Defl ated? The right amount of air in your tires can help in your fuel consumption efforts. When tires are not infl ated enough, they generate too much heat, wear out faster, and give you much more resistance against the roads. Make sure when checking your air pressure the tires are warm. Check to see how much pressure should be in your tires, make sure that you do not overfi ll. Doing this regularly will give you a smooth ride, and help improve your fuel consumption.

By Kevin DiakiwTh e friends and family of a

man murdered in Cloverdale two years ago are appealing for public assistance in fi nding the person who gunned him down.

Christopher Whitmee was murdered at about 11 p.m. May 16, 2009 in the washroom of the Legacy Showroom in the Clover Inn at 176 Street and 57 Avenue.

A second shooting victim, a 28-year-old Surrey man, was known to police.

Investigators are now saying with certainty that Whitmee was not the intended target.

“Oft en times people don’t approach police in the fi rst in-stance aft er a serious crime like homicide. We have experienced that when we make a plea to the public it triggers something that causes people to have a change

of heart and they de-cide to come forward to police,” Cpl. Dale Carr spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investiga-tion Team said.

It is believed by investigators based on the information known at this time that there may be a link to drugs and gangs, however, in-vestigators are still working to-ward confi rming that informa-tion.

Police are asking anyone who was in the show lounge that night, who has not yet spoken with po-lice to come forward.

Last Saturday, Christopher’s 11-year-old daughter Lexus Bur-kholder-Whitmee joined family

members and friends as they put up fl yers advertising a reward as an aid to the in-vestigation.

Th ey are posting the fl yers in sur-rounding communi-ties as well.

“Our goal is that someone sees the fl yer and it refreshes a memory from that terrible incident two

years ago and then reports it to police” said Heather Burkholder, Lexus’ mom.

Anyone with information is asked to call IHIT Tip Line at 1-877-551-IHIT. If you wish to remain anonymous please call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

ternoon in Cloverdale, the Surrey RCMP will rededicate a plaque me-morializing a fallen offi -cer who lost his life here in 1974.

Th e Cst. Roger PierletOverhead is dedicated in memory of a Surrey RCMP member who was shot and killed on 176 Street just south of Highway 10, nearly the same location as the present day overpass that carries his name.

Twenty members in red serge will be in at-tendance during a short ceremony, along with Surrey RCMP Chief Supt. Fraser MacRae, and the division pastor, Jim Turner.

Staff Sgt. Major Dave Woods said the original bronze plaque had to be replaced.

On March 29, 1974, two men armed with a rifl e hurled a beer bottle through the police offi ce window as they drove through Cloverdale.

Cst. Pierlet stopped the men on 176 Street about 400 metres south of Highway 10. Aft er asking the driver to pro-duce his license, the pas-senger pulled the trig-ger, hitting the offi cer in the chest. Pierlet died almost immediately.

Th e two suspects, John Harvey Miller, then 28, and Vincent Cockriell, 18, were caught aft er a chase that led police to 264 Street and Highway 1, where the vehicle ran off the road.

Th ey were sentenced to death, and then to life imprisonment aft er the death penalty was

eliminated.Pierlet, born in

Gander, Newfound-land, was about to be married at the time of his murder. His family from Eastern Canada was already en route

to attend his wedding, only to learn of their son’s death when the commanding offi cer of the Surrey detachment met them at the airport.

He’s buried at Regina’s RCMP cemetery.

– The rededication is 12:30 p.m. May 21 at the north-east corner of the Pierlet

VICTORIA – By now you’ve probably seen part of the B.C. government’s “stick man” ad campaign to raise awareness of the harmonized sales tax.

Stick men, or rather stick persons, sort out confl icting claims about the tax by going to the B.C. government’s web-site to get an accurate summa-ry of what is and isn’t costing them more.

Later versions will no doubt feature stick persons checking their mail for brochures off ering arguments for and against the HST, and of course, those all-important mail-in ballots that will arrive in June.

