denly appointed U.S. president, soSutherland — an executive producer ofthe series as well as its star — deemed thestreaming service a logical home for anew Season 3. Indeed, 10 fresh episodespremiere there Friday, June 7, as Suther-land’s Tom Kirkman campaigns for a fullterm in the job he was thrust into after aterrorist attack killed the sitting chief ex-ecutive and just about every Cabinetmember.

“It’s the nature of how things go,”Sutherland reflects of “Designated Sur-vivor’s” journey. “When something isworking, you take that for that ... butwhen a network goes through leadershiptransitions, literally in this case (at ABC),you just accept that for what it is and getused to it.

“Having said that, I was aware Netflixhad the show globally, and they were in-credibly excited about the success of theshow in that capacity. I think within twodays of hearing about ABC’s decision, Iheard from The Mark Gordon Company(a major production entity behind theshow) that they were already in discus-sions with Netflix to have a Season 3, soit was pretty quick.”

That enabled “Designated Survivor” to

Kiefer Sutherland’s ‘Designated Survivor’is designated to resume on Netflix

By Jay BobbinWhen ABC canceled it, Kiefer Suther-

land suspected “Designated Survivor”would survive.

Netflix already had the rights outsideNorth America to the drama about a sud-

retain much of its cast, also includingItalia Ricci, Kal Penn, Adan Canto andMaggie Q. The third season adds An-thony Edwards, who previously workedwith new showrunner Neal Baer on “ER,”and Tony Award winner Julie White.

Sutherland likes the Netflix formula thatdrops all of a show’s season at once: “Myonly previous experience with that waswith people who would not watch ‘24’until they got the DVD sets, and theyended up loving the show more than any-body because they watched it withoutcommercials. And they watched it at theirown pace, so when they wanted anotherepisode, they got to have it.”

There’s also a creative appeal to having“Designated Survivor” on Netflix, sinceSutherland explains that “various net-works will not let you use China or Rus-sia. They’ll have you make up a countryfor you to have your conflict with. Netflixis not that, so we get to dive into some ofthese situations in a much more realisticway.”

Also with a country-music career goingstrong with the recent release of his sec-ond album, “Reckless & Me,” Sutherlandis finding it “tiring” but gratifying to bal-ance that and acting. “In the end, youmake room for the things you love to do,”he reasons. “Acting is the love of my life, but music is now, too. And the commondenominator between the two is story-telling.”

Kiefer Sutherland stars in the new Sea-son 3 of “Designated Survivor,” whichbegins streaming Friday on Netflix.

Son of Famed Navy Diver Carl Brashear to Speak at Bayonne Library on June 4;

Father’s Life Inspired Men of Honor FilmMayor Jimmy Davis announced that DaWayne Brashear, son

of famed Navy Master Diver/Master Chief Boatswain’s MateCarl Brashear, will speak at the Bayonne Public Library’s sec-ond floor gallery on Tuesday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m. Carl Brasheargraduated from the U.S. Navy’s Diving and Salvage School inBayonne in 1954, becoming the first African-American to doso. He was also the first black diver in the U.S. Navy. The div-ing school was located at Bayonne’s Naval Supply Depot, which was later called the Military Ocean Terminal. A newstreet at the former base will be named after Carl Brashear.

DaWayne Brashear’s presentation will be one in a series ofspecial events taking place in 2019 to celebrate the 150th an-niversary of the City of Bayonne. Mayor Davis said, “Wewould like to thank DaWayne Brashear for coming to Bayonneto make this presentation about the life of his father. We arehonored that our former Navy base played such a pivotal rolein the life of Carl Brashear.”

Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate Brashear served the Navy inthe United States, Guam, and Europe. While taking part in a

tastytv by George Dickie‘Man Fire Food’ host

Mooking has a burningpassion for barbecueAsk Roger Mooking of “Man Fire Food” what

initially inspired his love of barbecue and he willgive a surprisingly candid answer.“I used to love fire and playing with fire and

luckily I had no major accidents with fire,” hesays with a laugh. “... You know, Ithink that’s just a primal human in-stinct to be enamored with the fireand being around it. ... I just hadthis affinity with it growing up andwhen I started to cook and kind ofwent through regular traditionalrestaurants and kitchens and cater-ing companies and hotels, you’rekind of like yearning to see like whatelse can we do with cooking andthen the live fire thing, I kind ofreached back to my history of just loving fire andstarted diving into that. And next thing you know,I’m traveling around eating all this fire-cookedfood.”Now in its eighth season Wednesdays on Cook-

ing Channel, the series finds Mooking, an accom-plished chef, restaurateur, musician andcookbook author, traveling the country searchingfor more people who cook with fire, the contrap-tions they use and the dishes they create withthem. is season’s episodes focus more on global

cuisines and take Mooking to such locales as NewOrleans, Bakersfield, Calif., and stops throughoutTexas to see how people are putting their ownspins on international foods through barbecue. That was evident in last week’s episode in Hous-

ton, where a Japanese favorite got a Texas touch.“What we did is we smoked a brisket and we

made some sushi from nigiri with smokedbrisket on top of it,” he explains. “It was reallygood. ... The rice has the kind of sweet and the

tang and the soft texture and thebrisket is soft and fatty and smokyand there are spices on there aswell. So you get a full bang in onebite.”Houston, which has a large Viet-

namese population, was also whereMooking got to try one local’s inter-pretation of pho, a traditional soup.“It’s a smoked brisket pho,” he

says, “so Vietnamese soup with thenoodles, the whole thing, a really

delicious broth that’s a recipe that he learnedfrom his mother and he puts smoked brisket ontop of it as well. So again, really simple and you’dthink that somebody would have done that beforebecause a lot of pho comes with brisket but thissmoked thing just added a whole other layer to itand it was a real Texas-style brisket.”“So it was the Texas thing and the Vietnamese

thing all coming together with an old familyrecipe and it just made sense,” he continues,“And it was a beautiful thing.”

