A local resident, seeingand hearing the plane’sapproach, rang for the firebrigade. Fortunately, theprivate owner landed hisailing aircraft without fur-ther incident and theemergency services werestood down before they ar-rived. On the followingTuesday engineers re-paired the aircraft whichthen returned to its baseat Biggin Hill.Adrian added: “When allthe initial excitement haddied down, the incidentunderlined the fact thatKenley Airfield is just that,an airfield, and aircraft inserious difficulties willchoose to land there, whether or not the glidersof 615 VGS or Surrey HillsGliding Club are operating.People who wander overthe airfield at any time putthemselves in harm’s way.”For more informationabout Surrey Hills GlidingClub visit www.southlon-dongliding.co.uk

Recruiting and retaining
good teachersby Mark PhillipsHeadteacher of de Stafford School
Students at de Stafford arelucky to have some verygood teachers who havestayed at the school andare able to offer them avery stable learning envi-ronment. However, this is not thecase in all Surrey schools.Headteachers in Surreyknow how hard it is to re-place good teachers whenthey move on, and it is nolonger a problem confinedto just Maths and Science.Five years ago, if I placedan advert for a Historyteacher, I would have re-ceived at least fifteen goodapplications. Having justplaced a national adverttwo weeks ago, I receivedonly one very poor applica-tion from a teacher noteven living in the UK; thisis the case for most areasof the curriculum.
As an older teacher(painful as it is for me toadmit to) with overtwenty years teaching ex-perience, I am looking ata changed professionwhere newly qualifiedteachers only stay in therole for an average of fiveyears before moving on toanother career. Many ofthose leaving the profes-sion are highly talentedbut simply cannot affordto live in this area on thesalary that is paid to newteachers. Surrey schoolsare faced with an addi-tional problem: when wedo find excellent youngpeople who want to pur-sue a career in educationwe find ourselves unableto compete with schools inCroydon and the innerLondon Boroughs, whoare funded to pay higher
salaries through the Lon-don Allowance system. Thecost of living is no differentin Caterham to Croydonand yet members of ourstaff are paid less.I am sure that everyone inthe local community wantsthe best for our children, and to achieve this wemust encourage the gov-ernment and County Coun-cil to invest in schools, ensuring that we can at-tract the best teachers tostay in this area. Unlikeother public sector profes-sions that the media usesto compare teachers to,this is a career only opento graduates and must beable to offer the same re-wards as other careers atthis level.

