Matting zones can be complicated...There are three main zones that define the entrance matting area each have different functions...

did you know? Most recessed matwells are 16-17mm deep although they can vary from 12mm, 17mm, 22mm to up to 44mm deep

This is the first line of defence, protecting against and removing heavy particulate soiling. It should be located outside the entrance or immediately inside. Products for this area need to be designed for direct rainfall and anti-slip properties. If you do not have an external well, one can be created or a surface mount solution can be offered. Zone One is not always an option for every Centre and this should be discussed during the original consultation.

Zone 1 - External Primary Matting

This is the main line of defence, designed to effectively remove foot borne moisture and finer soiling particles. This Zone will be a recessed mat well area and is the most important in terms of effectiveness and also aesthetics, as it is the first impression of your centre.

Zone 2 - Internal Primary Matting

This zone ensures that all moisture and fine dirt particles are removed before traffic progresses onto the interior flooring. Often, if the Zone 2 area is sufficient in size then the third Zone may not be required. Zone 3 can be a secondary barrier carpeting solution or a surface mounted primary matting solution. In order to avoid trips, it should be no more than 12mm from the surrounding flooring in order to avoid trips.

Zone 3 - Secondary Matting

An innovative service available to Shopping Centres, whereby an existing matwell is extended by mounting the well over an existing surface. This removes the need for excavation - which is costly and disruptive.

New wells can be excavated by cutting out the existing surface and digging down create a new recess. New matwell frames should then be installed i.e 38mm or 50mm deep.

The frames would then be secured and screeded to the correct depth for the chosen product.

Surface Mount Matwells

Surface mounted wells offered by Syncros can be installed at a quarter of the cost of some excavated wells. Examples of some successfully surface mounted matwells can be seen at these Shopping Centres:

• Pentagon Shopping Centre, Chatham• Swindon Outlet Centre• Brent Cross Shopping Centre• Hammersmith Shopping Centre
