Press Release For immediate use 9 October 2008 Fresh Out of the Box: Interventions in the Garman Ryan Collection 14 October 2008 – 14 October 2009 The New Art Gallery Walsall The New Art Gallery Walsall contains two permanent collections of art. The Garman Ryan Collection was given to Walsall in 1972 by Lady Kathleen Epstein and is on display in the gallery in a series of themed rooms. The Permanent Collection is kept mostly in storage and was started by Walsall Council in 1892 as part of their vision to give the town access to culture. This collection continues to develop today. This exhibition, Fresh Out of the Box, presents the first chance to see new art works acquired by The New Art Gallery Walsall. Displayed within the Garman Ryan Collection, the contemporary works give a new twist to the thematic display. Their presence enables us to make sometimes surprising connections between past and current artistic interests. Jo Digger, Collections Curator at The New Art Gallery Walsall says “Fresh Out of Box showcases a wide selection of works from our permanent collection enabling visitors to see a range of contemporary works within the context of the Garman Ryan collection thematic display. These ‘interventions’ enliven the Garman Ryan Collection and by casting a different light on existing works and by making links with old and new ideas and preoccupations”. There are 23 exhibits displayed on two floors and a free exhibition guide. Free Garman Ryan Collection talks take place every Wednesday and Saturday at 1pm. Admission to the gallery is free.
