T he Sovereign Hill Community Association will be holding its AGM on Sunday the

1st of November at 4pm at Sovereign House All residents are encouraged to attend. Watch your emails and letterboxes for the

Agenda and Community Survey that will be delivered soon to all Sovereign Hill residents. For more information please call Kerry on 0437 903 138 or Sue 0417 978 281.

The Moore River News has been in publication for 30

years. It changed from the Woodridge Newsletter to the

Moore River News in 1990.

There have been many, many volunteers over those years

who have given up time to produce, collect and deliver our

local rag. The introduction of email was so significant,

locals could easily send in local news and photos.

Just wanted to thank everyone who regularly contributes.

Gandhi said "without a paper, a journal of some kind you

cannot unite a community".

Letter of Thanks

Recently I had the misfortune of falling into the back of my trailer pulled by a 100kg gas bottle on a wet day. Unfortunately I sustained injuries that required the medical chopper to transport me to RPH. I would like to thank everyone who assisted me on that day. I recall many around me helping in various ways to which I owe a big thank you. Also a thank you to the unknown local who drove my 4wd and trailer back to my house and installed the new gas bottle. Gardening for November

Hi everyone. Another exciting month ahead with the weather warming as we get closer to Summer. Veges to plant – Seeds – Bean, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, carrot, celery, cucumber, lettuce, marrow, melon, white onion, parsnip, pea, pumpkin, radish, silver beet, spinach, sweetcorn, tomato, zucchini – Seedlings – cabbage, capsicum, celery, eggplant, leek, silver beet, spinach, tomato Jobs – Mulch, mulch, mulch - and don’t forget to mulch. 3 to 4 inches deep to suppress weeds and keep the moisture in. Mulch to within a couple of inches of trunks and stalks, but not right up to them to prevent collar rot. Liquid fertilize veges every two weeks. Worm wee is full of nutrients too. Aphids are out in force already so spray them now and keep an eye out. Spraying once only deals with that generation. Others will soon arrive. Spray the plant thoroughly because Aphids will hide everywhere. If you are planting natives look for WA natives. Plants can be labelled native however native to other states might have different water and nutrient requirements. Some plants native to other states can also thrive too well in WA and they can become invasive to drains, paths or garden beds. Prune shrubs as they finish flowering. This helps keep them compact and can lead to more flowers next flowering season. Spray apple and pear trees for codling and light brown apple moth. Submerge pots and hanging baskets in a buckets of water and remove when bubbling stops. Techheads – I have been listening to The Garden Clinic: Highlights. It is eastern states based and is full of plugs for products. however I have found it very informative. It is very similar in format to the ABC Radio garden program presented by Graham Ross. Nathan

After many years of working for our Community as a member of the WCA and the Spring Fair, we say goodbye to Mariner Tutavaha and a huge thank you for all you have done and shared with the Woodridge community. We received a number of wish lists from various groups, they will receive notification regarding the outcomes and an invitation to attend the next meeting on November 8th to receive their certificates. We are looking for volunteers to help out at Bunnings sausage sizzle on 20th December. Anyone with a spare 2 hours would be gratefully received. Please ring Di McKie on 0419 150 759 or Marg Browne on 0437 487 378 if you are able to assist. We are pleased to note the Moore River Youth Group has managed to get some help to keep this group moving forward. These children are our future . At the Public meeting in September it was decided to form a sub committee to obtain information with the idea to upgrade our Woodridge Community Park grounds. They are in the early stages of collecting information. Anyone with ideas that can help please contact the WCA. The cleaner’s contract was discussed and a new cleaner has been appointed to the Hall. Also, the air conditioners are in the process of being cleaned and maintained. There is a quite an amount of information being exchanged between the Shire of Gingin and WCA regarding the King Drive erosion. As you will notice a patching job has again been done. We understand a proper renovation of the area will be undertaken in the summertime. Watch this space! November is the proposed date to erect the BEN signs before Summer and the crowds arrive. Now the important Dates and times to remember. Sunday 8th November will be a free breakfast for all Woodridge residents at the hall starting at 8.00am The AGM for the Woodridge Community Association will be held immediately after this at 10.00 am. This will be followed with morning tea of scones, jam and cream. A very good reason to spend all morning at the park. Hope to see many of you there in lieu of our annual Spring Fair which, of course, had to be cancelled due to COVID-19. Marg

October was a very quiet meeting probably due to school

holidays. However as is often the case, we got a lot done.

