time span. On Thanksgiving Thursday, Carolina tied the NHL record (’91, Bruins) with 73 shots on goal. The following game, Nov. 29, the Thunderbirds broke that record at set the franchise record for most shots in one game with 79.

shorthanded The Thunderbirds have scored five shorthanded goals this season with Petr Panacek scoring the last two. That rankes them third in the league behind Mentor and Columbus. Carolina is now averaging a shorthanded goal once every three games. The Thunderbirds also have the top penalty kill in the FPHL which is operating at 59/64, 92.2%. The Thunderbirds are the only PK unit in the FPHL that is operating above 90% to date.

The Carolina Thunderbirds currently sit at 98 franchise wins between their regular season and playoff successes. If Carolina wins both games against Elmira this season, the Thunderbirds will collect 100 wins in franchise history. For head coach Andre Niec, this would mark his 100th win as the Thunderbirds head coach as well. Carolina does not have a losing record vs. any team in the FPHL all-time and capped a historic 49-win regular season last year. The Thunderbirds would be the fastest team to 100 wins of any team currently in the FPHL.

Henry dill stopping the pill Thunderbirds goalie Henry Dill has been lights out in nine games this season for the Thunderbirds. Dill ranks second in the FPHL in wins with eight (Austyn Roudebush, MEN, 9) and leads the league in GAA (min. 7 games played) and save percentage (min. 7 games played). Dill is a Columbus, Ohio native who played last year with the Thunderbirds as well before splitting time in Macon and Roanoke of the SPHL. Currently, Dill is the top of the FPHL in shutouts with three, including a back-to-back shutout weekend vs. Elmira (Oct. 25-26). “I love frustrating them, I love frustrating the fans,” remarked Dill after his first shutout of the season. Dill has remained a stalwart leader on this team and is undoubtedly one of the most touted figures in FPHL hockey,

THE ANNEX The Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex is a multi-purpose 3,050-seat arena that is home to the Carolina Thunderbirds. Originally called Coliseum Annex (as it is built across from the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum), “the Annex” has been home to hockey since it was built in 1989. Aside from being home to the Carolina Thunderbirds, the building is also an inside venue for the Dixie Classic Fair and has hosted world-famous concerts, like the Gatlin Brothers. The Annex is located across the street from BB&T Field, home of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons football team and is three exits down the road from historic Bowman Gray Stadium.

HOCKEy ‘N’ HEELS The Thunderbirds hosted a unique event on Thursday, Dec. 12, the second-annual Hockey ‘N’ Heels. This event is an opportunity for ladies to learn more about how the game operates, the equipment and terminology associated with the game as well as to enjoy a time to meet and greet select players and staff members. The event has hosted 200 people in two years and has been one of the top events the team has hosted in its three-year history.

    Teddy bear toss

The Thunderbirds will celebrate their third annual Teddy Bear Toss game on Saturday vs. Elmira. The first goal the Thunderbirds score on Saturday will trigger all fans in attendance to throw their stuffed animals onto the ice and those will then be collected and given to children in need this holiday season. Last season the team collected just shy of 3000 teddy bears.

Elmira has been through a rollercoaster of a season so far, stumbling out of the gate only a 0-2-1-1 start. However, things have gotten better since then. The Enforcers swept the East-leading Watertown Wolves last weekend to surge back over .500 at 7-6-1-1. The Enforcers only have a +5 goal differential, having allowed 53 goals this year. Former Enforcers goalie Joe Murdaca was called up to Knoxville (SPHL) and currently has a 6-2 record for the Ice Bears.

HEAD COACH ANDRE NIEC Coach Niec returns to Winston-Salem for his third season behind the bench with the Thunderbirds. Last season, the Czech-native logged a record of 44-5-1-3 with the Birds, guiding the team to a first-place regular season finish and a Commissioner’s Cup championship. As a player, Niec enjoyed a 17-year professional career across Austria, Czech Republic, France, England and the United States. Niec played two seasons with the Great Falls Americans of the AWHL after a playing the 1999-2000 season in the Czech-under-20 league. After the four seasons in Austria, Niec played another stint in the US with the Bloomington PrairieThunder in 2006. During the ’06-’07 season, Niec played ten games in the SPHL, three games with the Fayetteville Fireantz (now the Marksmen) and seven games with the Jacksonville Barracudas. In 2015, Niec returned to the states with the Berlin (N.H.) River Drivers of the FHL and logged 50 points (7g, 43a) during the year.
