We at TWICB have been having a great time recently making several trips to iconic taprooms in London and elsewhere. It’s fantastic to be back drinking inside venues again, though outside is even more perfect when the sun is shining. Cheers to all of you who we have met on our beer travels so far, and to all the staff busy brewing and pouring amazing Craft Beer.

Though things in the UK are improving, the shock announcements about travel last week are a reminder that nothing in this Covid world of ours is certain. We are disappointed that the start our Grand Beer Tours is de-layed until later this year. However, once our destinations are officially on the ‘green list’ and set to stay there, we’re going full speed ahead. Don’t forget to keep checking the promotional pages in our Newsletters for details, and hopefully we’ll see you on one of our awesome trips.

LATEST UK CRAFT BEER RELEASES 31st May – 6th JUNE 2021

Odyssey Brew Co. Cocoa

10% Imperial Stout Cocoa is much sweeter than its twin Imperial Stout, 'Crema', released last week, purely

from the addition of pure liquid cacao. Toasty bread, coconut and distinct milk chocolate. Thick and indulgent.

Odyssey Brew Co. Street Struck

6% IPA Citra, Cryo Amarillo, Cryo Ekuanot and Cryo Columbus. The aroma is bright, intense

mango and grapefruit with apricot there as well. Let's say an East Coast brew with a West Coast soul. The bitterness really gets the hops popping, with more grapefruit and

citrus than you can shake a stick at.

Brick Brewery

Prickly Pear & Lime Gose 3.9% Gose A zesty modern Gose, fermented with Kveik yeast and their house Lacto before

conditioning on Lime zest and Prickly Pear juice.

Overtone Brewing Co.

Hefeweizen

5.2% Hefeweizen Smooth, sweet and fruity with overtones of banana and clove. The Kazbek hops bring a nuanced spice and earthiness into the classic hefeweizen.

Overtone Brewing Co. Magic People, Yuzu People

5% Berliner Weisse An easy drinking sessionable summer Berliner Weisse brewed with a nice amount of

fresh strawberries and yuzu. Light and refreshing with the perfect balance of sweet, citrus and tart flavours.

Howling Hops

Biffed The Landing 5.6% DDH Pale A DDH Pale Ale with Pils malt base and stacked with Idaho 7 and Citra hops.

Two Tribes Brew Co.

Go Big

7.4% Baltic Porter With an inviting flavour profile of chocolate syrup, molasses, liquorice, and caramel

backed up with a hint of roasted coffee and blackberry. The aroma is full of treacle, Belgian chocolate, plums, sultanas and roasted barley.

3

Attic Brew Co. Paradise Forum

5.5% Pale Ale Flavours of jelly babies, ripe mango and orange segments. A lighter body though, makes

it super drinkable and keeps it from being cloying.

Burning Soul Brewing

Pushing Up The Moon 7.2% IPA A big juicy combination of Idaho 7, Citra and Amarillo hops. Made to be highly quaffable.

Turning Point Brew Co.

Drones In The City 4% Bitter A classic bitter made with Maris Otter and Crystal malts, English hops East Kent Goldings and Archer. Sweet, nutty, and properly bitter. A pint of bitter... just the job.

The London Beer Factory

Dawn (Blend #3)

7.2% Blonde Wild Ale A herbal elderflower nose with a hint of oak and ripe stone fruit. The flavour is big on

ripe stone fruit with a hint of bitterness in the background, which transitions into green peppercorn and a light tangerine citrus before finishing crisp and dry.

The London Beer Factory

Dusk (Blend #3) 6.3% Dark Wild Ale A malt driven aroma intermingles with almond and hazelnut and fades into a fruit sweetness akin to raisins. The flavour starts off on the fore pallet with a rich hazelnut

and sherry combination, followed by a good hit of chocolate and lightly roasted coffee before finishing with hints of tart red apple and cola.

Polly’s Brew Co.

Circle Foam

8% DIPA A beer that is bursting with passionfruit, peach, and apricot notes, backed up with

mango and pink grapefruit, before finishing off with a grassy bitterness to keep everything balanced.

Polly’s Brew Co.

New Tropical Reflex

7.2% Black IPA Sabro heavy dry-hop bill brings coconut, tropical notes which play off roasted

chocolate notes from the malt bill. Backed up with smaller additions of Talus and Citra

for some extra levels of complexity, the result is a full-on tropical explosion of flavour

presented in a dark beer.

Polly’s Brew Co.

Sonar Bamboo

6.8% IPA Expect to find a fruit salad of huge mango and papaya notes from Simcoe, with clean

pineapple and passionfruit brought to the table by Vic Secret, before rounding out with grapefruit bitterness from Citra.

6.5% IPA A grist made up of Extra Pale Malt, Jumbo Oats and Wheat, and dry hopped with Strata

Left Handed Giant Brewing Co.

Blender

6% Sour IPA Contains blackcurrant and blackberry purees, Madagascan vanilla and honey. Expect

mouth-wateringly tart, juicy hedgerow berries with a sherbety fizz and a silky sweetness.

BREWERS CORNER

The superb Boak and Bailey have a well balanced piece look-ing at what we learn from the stories of sexual harassment and bullying which have gripped the Craft Beer Industry for the past few weeks

https://boakandbailey.com/2021/05/what-needs-to-change-and-what-can-consumers-do/

Please read this, as all of us have a part to play in making this industry a better place.

