Genders (masculine and feminine words)

In French, all nouns are either masculine or feminine. This is called the gender of a name.

Before a masculine word, use “un” for “a”.

E.g.: un crayon.

Before a feminine word, use “une” for “a”.

E.g.: une chaise.

Nouns in English don’t have genders, but in French they do. It is important to learn the

gender of each noun as you meet it.

Examples:

A dog (m.) : un chien

A book (m): un livre

A copy book (m.): un cahier

A rubber (f.): une gomme

A boy (m.): un garçon

A girl (f.): une fille

The Plural form

How do we usually make nouns plural in English?

Can we usually hear the added letter?

To make nouns plural in French, we also add -s, but usually it is not pronounced.

Exemples: un crayon , deux crayons

une gommes , deux gommes

Exceptions:

des chips (crisps) a few words have irregular plural forms.

Exemples: un animal, des animaux.

un cheval, des chevaux.