Four of us rediscovered the Windows 10 program Video

Editor that creates videos from photos and /or videos, plus

making text to explain what is going on and adding

background music. Another two delved into the depths of

the email app Outlook. It really is the time for you to come

along if you have a problem, or need to have something

explained to you. None of us are professionals; we just

share what we know.

A tip I got while on a garden club outing, was that many of

us go camping or caravanning and want to either get TV or

watch a film say on Netflix. It has been discovered that if

one phone is the means to access mobile data, another

phone or lap top is needed to actually access the web.

Another way is to download the Netflix films onto your

laptop before you go.

In the October class we made a hot spot on a mobile

phone, connected it a laptop, then used a cable to hook the

laptop to a TV screen via a HDMI plug. It all depends on

what size screen you want to see, or have room for. We

bought the TV from the Golf Club sale in Guilderton. So

much to buy!

Wendy and Kerry have done an awesome job of compiling our Cookbook which is currently being printed. There are over 150 recipes, many over a hundred years old having been handed down through the generations.

We are very hopeful of the first copies being available at the Men’s Shed Open Day. It will make a great Christmas Gift as will many of our other items which have been handcrafted by our small group.

There are many beanies which will be ideal for overseas gifts now that their weather is becoming wintry. Our knitted cacti will take pride of place in your house or make a most unusual gift, especially for those who just do not have ‘Green fingers’.

We meet every Monday 9.30am at Sovereign House, a small group, we would love to share cuppa with you.

This Month’s Scripture "...early the next morning Jesus was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery......Teacher, they said to Jesus, 'this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her, what do you say?' They were trying to trap him.....but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, 'All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!' When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one.....and Jesus stooped down again and wrote in the dust......then he stood up and said to the woman, 'Where are your accusers? Didn't even one of them condemn you?' 'No Lord,' she said. And Jesus said, 'Neither do I, but go and sin no more.' John 8:1-11 (New Living Translation) MOORE PRAYER: As a small group we pray regularly for the needs we see around us in this community and in our families and friends. Friends of Moore River Estuary Inc.

Friends of Moore River Estuary Inc. held their AGM on September 26th. It was good to see old and new members and Shane Love, our hard working State member, take the trouble to attend.

With the whole land parcel of Moore River Company's 2,100ha at Moore River South still for sale (it's been 5 years now), our main focus is now on the creation of Wilbinga Regional Park, between the city boundary at Two Rocks and the estuary/Woodridge

southern boundary. A long term project that needs many partners to see the land protected for the many threatened species such as banksias, tuarts and the Carnabys cockatoos. The area would also be available for people to visit, camp and enjoy. Just not trash! We continue our estuary water monitoring project, with our next venture on Friday November 27th. Contact me on 0414-631-273 if you'd like to join us.

Well another busy month for our Volunteers with 22 call outs. Any time of the day or night we are there for you. Skills are still held twice a month so we can be kept up to date with old and new technology. First aid classes are held regularly and classes for younger folk are encouraged. A smaller person can also be a life saver by just knowing how to call 000, knowing exact address and a short description of problem. Our wonderful depot has our administrator in attendance twice a week, so please call in and say Hi and check out the First Aid produce for sale. Also do discuss Ambulance cover, as a trip by Ambulance to Joondalup can be very costly. Family cover is very reasonable, so check it out. With summer nearly upon this is a timely reminder to be aware snakes are on the move, so brush up on your snake first aid. If no bandages available near, a tee shirt wound firmly will suffice. If your first aid isn't up to scratch at least know how to treat a snake bite. CPR is another very important skill everyone must learn. Also remember when at beach or river be mindful of the depth of water if diving and always be careful. Remember too, when driving on IOD always be ready for the inevitable!! That is someone not adhering to road rules and coming at you from in front or behind. Every day people are alarmed at stupid road use. As always, stay safe and well. Anne Gault.

