WHAT IS A MYTH?

• Some people use the word myth to mean fake, but…• Mythology is the study of stories that were used to explain the

world and other human experiences.

GREEK MYTHS

Were used to explain the creation of the earth, death and the afterlife, and human experiences: love, jealousy,

revenge, & war.They were also used as entertainment and were

only told orally because most people could not read.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE GOD OR GODDESS?

• Greek Myths include gods & goddesses.

• A god or goddess is immortal. This means that they can never die and that they live forever.

• The immortals could not die but they did make mistakes and had human emotions such as: jealousy, love & anger.

MYTHS ALSO INCLUDE MORTALS

• Mortals are men and women who live on earth. To be mortal means that you can die.

• Sometimes the gods like to help, punish or even have romantic relationships with the mortals.

• Uranus was a terrible father – hated Hecatoncheires – banished them in depth of the earth

• Gaea made a knife for Cronus (youngest Titan) – Cronus castrated his father with the knife – threw his genitals into the ocean

• Unclear what happened to Uranus after that

• From blood spilled on earth emerged giants, tree nymphs and Erinnyes

• Genitals in ocean formed sea foam

• From foam came Aphrodite

• Rhea was a titan• Married her brother• Prophesy – Cronus

would be overthrown by a son

• Cronus swallowed a rock not Zeus• Zeus raised by nymphs in the forest• As he was older he was allowed back in the court• Rhea made a drink that made Cronus vomit up the

other five children• Zeus was made leader of the gods• War began between the Titans and the Olympians• With the help of the freed Hecatoncheires, Cyclopes,

and three titans Zeus and the Olympians were victorious