Th is is an urgent pre-requisite to an in-formed vote. Anyone who listens in to a telephone town hall or phone-in show, or gets reader feedback such as I receive, knows that the basic facts are still widely misunder-stood.

So what does the NDP opposition focus on? Th e ads cost $5 million, grumbles NDP fi nance critic Bruce Ralston. Add that to town halls and mailers and the referendum fund-ing boils down to $7 million for pro-HST and a mere $250,000 for the FightHST eff ort.

Th is is a classic “straw man” argument, where one sets up a false premise and then knocks it down. Th e ads do not advocate, they merely inform.

Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson propped up

the NDP’s oldest scarecrow, that big “Liberal donor corporations” are the main benefi ciaries of the HST. Th is is a vital point for rural B.C., which depends on resource industries with huge machinery investments, and he has it exactly wrong.

In fact the entire ‘big business benefi ts most from HST’ narrative is false.

Vancouver tax lawyer David Rob-ertson points out that this is one of the “myths and misrepresentations”

propagated by Bill Vander Zalm, who has eff ectively set NDP tax policy since their limping retreat on the carbon tax.

In 24 pages, Robertson has written the clearest analysis I’ve seen so far, including a thorough demolition of Vander Zalm’s crude scare campaign known as FightHST, which has singled out banks and large resource companies.

Robertson notes that banks are actually worse off .

“…unlike most businesses, banks, fi nancial institutions and insurance companies cannot recover GST/HST they pay on expenses,” he writes. Th ey actually pay more under HST than they did under the old provincial sales tax (PST).

As for FightHST’s other specifi ed villains, “large corporations” and “large resource companies,” their machinery and produc-tion equipment were long ago exempted from sales tax. No change there.

“What the PST legislation did not containwere PST exemptions aimed specifi cally atsmall, independent businesses,” Robertsonwrites.

“So construction workers like welders, plumbers, electricians and other tradespersonshad to pay an additional seven per cent PSTon their work trucks, tools and equipment thatthey used to earn a living; retailers and cornerstore operators had to pay an additional sevenper cent on their shelving, refrigerators andcash registers; accountants and other profes-sionals had to pay PST on their offi ce furni-ture, computers and soft ware; truckers had topay an additional seven per cent PST on theirtruck tractors and trailers …” and so forth.

Th is is what the HST fi xes.Obviously, Big Labour doesn’t like all these

independent contractors. Th erefore the NDPmust also “fi ght” HST.

I’ve mentioned before that the NDP-VanderZalm axis of nonsense wants to deprive thepoor of a modest tax shift in their favour, paidfor by voluntary purchases of more affl uentconsumers.

I’ve talked about the trend towards self-employment and small business as the Ca-nadian economy adapts in a fast-changingworld. You may not like that trend, and youmay wish that everyone could have a unionjob with an employer-subsidized pension.

Th at’s not what is happening today.– Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, is taking notes.

In 2008, responding to pressure from animal rights activists, the Cloverdale Ro-deo switched to an invitation-only format. It was a diffi cult decision, because it meant losing status as a sanctioned rodeo.

Cloverdale Rodeo contestants don’t the earn points they need to compete on the seasonal rodeo circuit – but they do vie for one of the richest payouts in Canada.

It must feel like sweet vindication to in-vite the Canadian and world champs and have them RSVP four years running.

“We are very fortunate that they are very eager to come,” Smythe says, recalling the “extreme challenge” to change the rodeo’s format.

“We stepped up to the plate in coming up with an invitational format,” she says.

Th e format fi rmly in place, it’s gratifying to see much bigger wheels in the industry take notice.

When two Cloverdale Rodeo association reps – general manager Dave Melenchuk and administrator Jamie Rogers – went to the Houston rodeo in March, “How’s the format change?” was the question on ev-eryone’s lips.

Folks liked what they heard; Houston’s 20-day rodeo will conclude competition next year with a format modeled on Clo-verdale’s.