Lower Coastal

Community Alliance The meeting in Woodridge on the 21st of October was very interesting. Topics included a Community Bus for the lower coastal area, the Toilet Block, Library and Visitor Centre in Guilderton, the Community Nurse and the Road Noise on Indian Ocean Drive. We discussed past and future events. This is a relaxed way for Seabird, Redfield Park, Sovereign Hill and Woodridge residents to help each other in a community spirit. We always appreciate the presence of Helen Sutherland from the Shire. Unfortunately no councillors could attend the October meeting. However, we have had a meeting with Cher and Les Crichton Executive Manager of Corporate and Community Services, re the possibility of a community bus. This process of finding a location for the bus and funding will take time but we have made a start. So far about twenty local groups have shown interest in the project. If your group is not on the list please contact Anne Stroud on 0428 188011. Next meeting for the groups will be on Thursday 26th November 11am in Guilderton café. Jenny Walker is going to contact Main Roads about the road noise, this affects three of our communities and rest assured, the LCCA will follow up as a priority. As usual Julie Polette will be in charge of sending out the minutes of these meeting to those of you who have registered with the LCCA. Anne Stroud

We held our monthly training session at the Fire Station

on Sunday 18th October with many of our members in

attendance. We received training on our new VHF hand

held radios, plus a demonstration on how to use the

defibs that we now carry on each fire truck.

Our next training session will be held on Sunday 22nd

November between 9am and 12 noon.

Santa and Mrs. Claus will be coming to Woodridge on

Sunday 20th December and the Xmas lolly run will start at

4pm from the Fire Station. We look forward to seeing you

all!

Prohibited burning period starts on NOVEMBER 22ND.

We are often asked what BBQs can be used during a total

fire ban and prohibited burning periods. During these

times you can use both electric or gas BBQs. Solid fuel

BBQs cannot be used when the fire danger is very high or

during the prohibited burning season. You may use solid

fuel BBQs during the restricted burning period as long as

you have obtained a Fire Permit . No Fire Permit is needed

to use them during the unrestricted burning period.

REMEMBER : During the prohibited burning period you

need to have no flammable material within a 3 metre

radius of your gas or electric BBQ.

WATCHERS

It is so lovely to have these beautiful sunny days. More outdoors activities I hope for most of us. Now we can think “salads" and not so much “stews and casseroles” which of course are delicious but do need lots of mash potatoes (I do anyway). Over the next few weeks members are going to bring in healthy recipes (written). There are so many quick and easy ways to eat healthier without missing out on favourite foods. It is mainly about portion sizes. One of these recipes will be made to bring in each week. We have booked “Staying on Your Feet” to come to our club next February. This will be open to all communities. More information will be posted early next year. We celebrated one of our long-term members 80th Birthday this month. Sylvia was there in the beginning of Weight Watchers and is still a very active member. As always we welcome everyone to pop in on Wednesday morning. We are a small group but a happy group of likeminded people who really do encourage each other. What’s the old saying “If you never ever go, you will never ever know”. On Tuesday the 6th October we were very pleased to see that some mothers with school aged children accepted

our invitation to come and join us for morning tea and to participate in some of the crafts. Some of the children were interested in card making while a few others tried their hand at knitting. We are repeating the invitation for interested mothers with school aged children to join us on Tuesday the 19th January and Tuesday the 26th January which, as well as scrapbooking, knitting,

card making and crochet they can try their hand at sewing and learn how to make a tote bag. Come along, we would love to see you. We are all busy with our various crafts after the excitement of our trip to Margaret River. This month we had our quarterly lunch on the 27th when we were treated to really delicious sandwiches and mouth-watering sweets. Thanks to all the ladies who provided the food. It was delicious as usual. In November we are looking forward to Melbourne Cup Day when some of our ladies wear very creative hats and on the following Tuesday we will be going on a bus trip to Fremantle. If you are interested in joining us please call Terri, 0407-927-166.