Jeff Alworth has a well-reasoned article which responds to a rather sensationalist article from The Atlantic this week (also linked below)

https://www.beervanablog.com/beervana/2021/6/2/do-americans-drink-too-much

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2021/07/ameri-ca-drinking-alone-problem/619017/

As is usually the case, we agree with Jeff.

The Brewers Journal has an interesting piece looking at our friends at Brook House Hops, and how high-tech soil analysis is contributing the to the superb quality of their Herefordshire hops.

https://www.brewersjournal.info/putting-in-the-groundwork-hops/

Finally, dragon-fruit puree, anyone?

https://newschoolbeer.com/home/2021/6/oregon-fruit-drag-on-fruit-puree

If it tastes as good as it looks, this could be the next big thing to feed all of our fruited-sour habits.

taproom reviewThe Experiment, Unit 19, Bohemia Place, London E8 1DU

The Experiment opened in 2018 as a joint venture between two of the most celebrated names in UK Craft Beer, Verdant Brewing Co. from Falmouth, Cornwall and Pressure Drop Brewing Co. from London.

Open on Wednesdays through to Sundays, the Experiment is close to Hackney Central Over-ground Station and situated in a railway arch. As there are several other Craft Beer and hospitality business in adjacent arches, the area is becom-ing a popular leisure destination for those in the know. The Taproom has eight tables inside with several more outside, and serves 10 draft beers, typically 5 each from the two breweries.

They don’t appear to serve food other than crisps and snacks, but with multiple food vendors along the row of arches there is plenty of nearby choice if you are hungry and want another dimension to your experience.

17

As the Craft Beer Industry, as a whole, often works in collaboration, we find it interesting that more UK breweries have not yet followed the lead set by Verdant and Pressure Drop, by setting up joint taprooms. However, if you listen to This Week in Craft Beer - The Pod-cast this week, you’ll hear about another one, planned to open in the Greater Manches-ter area later this year.

PATREON ANNOUNCEMENT Discover the benefits of membership

When we launched This Week in Craft Beer in January 2020, we were blissfully

unaware of what lay ahead of us! Considering the obstacles, we have all faced, we

are proud of what we managed to accomplish in our first year.

However, we have lots more that we want to do in 2021! In order to fund these

activities and to enable our Community to get more involved with the creative process at TWICB, we have launched a Patreon Membership Programme.

Full details of how you can get involved starting at less than the cost of a half-decent can of beer per

month, can be found at patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer.

Don't worry, our weekly Newsletter and Podcast will continue to be FREE FOR EVERYONE! The Patreon

Membership offers access to range of brand new TWICB Products and Services. Please check it out and

let us know what you think?!

www.thisweekincraft.beer/patreon

Q. Why are you starting to charge for things that we have enjoyed for free all this year? A. We aren't! The weekly Newsletter and weekly Brewer-interview Podcast will continue to be free to everyone. Patreon will

enable us to offer brand-new additional products and services to Members.

Q. What's this about Members getting involved with TWICB? A. We have been amazed and delighted with the amount of engagement and feedback we have received during our first year, via

social media, email etc. The UK Craft Beer Community is clearly engaged, knowledgeable and sociable! We want to provide a mechanism for bringing the community into our creative process, allowing people to participate in the planning, research,

production and delivery of our products.

Q. Why do you have to charge for things? A. TWICB is run by just two people: Rob and Steve. Whilst it is undoubtedly a labour of love, it has developed into something that

consumes a significant part of our working weeks. Steve works mainly on the Newsletter, where the New Beers Section alone

takes many hours per week, to research, collate and format. Rob works mainly on the podcast, where each episode takes several

hours to schedule, research, record, edit and promote. Whilst we will continue to invest this time to produce the free products, we think Patreon could be a great way of funding the time and effort that we want to devote to developing new products and

services.

Q. Apart from your time, what specifically will the Patreon proceeds be used to fund? A. As soon as the COVID-19 situation permits, we want to take the podcast on the road, to record Brewer interviews at their own

Taprooms, as well as record live segments at Festivals, Tap-Takeovers and other beery events of note. In order to provide a quality

finished audio product, we will need to invest in some decent mobile recording equipment, not to mention the cost of travelling

the length and breadth of Britain in the pursuit of great interviews!

Q. What is the thought process behind the bundles of Patreon Membership bonuses that you are offering? A. We have tried to come up with bundles that combine some community benefits, exclusive digital products, exclusive physical

products, invites to exclusive TWICB events, discounts on TWICB Grand Tours and opportunities to participate in the TWICB

creative process. We have tried to price each Membership Level so that each offers outstanding value for money. We have also

tried to be mindful of the number of Patreon members that we can realistically include in each bonus activity. (Clearly the invite to

participate in the podcast interview or attend the TWICB "Board Meeting" needs to be strictly limited in numbers, or else the bonus

would cease to be "exclusive” and would risk disrupting the actual process itself.)

Q. Are the Membership Benefits and Levels set in stone? A. Of course not! We are literally making this up as we go along currently! We would love to get your feedback on the Levels, the

Benefits, and indeed the very idea of using Patreon in the first place! Please hit us up on IG (@thisweekincraft.beer) or via email [email protected]. We confidently expect to need to adjust the Patreon model as we go along, based on feedback.

Q. Is this like a Gym membership, where I sign up in January, and then regret it for the rest of the year?!

A. Definitely Not! Membership is month-to-month and you can cancel your membership at any time. Only caveat here is that

certain Member Benefits (mainly those ones that involve a significant cost for us to provide to you) are only unlocked after three

or six months at a certain tier.