“Th ey’re following our format. Th at’s huge,” Smythe says. “It’s huge for the city of Surrey and for downtown Cloverdale.”

Smythe is also really excited about cel-ebrating the 65th anniversary of the Clo-verale Rodeo, founded in 1945 by the late Jack Shannon and Clarke Greenaway.

During the 65th Cloverdale Rodeo and 122nd Country Fair, that proud history

will be honored in a display at the newly-opened Cloverdale Recreation Centre next to the rodeo fairgrounds, alongside an ex-hibit recognizing the Surrey RCMP’s 60th anniversary.

Th e rec centre is also the location for the Surrey Arts Council’s Art Zone and the Kids Can Rodeo, a Surrey Food Bank fundraiser involving creative displays of cans from various community teams.

But she’s saved the biggest surprise for last. Working their connections with sena-tor Gerry St. Germain, the Cloverdale Ro-deo and Exhibition Association has lined up an armed forces salute for this year’s rodeo. A Canadian military fl ypast from CFB Comox will roar overhead Monday, May 23 at 2 p.m.

“Th ose kind of things, you work on them for a whole year, and fi nally you get the okay that they’re going to happen, and it makes it very rewarding,” Smythe says.

Th e rodeo draws up to 80,000 visitors to the fairgrounds each May long weekend, including 20,000 rodeo spectators.

“Over the past 65 years, I think they’ve faced everything that can happen,” says Melenchuk.

If hockey’s not your bag, there’s plenty of other diversions on hand. A thrilling roller derby exhibition, monster truck rides, a family movie night under the stars, and the West Coast Lum-berjack Show are just a few of the attractions in store.

Th ere’s also the Fraser Valley’s largest midway, the new Ex-treme Zone, new features in the Kidz Zone, free music and entertainment at the outdoor entertainment stage and more.

Small wonder Melenchuk describes the price of admission to the Country Fair as “It’s the best 12 bucks you can spend.”

Th is year’s free Sunday night concert is by Doug and the Slugs. Later, the Stetson Bowl hosts its fi rst-ever free family-friendly movie, How to Train Your Dragon, an animated con-temporary classic showing at dusk.

Check out the world famous Longhorn Saloon for great country music with long-time favourite Ken McCoy and Ap-paloosa, featuring a new vocalist, Langley’s Randi McMillan.

All that, and the world’s top cowboys and cowgirls in saddle bronc, bareback, bull riding and ladies’ barrel racing.

For the fi rst time this year, visitors will be able to buy tickets to rodeo performances and general country fair admission on-line at the Cloverdale Rodeo website.

Adding a roller derby exhibition came together quite by ac-cident – Melenchuk happened to be walking to his car aft er a board meeting when fate intervened.

“I was the late one out of here for the evening. And there were a couple of young ladies all decked out in roller derby equipment who had parked next to me.”

Turns out, the team practices at the Cloverdale Curling Club next door to rodeo headquarters.

“Th e bells went off in my head. Would you like to be part of rodeo?” he asked. “Oh my god, we’d LOVE to!” they replied.

Th e Cowgirls and Rollerskates derby takes place May 21-22 at the Cloverdale Curling Rink, in a section called the Extreme Zone, which features BMX bike and skateboard demos, mon-ster truck rides, and the West Coast Lumberjack Show – back aft er a hiatus.

“It was just so popular,” says Melenchuk. “It’s one of the

things that’s the roots of the country fair, and in B.C., loggingis part of our heritage.”

Rides on the Re-Max hot air balloon will be available by do-nation at Millennium Amphitheatre Park.

Last night, members of the B.C. Lions, the Felines cheersquad and rodeo stars were part of a kick off tailgate party atthe Agriplex, an aff air that replaced the opening night con-cert.

“Traditionally, they’ve tried to do a kick off concert, to vary-ing degrees of success. We’re going to do something a little bitdiff erent this year.” Th ere’s also lots to see and do in the historictown centre, which always revs up the rodeo spirit with eventslike the Cloverdale Rodeo Parade, Saturday, May 21 from 10a.m. to noon.

