GeographyFrench Guiana is on the

northern coast of South America.

It is between Suriname and Brazil

about the same size as Indiana.

It is close to the equator which contributes to the hot and humid climate

The Creole population comprises the largest ethnic group and has had the greatest influence on the country's culture.

France funds this country which makes it the wealthiest region in Northern South America

Architecture

Houses range greatly in size and uniqueness, but the relative prosperity that results from living under the French flag allows the houses to be built of decent quality, and almost all have running water and electricity.

They are usually painted light colors such as blue and yellow in keeping with the Caribbean Creole style

Devils IslandThis prison was mainly used for French prisonersThey were forced to pour salt water on weeds that

sprung up-hence the boredomPrisoners tried to escape, and eventually a revolt

took place, the prisoners lost, their bodies were thrown to the sharks

A movie was made on this prison called Papillon.Except for those confined to solitary for

infractions, prisoners were allowed to come and go during the day, before being locked up and chained up at night.

FoodsThe diversity of cultures has

given the local foods their flavor. Caribbean and Creole style

foods are common along with Vietnamese and Chinese foods. Seafood, especially shrimp, is eaten with rice as a side dish.

The Cayenne Pepper is a fine ground powder made from the seeds and pods of various types of chili.