For both experienced fly-fishermen and newcomersto the sport, the tranquillake at Leigh Mill is one ofGodstone’s hidden treas-ures. Set in three acres ofbeautiful woodland, the pri-vate lake is fed by a freshwater spring and two under-ground springs, providingwell-oxygenated waterwhere fish thrive. As hometo Leigh Mill Fly Fishing Syn-dicate, the lake is stockedevery three to four weekswith top quality rainbow andoccasionally brown trout.Fishing is growing in popu-larity, especially amongstwomen. There are approxi-mately four million anglersin this country, more than inany other sport. Describingthe appeal of the sport, Clubmember, Doug Newdicksaid: “Once you havehooked that first fish theadrenalin gets you goingand you are hooked! It’s abit like playing golf and try-ing to get a hole in oneevery time.” Fellow member, AndrewSampson added: “You areconstantly doing somethingwith fly fishing, you neverstand still. It requires alot of concentration so youfind you forget about every-thing else which is verytherapeutic.” Many youngsters arealso finding the sport arefreshing alternative to
spending hours indoors infront of computer games.Junior angler, Henrik Wet-ter, said: “I enjoy fly fish-ing both for the challenge ofcasting the right fly, in theright place at the right timeand the excitement ofhooking and playing thefish. Although I releasemost of the fish I catch, Ialso love eating trout! Andall that in beautiful sur-roundings....”The Syndicate has a limitednumber of openings for newmembers - not just experi-enced anglers but newcom-ers to the sport too andtuition is available for be-ginners. Beatby Tandridge Neigh-bourhood InspectorElaine BurtenshawYou may remember me writ-ing about NeighbourhoodPanels and how the Cater-ham community really doesinfluence the policing priori-ties in the area. At the endof March I attended theCaterham-on-the-Hill panelmeeting and was able to dis-cuss the on-going issuesraised around tackling anti-social behaviour in the area.Another concern was vehiclevandalism, in particular inOak Road. I can assure youmy team is doing all theycan to resolve the situationby providing suitable long-term solutions. The nextmeeting is on Wednesday,28th May, and I hope youwill all be able to attend.I am looking forward to at-tending the Caterham ValleyParish Council AGM on Tues-day, 13th May, and to meet-ing as many of you aspossible.Last month, BBC One’sCrimewatch reconstructedthe sexual assault that oc-curred in Whyteleafe in De-cember. At the time of theincident I used my columnto appeal for anyone with in-formation to come forward. For those of you who sawthe programme I am sureyou will agree this was a vi-olent and terrifying attackon two young women. Ateam of detectives fromCaterham CID are investi-
gating this assault but Iwould again urge anyonewho has any informationabout the incident to pleasepick up the phone and speakwith officers at Surrey Policeon 0845 125 2222 or callCrimestoppers anonymouslyon 0800 555 111. Sadly car crime seems tohave increased in Tandridgerecently. We had a spate ofcriminal damage caused tovehicles parked at Morrisonscar park in April and wehave also seen a rise in thenumber of thefts from motorvehicles. My crime reductionofficer, PC John Lee, and Ihave met with Morrisons’area security manager andadvised on different waystheir car park security canbe improved. We are work-ing with Morrisons towardsthe Safer Car Park award.Motorists can also play theirpart by not leaving valuableson display. Simple measurescan drastically reduce yourchances of becoming a vic-tim of vehicle crime and byimplementing thesechanges, and working to-gether, we can crack vehiclecrime. During the serv-ice, the County Commis-sioner presented me with aMedal of Merit, for out-standing service to theScout Movement. Afterwards, we paraded toTimber Hill recreationground where the salutewas taken by Cllr. Steve Al-tria, Chairman of TandridgeDistrict Council. An aerielphoto was also taken of allthose present to commem-orate 100 years of Scout-ing in Caterham.
On St. George’s day itself, around 600 youngstersproudly wore their Scoutand Guide, Cub Scout andBrownie, or Beaver Scoutand Rainbow uniforms toschool for the day. Everyschool in Caterham partic-ipated, as well as manyothers in the surroundingarea. I went to Woodleaand Hamsey Green Infantsschools, and there weremany children happily run-ning around, looking smartin their uniforms. Therewere also many leaderswearing their uniforms atwork that day.I started this about sixyears ago, and the idea isslowly spreading throughCroydon and Surrey. Credit Crunch -
Global Meltdown
or Opportunity?
by Jerry Connor
‘Recession’, ‘Market Melt-down’, ‘Mortgage May-hem’, ‘FTSE Crashing’,‘Banking Collapse’.These are just some ofthe headlines in the lastfew months leading sometop market commenta-tors to observe that 2008has become the mostvolatile, turbulent marketin living memory.Without doubt, these areunprecedented times. Wehave witnessed bankscrash both in the UK andUS as the financial mar-kets struggle to cope withmassive fluctuations intheir ability to borrowmoney. However, is it alldoom and gloom? If you are a saver or along-term investor thencash saving rates andopportunities for pickingup some good valuestocks have not been asattractive as this for sometime. If you had investments ingold (not necessarily goldbars!), government bondsor cash in the first quarterof 2008 you would havemade some money evenas other markets havefallen. Therefore, thereare always short-termopportunities in volatilemarkets.
However, history tells usit is the stock marketwhere consistent inflationbeating returns can bemade, so don’t panic!Often the best time tobuy is when others areselling. Taking the longer-term view, the last threeto five years have been agreat time to be investedin the stock market. Itlooks increasingly likelythat interest rates will becoming down too, so thisis also good news forthose amongst us withmortgages. So if you are a long terminvestor, have a mortgagewhich can benefit fromfalling interest rates orhave lots of gold barsunder your bed (or youhave invested in a fundin that sector) then thereare in the words of IanDrury some ‘reasons tobe cheerful’ even whenthe headlines suggestotherwise.