Th is year, check out more than 80 entries and 1,200 par-ticipants. Watch for vintage cars, horses, dancers, marchingbands, community groups and so much more.

If you need a lift to the fairgrounds, hop on a shuttle bus fora free ride to your destination throughout the weekend.

Roller derby to rock the rodeoBy Jennifer LangTh e action-packed, full-contact

sport of roller derby is a star at-traction at this year’s Cloverdale Rodeo.

B.C.’s only co-ed roller derby league, the Mainland Misfi ts, present Cowgirls and Rollerskates, a two-day derby May 21 and 22 at the Cloverdale Curling Club, the league’s home track.

Th e Mainland Misfi ts are made up of two women’s teams, the An-archy Angels and the Doomsday Bunnies, plus a men’s team called – tantalizingly – the Vancouver Murder.

“We really want to build up our following and our fan base, and we really want people in the com-munity to come out and join us,” says Fort Langley’s Tawnya Wood, co-captain of the Doomsday Bunnies.

Th e sport is growing so quickly, it’s gone viral, with 19 B.C. leagues and growing.

“People see it once and they want to come out and play, or they want to ref or they want to be non-skating offi cials,” says Wood.

“It’s full contact, and very com-petitive. Also, people have a lot of fun,” says Wood, who skates by the moniker Tee Kayo. Teammates’ names include Boo T Slamma, De-voida Taste and Backstabbing Bet-tie, to name a few, while league-mates the Anarchy Angels sport monikers like Mya Diction, Rolla Sassin and Mala Justid.

Roller derby is theatrical, even kitschy.

Th e colourful costumes are leg-endary, as are individual displays

like fi shnet stockings and face paint – but it’s also an athletic sport involving strength, agility and strategy.

It’s also family-friendly, as fans old and new will discover this weekend, when they’ll get their fi rst look at the Misfi ts during the Clo-verdale Rodeo Parade, followed by Cowgirls and Rollerskates, a four-bout derby Saturday and Sunday, in support of the charity Big Brothers of Greater Vancouver.

Amazing-ly, the men and ladies teams share the track during some

bouts, although Wood stress-es the teams themselves are not co-ed.

Th ere’s no shoulder check-ing during co-ed bouts, but hip checks are allowed, lead-ing to spills and wipe outs, and times when players even land

STEVEN WOOD PHOTOFull contact and very competitive: players wear roller skates, elbow and knee pads, mouth and wrist guards, and helmets.

on one another.“I’m not going to lie, when we were fi rst thinking of

merging, I wasn’t too sure,” she says. “It’s been so good for the sport. We’ve learned a lot from the men, and I think they’ve learned a lot from us.”

In fl at track derby, the track is fl at (in this case, pol-ished concrete), not banked. Players wear roller skates, elbow and knee pads, mouth and wrist guards, and helmets for protection.

Th e rules are simple. Two teams take part in a bout. Each 30-minute half

is broken into shift s called jams.Th e eight players at the front are called the pack

and act as blockers. Th e two jammers – one from each team – take off aft er the pack once the whistle blows, trying to make it through.

Once past the pack, the jammers sprint ahead tocatch up with the pack again. Jammers must completea second lap in order to score points by passing oppos-ing players, who, in turn, try to block their progress.

“Roller derby is an incredibly strategic game,” Woodsays.

It’s also one of the fastest-growing sports in NorthAmerica – and beyond. Th e players on Wood’s teamrun the gamut, from punk rockers to business execu-tives, artists and homemakers aged 21 to 50.

“Derby is a sport that embraces all shapes, all sizesand all athletic abilities. We are serious athletes – It isn’tabout wearing fi shnets. It isn’t about how you look.”

Th e players train hard, focus on their sport and notthe spectacle of roller derby, striving for empower-ment, athleticism and fun while being active in thecommunity.