We would also like to thank WCA for their generous donation allowing us to purchase a collapsible cutting/ironing table, with accessories. Happy crafting to all. Shirley, Ellen and Patricia.

COP’S CORNER Hello Readers, We start this issue of “Cops Corner” with a big thankyou to our local heroes!

On Thursday, 1st October 2020, Lancelin Police held an Emergency Services “Meet and Greet” Afternoon Tea. This event was attended by many volunteers and representatives from the St. John Ambulance, Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Bush Fire Brigade, Marine Search and Rescue, Shire of Gingin (Ranger Services) and Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (Fisheries). The event was a great opportunity to say a big thank you to our wonderful volunteers and allow our new Police team to introduce themselves. Once again, thank you for the amazing work you all do!

Unlicensed firearms seized in Gabbadah On Wednesday, 30th September 2020, Lancelin Police executed a search warrant at an address in Gabbadah, where it will be alleged they located and seized two unlicensed firearms and a large quantity of ammunition. A 52-year-old man will be appearing at the Joondalup Magistrates Court next month charged with possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Lancelin Police are detecting not only drink drivers, but drug impaired drivers. Unfortunately, we are still detecting persons drink driving within our Policing

District and in September alone, we charged three persons with drink driving offences, ranging from excess 0.05 to driving under the influence of alcohol. Further to this, we are also detecting drug impaired drivers and during the month of September, we charged two persons with offences relating to drug driving. Until next time, please take care on the roads and report any suspicious or illegal activity to Lancelin Police on 9650 1100 or 131 444 or through Crime

Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Don’t forget about the new phone application called ‘Eyes on the Street’ which you can use to report suspicious activity quickly and anonymously. You can even send photographs directly to the Police through the App. Kind Regards OIC – A/Sergeant Julian JENNINGS Lancelin Police Station

RED HATTERS (DEMURE DAMSELS)

What an awesome month we have had. It’s never too late to learn more. A most interesting tour of the Water Corp Groundwater Replenishment facility in Craigie where we learnt exactly what happens to all the waste water that goes through the sewerage. Later in the month 20 of us visited Shalom House in the Swan Valley, amazing work has been done for so many lives by initially one man. Mind blowing tour of the whole facility, very eye-opening and

somewhere that should be supported by both State and Federal Governments. November we will be visiting the Cheese Cathedral in Osborne Park as well as a Morning Melodies outing. Let me know if you would like to know about Red Hatting. Dianne Millar (0414-469-297)

LIONS HEARING CLINIC

About us: Lions Hearing Clinic will attend Woodridge for a screening day on 25th November (see notice opposite). Lions Hearing Clinic are a WA based hearing provider. We have 16 locations across WA with the closest to your community being Lancelin (monthly clinic) and Joondalup (full time clinic). We offer many hearing solutions including communication strategies, assistive listening devices, hearing aids and cochlear implants. We are not aligned with a brand of hearing aid and all our clinicians are commission free. We see government and private clients. Why check your hearing? Hearing impacts social, emotional, cognitive and physical health. Hearing keeps us connected with those around us. Hearing loss can be a gradual process and can sometimes go unnoticed by those experiencing it, but, it is very common. Hearing loss affects 1 in 6 Australians, increasing to 50% of those over 65 and 70% of those over 70. Check your hearing early with a free hearing screening. What are we offering? Free hearing screening. A hearing screening is a 20 min hearing check and can establish if a hearing loss is present (yes/no). If hearing loss is indicated, we will recommend patients follow up with a hearing assessment at one of our clinics - Lancelin or Joondalup most probably.

