FRESH DJ workshops are held at our state of the art Stu-dio on Saint-Ambroise, near the trendy Atwater Market. The facility was designed to accommodate up to eight students at a time, who are taught from a custom made curriculum designed specifically as an educational tool for learning the skills necessary to DJ as a hobby or profession. In addition, students will also have the opportunity to better familiarize themselves with various elements of the special events in-dustry.

“Music makes the people come together!” - Madonna

Entertainment is viewed as the most crucial element of an event. It’s what differentiates the good ones, from the… not so good ones! FRESH en-tertainment has built its reputation off hiring and training the most tal-ented performers in the city. This allows us to offer an exclusive roster of versatile Dancers, MC’s, Animators, Specialty Acts, Musicians, and most notably Disc Jockeys! With that in mind, we’ve decided to create custom-ized workshops in order to help develop new talent through education, advertisement, innovation, and skill.

Make no mistake, learning how to DJ on your own is by no means af-fordable. In fact, it’s an expensive investment before you can even get a real feel for it. Additionally, with so many makes and brands available, doing the extensive research in order to determine the right equipment to purchase can be extremely time consuming. Not to mention, figuring out what all those buttons and knobs actually do! All in all, if you’re just start-ing out, learning how to DJ can be quite challenging.

OUR CONCEPT

With the FRESH DJ Workshop, aspiring DJ’s will be taught the meaning of all the techni-cal terms used in the DJ world, such as ‘cue scratching’, ‘beat-counting’, ‘mashups’, and more! This 5-class program will run for 90 minutes each and is geared to youths (ages 12 to 18) who have an interest in an extra curricular program that is not only education-al, but super fun! This program is extremely hands on and covers a variety of useful sub-jects, including ‘history of music’, ‘produc-tion’, ‘troubleshooting’, ‘animation’, etc… allowing young individuals to realize their full potential.

Many aspiring DJ’s have worked their way up the ladder into mainstream music and have found themselves on tour with some of the hottest acts in show business.

With education and experience that combine marketing and entertain-ment, meet the team behind the concept:

THE CURRICULUM

Each class runs on a custom curriculum, carefully crafted by professionals in the field. Each class works in conjunction with the individual strengths of our expert instructors. It includes music theory and terminologies that are used throughout the learning experience. The course is essentially designed to give students the basic DJ tools they need to get started in the busi-ness. Classes will be led by Montreal’s premiere Club DJ, Jake Sutherland (DJ-AKE), and features some of FRESH entertain-ment’s most recognizable personalities. Classes will be a combi-nation of lecture and practice in a studio setting that features 2 complete workstations.

Our Beginners course is broken up into two semesters, Beginner 1 and 2. The course is designed for students to make an easy transition to the next level:

1. DIGITAL DJ

The Digital DJ seminar is one of our most popular and most asked about topics. This class touches on the following:

• Evolution of the Digital DJ & the various types of mp3 software• Hardware set-up (how the interface interacts with computers, turn tables and/or CD decks) • Software (how to set-up for DJing, cue points, loops and utilizing short keys)• Recording (how to record club sets using various third party software and soundcards)• Maintenance (formatting internal/external hard drives, while operating at peak performance)• Troubleshooting

Using Serato Scratch LIVE as the guideline, students will learn and ex-perience the basics of this reliable software. The Digital DJ seminar will also give new DJs an idea of other helpful ‘DJ tools’ that are available for download. Surprise guests stop by to lend their help to those eager on mastering the art of DJ’ing!

2.MARKETING, SPECIAL EVENTS INDUSTRY

This portion of the workshop focuses more on the key elements per-taining to the special events industry as a whole.

Mike Goldfarb, founder and president of FRESH entertainment, stops by to deliver a short lecture on how to take your skills and turn it into a profitable business.

3.INTERACTIVE ENTERTAINMENT/ANIMATION

While a DJ is often viewed as the “background” personality on an event, it’s still important for them to develop synergy with the “front end” enter-tainment. In this section we focus on teamwork, and explain how good entertainers rely on each others skills to pull off a successful event. In-structors will also demonstrate how to properly engage a crowd through various animation tactics.

So get your energy tracks ready, as some famous personalities from our exclusive dance roster will be dropping in to work with the students in creating some ‘FRESH’ performances.

4. DJ EQUIPMENT / MUSIC THEORY

Students will have the ability to learn all types of DJ equipment, including table top CD Players, Vinyl and special effect programs. It is also during this course that students will learn more advanced skills and tricks nec-essary to create cool “mashups”. In addition, they will continue to learn mixing and scratching techniques, while also be learning the intricacies of programming an evening of music through song selection, song structure, music history, music knowledge quiz, etc…

5.THE FINAL CLASS

School’s out and now it’s finally time to show off your skills! This special two hour class is designed to allow each student to record their very own Megamix (which they’ll be able to take home with them on CD)! Students will also have the opportunity to engage in a friendly DJ battle, where each of them will be asked to demonstrate at least one skill that they’ve picked up over the entire semester. Our panel of judges will decide who will walk away with an exclusive prize pack, courtesy of FRESH entertainment and its generous sponsors!

Upon completion of the course, each student will receive an official certifi-cate recognizing their abilities as a professional DJ.

6.THE SHOWCASE

FRESH entertainment is highly recognized for two things: 1) pro-ducing a wide range of successful events, and 2) recruiting and developing some of the most sought after talent in Canada. So when it comes to finding new talent, what better place to look than in your own backyard! At the end of each semester, our team of talent recruiters will choose from a select group of students in order to provide them with the incredible opportunity of showcasing their talent at one of our upcoming events!