TV PIPELINEby Jay BobbinQ: What did Hoda Kotb do before she became aco-anchor of “Today”? — Christine Barker,Palm Coast, Fla.A: Her first job in TV news was as an assistantfor CBS News in Cairo in the mid-1980s, andthen she worked as an anchor and/or reporterat stations in Illinois, Mississippi, Louisiana (NewOrleans, specifically) and Florida.Kotb joined NBC News in 1998 asa national correspondent, but herimage with that division largely be-came cemented when she joinedKathie Lee Gifford for the fourthhour of “Today” starting in 2007.With Gifford’s recent exit, she’snow partnered with Jenna BushHager for that hour — and shealso continues as SavannahGuthrie’s principal anchoring part-ner on the main two hours of“Today,” a situation that happened quite sud-denly in the fall of 2017 when NBC parted com-pany with then-co-host Matt Lauer.Q: I heard that “Lethal Weapon” has been can-celed. Is that true? — Pat Donnelly, via e-mailA: Yes. That the Fox series got a Season 3 ordera year ago was last-minute luck, since there wasno guarantee it would continue after the firingof star Clayne Crawford — but a deal was madefor Seann William Scott to board the show as anew character to partner with Damon Wayans

Sr.’s Roger Murtaugh.Whether Wayans himself would continue thenbecame a question mark, since he publicly saidlast fall that he was ready to walk, due to whathe voiced as his dissatisfaction with long work-ing hours that cut into his family time substan-tially. Eventually, an agreement was struck forhim to stay, at least at that time; the questionof whether that would have held for Season 4 ismoot now.

Q: I missed “Dancing With theStars” this spring. Will it be back inthe fall? — Donna Cramer,Grafton, OhioA: It will. You can expect to seehosts Tom Bergeron and Erin An-drews back in the ballroom withmany of the returning dance prosand a new group of celebrity con-testants, since ABC has renewedthe competition for its 28th season.Besides making the show more of

an event again with it staged only once per tele-vision year (despite the “Juniors” spinoff thatwas attempted last fall), the reduced schedulealso addresses the abundance of reality pro-gramming that the network now has in the earlymonths of the calendar year. Mondays remainreserved for “The Bachelor,” which also hasbeen renewed — and in the interim betweenthat and the spring start of “The Bachelorette,”additional episodes of the then-in-season“American Idol” have been used to help fill theMonday gap.

of Truth,” starting its second-season U.S.run Sunday, June 2, on The CW after al-ready having aired in its (and her) nativeCanada. The show was conceived arounda toxic-waste-caused illness affectingyoung women in the hometown ofKreuk’s character, attorney Joanna Han-

ley, but a new season means anew case.

“When we went in to pitch theshow,” Kreuk says, “Brad Simp-son — who created it — alreadyhad a sense of what the secondseason would be about and looklike. Joanna moves to Winnipeg, and her client is a young hackerwho’s an activist for good. I thinkthat part was a bit more challeng-ing for the writing team, to comeup with a case that could tie backin throughout the season.”

Still, Kreuk feels the new storyreflects a major “Burden ofTruth” theme, which she terms“intergenerational trauma. All ofthe characters are dealing withthe mistakes their parents made,or with the way they were raised,or with the way society hastreated them. We get to push the

characters into challenges regarding whothey are, so that they can become less tiedto that trauma. And that gives us a back-bone for the show.”

While Joanna has relocated, her friendand recent colleague Billy (played by“Rookie Blue” alum Peter Mooney) re-mains in the town of Millwood, dealingwith fallout from the first-season case —but they won’t stay apart for long. Withthat said, the latest round of “Burden ofTruth” largely explores Joanna as herown person.

“She wants to change, but it’s reallyhard to change,” reasons Kreuk. “I thinkfor all of us, it’s really rare that we makegiant leaps in our progress as individuals. The way she has functioned is throughwork, with the billable hour the most im-portant thing to her ... and with no sociallife. For the first time, she is challengedto be a human being in her work, whichis really hard for her. It forces her to pushherself, which results in some humor thatis nice to see.”

Canada’s CBC network has ordered aSeason 3 of “Burden of Truth.” Whilealso executive-producing a documentaryabout Indian “bandit queen” PhoolanDevi, Kreuk is gratified by fans’ accept-ance of Joanna: “She’s unwilling to riskthe pain of loss, so she doesn’t let herselflove or be loved, and I get a lot of mes-sages from people saying that they reallyfeel that.”