As spring flowering bulbsand plants begin to fade, perhaps now is the time toconsider a bordermakeover. Borders canbecome somewhat sadlooking as the individualshrubs and plants becomestraggly but it is not nec-essary to dig out every-thing and start again. Some mature planting is avaluable asset to any gar-den and a good pruningmay well revive manysmall trees, shrubs and
climbers. Some plants arerelatively short lived andsome do not respond tohard pruning after beingneglected. These includeLavatera, most rock roses(cistus) and broom(cytisus). Also, mostconifers do not re-growfrom old wood, so extracare is needed when cut-ting back.Once well-past-their-bestshrubs have been re-moved and the remaininghave been cut back, youwill have an idea as to thenumber of new plants thatwill be required.Perennials live for at leasttwo years and usuallymany more and mostherbaceous varieties willdie back in the autumnand can be cut back toground level. There arethousands of perennialsavailable and they willprovide splashes of colourthroughout the summerand early autumn. Someare evergreen and, there-fore, will provide bothcolour and valuableground cover in winter.
If you are purchasing fromgarden centres, you willfind many beautiful peren-nials available. Theycome in all shapes andsizes, in many differentcolours and a herbaceousborder can be designedto emphasise the styleyou have chosen for yourgarden. As is the case with allplants, care should betaken to ensure that theyare suitable for both theaspect and soil conditions.Plants that require protec-tion from strong winds areunlikely to thrive in anopen aspect. Likewise,acid-loving plants, such asazaleas, camellias, dwarfrhododendrons andheathers are not likely totolerate an alkaline soil.Such is the standard ofmost garden centres nowthat information on indi-vidual shrubs is readilyavailable, usually on theplant label. If you are indoubt as to a plant’s suit-ability, seek expert advicebefore buying it.Happy gardening.

Jazz fans flockto Sylvia’s ClubThe Post Office Social Clubin Trenham Drive, HamseyGreen, was packed for theopening night of Sylvia’sClub last month. The audi-ence was transported backto the trad jazz boom of thefifties and early sixties bythe sophisticated sound ofThe J.J. Vinten Band accom-panied by Dave Hewett onhis trombone. Dave Hewett, who openedthe club, said: “We needpeople to open clubs tokeep this music going be-cause there is nothing likeit. Where else do you findsuch improvisation? We areslowly losing jazz playersand I can now put somework out there for jazz play-ers to help keep it alive.”Dave has been playing jazzsince the age of 19 and hasperformed at home andabroad with some of the topnames in jazz. “We used toplay at The Cavern with ascruffy bunch that used tocome on and play their gui-tars in the interval,” recalledDave. It turned out they
were The Beatles. A yearlater we were the onesplaying in the interval andthe jazz boom finished.”The Post Office Social Clubin Trenham Drive is an idealvenue providing smart butcomfortable surroundings,a stage and dancefloor andan excellent bar. An EssentialTreat by Julia ChurchI recently visited EssentialsHealth & Beauty Centre,Raglan Precinct, Caterham-on-the-Hill and was pleas-antly surprised at howspacious it is. I was given awarm welcome by Susie andher team and taken on a tourof the salon. I was very im-pressed by the wonderful am-bience and stunningrefurbishment that has takenplace in the last two years.Apart from their extensiverange of treatments alreadyon offer, the staff are very ex-cited about their newestproduct, Side-by-Side Pam-pering, that was launched on1st May. There are seven af-fordable packages on offer –one of which takes in thewhole day and includes lunch– where you and a maximumof two other people can enjoythe experience of having yourtreatments performed in thesame room, at the same
time. There is even a specialevening package when cou-ples, as in friends or part-ners, can relax with aluxurious Elemis full bodymassage and appropriate fa-cial. Clients are of courseable to enjoy these specialpackages individually.Whilst at the salon, I decidedto try out sugaring, which isas close as you can get to anenjoyable form of hair re-moval. Only natural ingredi-ents are used and the pasteis applied, and removed, byhand but only to the hairsand not the skin, thereby
ensuring virtually no reac-tion. As the hairs are pulledout cleanly by the roots, reg-ular treatments gradually di-minish re-growth. I wasvery impressed with the re-sult!Essentials is definitely wortha visit, not only to try outtheir regular treatments butalso to experience some oftheir more unusual onessuch as the Makeover andPhotoshoot which is a com-plete experience on its own.For more information or tobook an appointment, callthe salon on 01883 342264.

