MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Happy summer fellow Freemasonites, I hope you are enjoying this “warm” weather. We again participated in Harbor Fest with the Story boards depicting Norfolk and Freemason in 1907. I appreciated the strong backs (Greta Gustafson) that helped put them up. Legal issues are still going on with the City over their razing the Granby House on Freemason. What a shame. Walkway around the Battleship should be open by the time you read this. Lots more deterioration of the stringers holding it up than they originally thought. New handrail and lighting is still in the works. The next big project is replacing the bad pilings in Freemason Harbor so we can again host the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race in Norfolk. As you have all noted we are inundated with Lime Scooters in the ‘hood. I am working with the City as they develop some sort of guidelines so those folks that rent them will not run over us as we walk around Freemason. Renters are supposed to be over 18 and stay on the streets…………Yeah! We also have a new restaurateur at the Pagoda, Kisha and her wonderful macarons and ice cream sandwiches. YUM. We don’t meet in the summer months so we will see you on September 18th at the YMCA for our next meeting.

Farewell Freemason! Dear FSAA Members: After 36 years living on Freemason Street we have moved. We are enjoying ourselves with our daughter’s family on a horse farm in Toano, just north of Williamsburg. Debbie and Derek have constructed a studio for us with a deck that looks out on the 26 acres and pool. Our life in the Freemason Area has been exciting and rewarding. We watched the area grow with wonderful neighbors. The community spirit has always been wonderful as well as the uniqueness of everyday experiences. We will miss the cobblestones and the sound of the harbor as well as the everyday places we frequented. Life here on the farm is so peaceful and learning what James City County has to offer is exciting We are thrilled to let you know your new neighbors at 346 are Ian and Jennie Persaud. They love Freemason and are very excited starting their family there. Jennie and Ian are expecting a baby girl in October. We loved our home and nothing has made us feel better about leaving Freeman than the fact that the Persaud's will love it as much as we did. Our best to all of you and thank you for making our lives full. With deepest feeling, Joyce and Bill McKeever 10128 Fire Tower Road Toano, Virginia 23691

FSAA HISTORIC OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE

The Freemason Abbey building was built and originally dedicated as a church in 1873 by the congregation of the Second Presbyterian Church. In 1902 the congregation sold the property to the First Church of Christ Scientist, who occupied the building until 1948. From 1948 through 1987 it served as a meeting hall for the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In early 1988 the planning of the Freemason Abbey Restaurant and Tavern began. The renovation continued each day with a strong sense of pride, enthusiasm, and dedication. The skilled craftsmen changed the 142 year old structure into an exciting eating and meeting place for all to enjoy.

The changes that took place include completely furbishing the “back building”, the removal of two false ceilings, which exposed the voluminous cathedral roof trusses, and the construction of the steel framed mezzanine seating, and the new etched glass, wood framed windows on the east wall.

Who’s Who in West Freemason Our next Who’s Who has lived in West Freemason for 42 years and is a strong supporter of the FSAA and a volunteer for preservation efforts with the city. She and her husband, Gary Naigle, currently live in the Pilot House Condominium having lived there for the past 20 years. Previously, she lived in an 1885 townhome down the street for 22 years. Yes, we are featuring our friend and neighbor, Greta Gustavson! Many of you don’t know that she is a retired middle school principal (Norfolk Public Schools). During her 32 years with the school system, she had a variety of work opportunities, from teaching and administering schools and programs for pregnant teens, severely handicapped children, court adjudicated youth, long term suspended and expelled students, and my all-time favorites—middle school students. What a great and rewarding career! As Greta looks back at her early days in West Freemason there were very few people living in Freemason when she moved here in 1977; many of the older homes had been adapted for commercial or multifamily uses. There were warehouses and vacant lots where condominiums now stand. And a huge feral cat population! She has enjoyed living in West Freemason due to the proximity to downtown but even more, she loves being on the water. The scenery is always changing, and is never boring. She also enjoys walking through the neighborhood with her dog, Rosie, and seeing friends and neighbors. For favorite things to do, she and her husband have made two roundtrip transatlantic crossings on their sailboat. On the second voyage, they spent a year cruising the Mediterranean. They’ve also done coastal sailing from Maine to Florida and into the Caribbean. At the top of their list is sailing the magnificent Chesapeake Bay. For someone who is “retired”, Greta has been involved with preservation efforts in our neighborhood and throughout the City. As a member of the former Historic and Architectural and Preservation Committee, she was instrumental in rewriting the Zoning Ordinance dealing with local historic districts. She was honored to be appointed to the City’s first Architectural Review Board and is currently in her fifth year on ARB. In her “spare time” she serves as a co-chair of the Chrysler Museum of Art’s Flower Guild and president of the Harborfront Garden Club, a member-club of the Garden Club of Virginia.

Near and dear to our hearts, Greta is a “Can Do” person and has served two separate terms as president of FSAA and another two terms as secretary. She is currently on the FSAA board of directors and shares her wealth of knowledge with the board members! Thank you, Greta for all you do in West Freemason! Scooter Safety! NORFOLK, VA – Norfolk’s new Lime scooters are a new, fun and an inexpensive way to complete that final mile to your favorite destination. The City of Norfolk wants to ensure riders know where to properly ride, park and scoot around the city. Here are some scooter fast facts everyone should know: *Don’t drink and scoot/drive/ride. No matter what form of transportation you’re using.—leave the driving to someone else if you’ve been drinking. *Protect your head and wear a helmet. Like cyclists, e-scooter riders are encouraged to wear helmets while riding *Share the Road, not a scooter. Electric scooters are designed for one rider at a time. If your pal needs a ride, get them their own scooter for optimal fun and safety. *Share the road and obey all traffic laws. Be respectful of those around you. Obey all traffic signals and go with the flow of traffic. Scooters belong in the bike lane or on a street under 25 mph. Scooters are not allowed on downtown sidewalks. *Park responsibly. As a dockless system, riders can start, hold and end rides by parking the e-scooter in the public right of way (ex. bike racks, sidewalks and plazas), clear of building entrances, ramps and out of the street. *Riders 18 and over. Parents, scooters are not a toy but a transportation option. With speeds up to 20 mph, adults only please. Norfolk will continue to engage with residents and stakeholders during the rollout and duration of the pilot program to collect their feedback and evaluate the effectiveness of the program. Major issues can be reported to Lime at 1-888 -546-3345 or emailed to [email protected] For more information on how to ride Lime in Norfolk, visit https://www.norfolk.gov/lime. **Copied & modified from the City of Norfolk website.