Th e physical challenge of the sport, the theatricality, individuality, and the chance to blow off steam in anaccepting environment has huge appeal for women.

“We are strong women. A lot of us have children. You go out, have a two-hour practice and you get somehits. It’s a hard workout. Th ere’s nothing like this. Th enyou go home and you’re a great mom.”

Saturday, May 21, there’s a men’s all star invita-tional from 1-3 p.m., followed by Public Frenemy vs.Doomsday Bunnies from 4-6 p.m.

On Sunday, May 22, the Sea to Sky Sirens take onthe Anarchy Angels from 1-3 p.m., with a coed all-starinvitational closing out the derby from 4 to 6 p.m.

Free with fairgrounds admission ticket. Lookfor the Mainland Misfi ts at the Cloverdale CurlingClub – inside the Extreme Zone.

Th e Misfi ts also present One Lump or Two, an Al-ice in Wonderland ‘Mad Hatter’ themed derby, June4 at the Cloverdale Curling Rink, when they’ll hosttwo teams from Vancouver’s Terminal City Roller-girls.

Another bout is planned for July 16.

What’s that smell coming out of my dash vents? Offensive odors coming from air conditioning vents seems to be a common problem as we start to use our air conditioning more frequently or as the weather gets warmer. Odors are not a new problem but rather they have been around for as long as automobile air conditioning has been around. The origin of the smell is caused by fungus, bacteria and other microbes growing inside the air conditioning evaporator core - a moisture laden environment favorable for these pests to grow. You can tackle the “odor” problems either mechanically or chemically. Basic deodorizers are available that you can apply yourself as a short term solution to the problem. Each vehicle manufacturer offers factory approved techniques and specialty solutions to remedy the long term problem. Call for an air conditioning consultation if you have any concerns.

GRANT McMASTER, CGA

I operate a business from my home, what expenses can I deduct for my home office?

If you use part of your home for legitimate business purposes you can deduct a portion of your maintenance costs, utilities such as heat and electricity, property taxes, insurance, strata fees, rent, as well as the interest on the mortgage. In determining the portion of the expenses that you can claim as a deduction, you have to use a reasonable basis such as the area used for business purposes divided by the total area of your home. Please note that the Canada Revenue Agency usually applies a fairly strict standard in determining a reasonable deduction. You also may claim capital cost allowance (tax depreciation) on a portion on your home. However, I normally recommend against doing so as it will likely result in additional tax and complexity when you ultimately sell your home.

AQ I recently was told that poor posture can cause

headaches. Is this possible?

There are many causes of headaches however poor posture has been shown to be a contributing factor that can result in headaches. Consider a rounded stooped posture. The muscles of the chest are compressed and shortenened, the muscles in the upper back are lengthened and the muscles in the upper part of the neck are overactive and tight. This results in an imbalance of muscle tension and joint compression across the upper back and neck. Active muscle trigger points in the neck and upper back as well as poor alignment of the cervical and thoracic spine can cause headaches.

PHYSIOTHERAPY SELF HELP MEASURESPosture - sleep with your neck and back in the midline position.Sleep on a firm mattress and ensure that your neck is well supported.Computer - the computer screen should be directly in front ofyou. Check that your back is well supported and that you are notslouching forwards.Core Stability - Strengthen the stabilizing muscles of the neckand back. This will enable you to maintain good posture for longperiods of time.

A Physiotherapy assessment will help to identify the cause of injury and a comprehensive treatment program can help relieve the pain.

Should I have my home inspected before selling it?

An inspection helps ensure that there are fewer surprises in a real estate transaction, because everyone involved becomes more familiar with the property’s current condition. A professional home inspection provided by the seller can create an atmosphere of good faith. By making repairs and disclosing to the prospective buyer the property’s condition up front, before nego-tiations begin, you can create a more relaxed atmosphere by instilling confidence regarding the home’s condition. This, in turn, may help your house sell faster and closer to listing price. Contact the Lunders for more information.
