Artistic expression - a performance which is an artistically complete piece
Harmony between horse and rider
As per the principles of dressage sport outlined by FEI
Use of music to enhance the performance
Entertaining-–
Rhythm, energy and elasticity
Harmony
Choreography
Degree of difficulty
Choice of music
The 5 artistic marks are more or less dependent on the quality of the technical execution, but the first two in particular
Clearly insufficient test technically cannot have high artistic marks.
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN TECHNICAL
MARKS AND ARTISTIC MARKS
A combination of the first 2 collective marks - Paces and Impulsion
Dependent on quality of technical execution with emphasis on the regularity of rhythm.
Must reflection the quality of execution of technical requirements
Combination of third and fourth collective marks
Main emphasis on harmony and way of going
less on the seat of the rider.
Use of the arena space Inventiveness – not just the lines
from the test How test is joined together –
distinct sequences of movements Choice of key figures, how they
are placed Virtuoso pieces well placed Overall effects and patterns - left
and right balance Not over weighting one
movement eg: too much passage
Start notionally at 7 for original floor plan and work up or down from there.
There is a chance to reward a little more here, if original, but keep the relationship with technical work
This is a true artistic mark, but elaborate choreography will never make up for poor execution.
The assessment in the degree of difficulty is closely connected with the quality of the technical performance
Rider must assess the risk and security of execution. If harmony is lost, marks must go down - often 6 or below
No limit now to one -handed riding
Minimum requirements only of base level 6.0
or
Badly chosen and poorly executed 6 or below
When there is a rise in the degree of difficulty according to the level of standard tests, minimum of 7.0
More difficult movements, well chosen and well executed, 7+
Styles of music
Does is suit the horse?
Does it match the paces?
Does it support the choreography?
Does it tell a story / have a
single theme?
Is it well put together?

If the music matches all paces, and the changes of music are in time with the transitions, you are thinking of a mark of 7 For higher marks (7+) the music must: Suit the type of horse Have good entry music to set the scene Have a clear beginning and an end Phrasing must clearly support and enhance the
choreography eg: in half passes, leg yields Tell a story, with different music for each pace Similar style or theme of music throughout Demonstrate light and shade (loud and soft) Have highlights to accent extended paces, pirouettes etc Enable the rider to ride in time - not be ahead or behind the
music
If the horse is disobedient, or there are mistakes in execution, this will have a negative impact on the scoring as the interpretation of the music is disturbed.
Under no circumstances can a judge follow his personal taste but should be able to justify mark based on the criteria.
Vocals can be used to enhance the overall performance – humour , connection to story or title of freestyle etc. Never used throughout.
Background music which does not match the paces or support choreography is not acceptable.
Could be a 5!
Can use half marks for technical and artistic Need to record each time a movement is executed
in the left hand of the sheet Average these marks for the final mark for each
movement. Enter in the next column Helpful hints: Record your artistic marks as a monitor for correct
ranking Notate when a difficult movement occurs and also
notate whether well performed or poorly performed!