Readers’ lettersRose & YoungI agree with the commentsin the April edition of yourpaper. The Rose & Youngsite has been a blot on thelandscape for far too long. Why don’t the council sortMr O'Riordon out? Why arethey delaying getting rid ofthis eyesore? Maybe he isjust waiting for the site toincrease in value so he canbecome a millionaire twiceover. The same thing is happen-ing with the old Rover sitenext to the library in West-way, Caterham-on-the-Hill.Another eyesore which wewill probably have to put upwith, same as the Valleyresidents have had to. Thecouncil can get things doneif it suits them.Barbara Collins, Chaldon.
I have recently arrived backin the UK after living inAustralia for over 15 years. In the first few days of ourarrival, we observed theRose & Young site andthought that it was a realblot on the landscape. Iagree with the comments ofthe people you interviewed, but I do think that the sitehas more potential than justbeing another car park. With some good visionaryplanning, the languishing

“Thank you” to SurreyPoliceI would like to bring to theattention of other CaterhamValley residents and busi-ness owners the excellentservice that we havereceived from Surrey Policein recent years. This service has included:Officers arriving within threeminutes following a break-inat our shop during the night.A few minutes later a dogunit arrived and a forensicsteam the following morning. The burglars were appre-hended, successfully prose-cuted and forced by theCourts to provide financialcompensation; When we reported graffitithat appeared near our shopwe were advised by PCSOVicky Seymour that it hadbeen observed during a rou-tine patrol, photographedand the ‘tags’ had alreadybeen checked.Highlights of the servicemust be the championing ofthe radio-link network forlocal retailers and the rapid, dedicated service thatwe receive from thePCSOs (and in particularVicky Seymour, Nick Stone
site could be developed intoa smart retail centre withsome good clothing stores(Top Shop, Next and Marksand Spencer) that the townsorely needs. A two or threescreen cinema and somefurther restaurants wouldalso be a welcome addition. In summary I think thatsome good targeted invest-ment would bring jobs andalso give some neededregeneration to the area.Robert Bradlow, Cater-ham-on-the-Hill.
As a family we agree withthe other members of thepublic who think the site ofthe Rose & Young buildingwould be most useful toeveryone if made into extracar parking space.H. Bass, Caterham-on-the-Hill.
St. George’s DayWe drove through the vil-lage of Crowhurst on the23rd April and were ex-tremely impressed by thepatriotism shown in thevillage. All down the road they hadmade St. George Flags onwooden stakes placed onboth sides of the road at ap-proximately 33 yards apart.Nearly all the houses alsohad St. George flags flying.

To perform at theirbest, players must have justthe right mix of aerobic andanaerobic endurance, ex-plosive strength and power, speed off the mark andagility. Victory for Old Cats Under 9’sby Russell TaylorOn Sunday 13th April 2008,Old Caterhamians RFCUnder 9’s took part in theSurrey DevelopmentRugby Festival. This is avery popular annual rugbyfestival, where young boysand girls play for the cov-eted title of ‘Surrey Devel-opment Champions’. There were 19 teams in thisage group. The Old Catsboys beat teams fromStreatham & Croydon,Farnborough and Dorkingrugby clubs to get throughto the semi-finals. Eachmatch was a closely foughtevent, played in the truespirit of rugby, against veryworthy opponents. Each ofthe 14 strong Old Catssquad contributed to theteam’s success, playingwith passion, determinationand commitment. In thesemis Old Cats came upagainst Farnham and aftera very tight game, cameout victorious, one try tonil. This took them to afinal against Chobham,a club with an excellentpedigree. The hugely competitive
final was nil-nil at half time, however some fine teamplay by Old Cats culminatedin two tries being scored, with Chobham being unableto break down the impene-trable Old Cats defensiveline. This was the team’s onlyfestival for this season, their first one playing fullcontact rugby. The coachesand parents alike were im-mensely proud of theirachievement and the waythe whole squad pulled to-gether, scoring nine triesthroughout the tourna-ment, but not concedingany in the process. Old Cats is a very popularclub and this success forthe Under 9’s will only drivethem on to try for furthersuccesses in the future. In 2009 they are aiming toenter an international rugbyfestival in Paris. Should anyone be inter-ested in joining the cluband playing great rugby, ina family friendly environ-ment, please check out ourwebsite atwww.oldcats.co.uk/
