Be Wise- Get Advised!

One of the most important steps a student can take as they begin their college education is to get advised. Students will learn what classes to take and how to get started on their pathway to success.

Students in the Freshman Focus program will have an opportunity to work with an academic advisor to assist them with planning their academic journey!

• Advising offers students an opportunity to: • Discuss academic and career goals• Select their academic major and courses • Receive accurate, up-to-date information about HCC academics, policies, procedures, and processes• Develop a short-term plan for each semester • Plan for graduation and transfer• Explore the variety of enriching experiences HCC has to offer like study abroad, service learning, and

internships

Academic Advising

Our Transfer Center has available resources for exploring admissions requirements and programs available at colleges and universities in Maryland and the U.S.

• ARTSYS – https://artsys.usmd.edu/• Online transfer tool for the University of Maryland system and Maryland private schools

• Transfer Library• Transfer Institution Visits• Spring and Fall semester Transfer Fairs• Transfer Information Session

At HCC, we prepare students to transfer to a four-year college or university to earn their bachelor's degrees. We work with public and private universities in Maryland and across the country. No matter where you want to go, our academic advisors can help you get there from here.

No matter where you want to go, get there from here!

• The DSS office assists students with documented disabilities so that they are afforded equal access to college programming and courses. They provide ongoing support to students throughout their entire time at HCC. Ways they assist include:

• The provision of reasonable accommodations• Support and encouragement• Advocacy and fostering of self-advocacy• Proactive academic advising

• DSS serves over 700 students each semester with varying needs and strengths.• Professors at HCC are therefore quite accustomed to providing accommodations to students and to

supporting students with differing needs and learning styles.

• It doesn't have to be over!• Student who have had academic accommodations, IEPs, or 504 Plans in high-school can have

reasonable accommodations in college. However, the supports or the delivery of these supports may differ in college.

What We Do:

Disability Support Services (DSS)

Students with disabilities need to self-identify in college, meaning they need to let our office or someone at HCC know that they have a disability and/or would like accommodations in college. Personnel at the college cannot ask students if they have disabilities. The college does not automatically know if a student had an IEP or 504 Plan in high school.

Students then schedule an intake with a DSS counselor where we discuss things like past academic experiences, history of accommodations and supports, academic and personal strengths, disability-related needs and difficulties.

DSS does require documentation of disability that a DSS counselor will review as part of the intake process. This documentation may take the form of an IEP, 504 Plan, psychoeducational testing, assessments or letters from relevant healthcare providers, or several of these documents.Students/parents should gather all relevant documents from the public-school system before graduating from high school.

Both information learned during intake meetings and documentation will be used to determine reasonable accommodations for students. The accommodations process is an interactive one, and accommodations are tailored carefully for every student.

• DSS may then also act as an academic advisor, assisting students in setting up placement testing (if needed) and in registering and selecting classes. Students can also choose to do this with a Freshman Focus Academic Advisor.

• Once a student has registered, DSS then works with students to put together a memo that they will give their instructors, letting them know of their eligibility for specific reasonable accommodations.

• DSS respects confidentiality and privacy. Documentation of disability is kept securely within the DSS office and is not part of a student's general academic file. A student's use of accommodations will never be indicated on the academic transcript.

• DSS is happy to meet with Freshman Focus students planning to enroll at HCC for Fall 2020 anytime from now on. Meetings can be held virtually using the Zoom meeting platform during this unusual time of public health concern.

FERPA: Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act• Protects the privacy of student education records by requiring that personally identifiable

information only be released to parties with a legitimate educational interest. Personally identifiable information includes but is not limited to student ID number, class schedule, grades, financial information, class participation. This means that unless they have written permission, a parent cannot contact RRVA asking about grades (even if they pay tuition!).

• FERPA takes effect once a student is enrolled in classes at HCC. If a student would like a parent or other family member to have access to their record, a FERPA release form is in order. FERPA release forms must be filled out in the RRVA office in-person by the student (photo ID is required). Contact [email protected] for FERPA-related questions.
