Peace Lutheran Church FREMONT, INDIANA July Newsletter, 2014 Set Free! Professor MacDonald, a professor of a university in Glasgow, Scotland, and a Scottish chaplain were captured by the Germans in World War II. For some reason, MacDonald was put into the American compound, while the Scottish chaplain was put in the British compound. A high wire fence separated the two compounds. Unknown to the German guards, the Americans had constructed a little home-made radio by which they were able to get news from the outside. Every day, MacDonald would listen to the news on the radio, then go to the fence and share it with the chaplain in the ancient Gaelic language, which none of the Germans could under-stand. One day, news came over the little radio that the German high command had surrendered to the Allies and that the war was over. MacDonald took the news to his friend – and then watched him disappear into the barracks. A moment later, a roar of celebration resounded from the barracks. Life in that camp was transformed. The prisoners walked around, singing and shouting joyfully. They waved at the guards and even laughed at the guard dogs. Three nights later – when the German guards finally heard the news, the guards fled in the dark, leaving the gates unlocked. The next morning, the British and American POW’s walked out as free men, but they were truly set free three days earlier by the news that the war was over. We are told in Hebrews 2:14-15, “Since the children have flesh and blood, He, too, shared in their humanity so that by His death, He might destroy him who holds the power of death – that is, the devil – and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” The Christian is already free from the power of death and the fear of death – and therefore is free to serve the Lord Jesus Christ – without any fear of what Satan might do. The devil is a defeated enemy – and death is an empty threat for the one who is in Christ. And even though we aren’t in heaven yet, we know the outcome of the war. So let’s continue to celebrate each day at home – and each week together at church – the victory is ours and NOTHING can ever take that fact away from us.

Thank you, friends of Peace! The summer of 2014 has already been a whirlwind...or maybe I

should say...a tumbleweed. My 40-day wandering in the Texas wilderness

was challenging, educational, encouraging, enlightening and profitable.

Here are some aspects of each: Challenging: ◊ I missed Michelle, Zeke, JJ, Noah, Seth, Bella, and Mae each and every day! ◊ The often approx. 16-hour work days became quite exhausting... Educational ◊ I was able to receive many neat ideas on how to approach youth and young adult ministry after

participating in a 3-day Millennial Conference. ◊ I learned much of the challenges our Military and Chaplains are facing due to new regulations. Encouraging ◊ I was excited to see the valuable Christian Military Ministries that are still thriving despite the

hostilities to conservative Christianity within our contemporary context. Enlightening: ◊ I learned much of how the conservative members of the Chaplain Corps are Biblically handling

the challenges of pluralism and the consequences of the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT). Profitable: ◊ I received 2 boxes of supplies from a VBS we conducted at JBSA—Randolph that we can use

for VBX at Peace. ◊ I was able to preach, lead liturgy and teach Bible study for the Traditional Service and help lead

the Contemporary Service with musical worship each weekend. And so with that brief synopsis, I thank you for allowing me to participate and be a missionary to the military as part of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod’s World Missions. Please continue to pray for our Military Chaplains as they are on the “front lines” of the spiritual battle that is occurring.

Sunday, July 13 — Commissioned at 10:30 a.m.; Leave approx. 12:30 p.m. Monday, July 14 — St. Louis Seminary & Zoo; Arrive in Oswego, KS Tuesday, July 15 — Friday July 18 — Evangelism/Community Service Sat. July 19 — White-Water Rafting/R&R Sun. July 20 — Worship (2 Churches); Depart for Meramac Mon. July 21 — Cavern Tour; Arrive back in Fremont approx. 8:00 p.m.
