2014 Fresno State Women’s Lacrosse Notes

Freshman Impact The freshman Bulldog class has made an impact across the field in their first three collegiate games. Freshman attacker Allison Poust leads the class with four goals which ranks second on the team. In Fresno State’s season opener Poust scored three goals off the bench to lead the Bulldogs to an 8-6 victory over Monmouth on Feb. 16. Fellow freshman Brooke Filgo and Caroline Dineen-Carlson have recorded one goal apiece this season. Dineen-Carlson also recorded one assist at MU and leads the ’Dogs with eight draw controls. Freshman midfielder Kyleigh Westgarth has a team-high seven groundballs and notched an assist at Wagner.

Barnaba Records Career-High Saves Senior goalkeeper Lisa Barnaba helped Fresno State to a season open-

ing 8-6 win over Monmouth with eight huge saves for the Bulldogs on Feb. 16. At the core of the defense Barnaba had eight saves off of 19 shots. Three saves came in the second half where Barnaba only allowed two goals for MU. Barnaba then went on to record a career-high 16 saves against Wagner on Feb. 17. Her 16 saves ties for second in the Fresno State re-cord books for saves made in a single game.

Senior Leadership Across the Field Fresno State is led by three seniors in 2014- Kara Concheck, Ashley Philips and Lisa Barnaba look to lead the Bulldogs across the field in their last season. In 2013 Concheck had a team-high 22 goals and 28 points. While Concheck is the driving force behind the ’Dogs attacking unit, Barnaba and Philips look to lead the Bulldog defense this year. Last season Philips picked up 13 ground balls and forced nine turnovers while Barnaba had 34 saves in her 226 minutes in goal.

Junior Duo Ready for Round Three Marcy Levatino and Holly Cisneros return to the field as juniors after strong seasons in 2013. Levatino finished second on the team last season with 18 goals and 24 points, the junior attacker also added 17 groundballs and a team-high 30 draw controls. Cisneros looks to be a major contributor in the midfield this year after picking up a team-high 26 groundballs and 10 caused turnovers last season. Cisneros also added 25 draw controls in her 14 starts for the Bulldogs in 2013.

Newcomers After losing its largest senior class of 10, Fresno State welcomes 10 fresh faces to the roster this season. With the addition of two redshirts, there will be a total of 12 new Bulldogs joining the 11 returners across the field in 2014. Highlighting the freshmen class is two-time National All-American Caroline Dineen-Carlson. The freshman midfielder finished her senior year of high school with 58 goals, 28 assists, 86 points and 32 groundballs. Along with the other 11 freshman, Dineen-Carlson looks to add fresh talent and depth the Bulldogs roster this season.

2014 Fresno State Women’s Lacrosse Notes

The upcoming 2013-14 season marks Jessica Pausewang’s third year as the Fresno State head lacrosse coach. In her second season with the Bulldogs, Pausewang led the team to two nonconference victories, breaking several school records and earning many conference honors along the way.

During the 2013 season three Bulldogs earned MPSF weekly awards under Pausewang’s leadership. Marcy Levatino was named MPSF Offensive Player of the Week and Anjelica Fuccillo earned MPSF Rookie of the Week after the first week of play. Katie Wilbur went on to be named MPSF Defensive Play of the Week in the first week of March.

Under coach Pausewang the Bulldogs also broke several single-season records in 2013. The team recorded a season-best 147 points and 115 goals. The ‘Dogs also topped the Fresno State single-game points record with 23 against Presby-terian and the single-game save record with 18 at Denver.

At the conclusion of regular season play, Levatino was named to the 2013 Moun-tain Pacific Sports Federation All-MPSF Second-Team. Levatino was the second Fresno State lacrosse student-athlete to ever earn All-Conference honors.

In her first season, Pausewang helped the Bulldogs to their first win in the program’s four year existence. She lead the team to an overall 3-10 record , including the No. 1 upset of the year, beating UC Davis, 12-11 in double overtime for their first conference win in the MPSF.

Under Pausewangs tutelage, Briana Hetherington was named the MPSF Player of the Week after the Bulldogs first win in program history against Long Island 17-12. Hetherington was the first Bulldog ever to win this award.

Prior to joining the `Dogs in 2011, Pausewang spent four seasons as head coach at Oneonta State. Pausewang’s resume includes coaching two All-Region All-Americans and multiple SUNY all conference selections and coaching Rendcomb Junior College to a United Kingdom National Championship final.

SUNY Athletic Conference was familiar territory for Pausewang, as she graduated from SUNY Geneseo in 2006, where she played four years of lacrosse and three years of field hockey for the Blue Knights. As a goalie for the Blue Knights, she finished her career ranked second in career saves with 629, including a season-high 180 saves in 2004. She received multiple accolades and graduated as the most decorated goalie in Geneseo history.

Pausewang arrived in Oneonta in the spring of 2008 after living in England coaching and playing lacrosse.

In England, Pausewang coached lacrosse for two years at Rendcomb College. She also coached the Develop-mental team, University College of London, and other various schools with the English Lacrosse Association. She played and coached for the Hitchin Lacrosse Club in England from 2006 to 2007 and also played and coached for the Cheltenham Lacrosse Club in England before returning to the United States.

Pausewang was also the former head coach for four years for the Finland Women’s National team.

A Long Island, NY native, Pausewang is a Level II certified international lacrosse and field hockey coach. She is also an international qualified lacrosse referee.

Pausewang graduated with a dual degree in communicative disorders & sciences from Geneseo.