The Guilderton Bowling Club, had their opening day for the start of the new season. A fantastic morning of bowls, and a most enjoyable luncheon and refreshment after the games. The traditional "Spider" was exciting, everyone bowls to the jack and the closest to it is the winner, bowls were going every where. The lucky winner was Therese Hasting, with the raffle won by Ian Hasting. Now for the pennants. Good luck to all the players. Hope to see some support from around the town.

The Bowling club were hosts to the Winnacott Eagles ladies football club on Saturday. 17 of them had a wonderful time bowling and were treated to a scrumptious bbq with all the trimmings and refreshment and will be back. Next year. . GOOD LUCK GUILDERTON BRING HOME THE FLAG THIS YEAR

We have been busy completing hazard reduction burns this past month in preparation for the upcoming fire season. These burns will continue until the 15th of November and Sundays are always a safe bet for hanging out your washing. We believe the 20/21 fire season will be a challenging one so please use the coming month to prepare and plan for you and your home. Now is the time to assure your firebreaks are accessible and that your property is clear of fuel. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us. The new station has been coming along well which has created a sense of excitement for us all. Furniture has arrived this past month and we are one step closer to our grand opening. We give a big thank you to all the generous people who have donated funds and goods to the brigade and the new station. Welcome to our new volunteers Emily & Tom who have come on board and a thank you to our veterans for their continued commitment. We are always looking for new members so please call if you are interested in volunteering your time. We have now entered the restricted burning period and permits are available until the 15th of November through FCO Carolee Peace. Captain Carolee and Firefighters would like to once again thank the local community as it is your support that allows us to continue what we do. Emily Ledgard Secretary

Moore Clothes is a group of local residents working together

to help improve the lives of those in need or less fortunate

than us. The local volunteers enjoy giving and assisting

those in need, while also enjoying socialising with the more

isolated members in the community. "We have really enjoyed

the work and interaction we have with local residents and its

very satisfying hearing back from the groups we help." A

huge thank you from Moore Clothes is extended to everyone

who has volunteered in any aspect of the Moore Clothes Inc

organisation. "We have a tremendous amount of people who

come forwarded with offers of food, gifts and labour at our

fundraising events we organise throughout the year. These

could not be as successful as they are without your support."

Thank you also, to the ladies who help in the shop. "They

turn up week after week to do their tasks in a most

professional and enthusiastic manner. Our delivery drivers

who transport our surplus clothing to other charitable

organisations at their own expense throughout the

metropolitan area and lastly to our models who tirelessly give

their all at our Annual Fundraising fashion

parade." Donations are made by customers who come into

the outlet and purchase secondhand clothing which is

displayed on the racks. There are no set prices for this

clothing other than a gold coin donation only.

SOVEREIGN HILL GARDEN CLUB

This month we visited Wootra’s Asparagus Farm in Wells Glover Road in lieu of our monthly meeting, which just happened to fall on the day of the Moore Clothes Fashion Parade.

Colleen and Peter met us at the gate and as it was drizzling with rain we all went up to the house for a morning tea of scrumptious asparagus muffins. While we were there Peter filled us in on “the dos and don’ts” of growing asparagus and also gave us a rundown on the history of their farm. Asparagus is a very interesting plant – do you know that it can survive for up to 50 years with tender loving care.

After inspecting the asparagus beds, tasting some freshly picked asparagus and purchasing some produce from their “Asparvan” we headed to Bindoon for lunch at the Backhaus. It was then on to the Local Produce Store and with everyone well stocked with fresh vegetables it was a leisurely drive back home. We were lucky to see numerous varieties of wildflowers along the sides of the road including Kangaroo Paws and Cats Paws.

Our November meeting will see us creating our own recycled paper sheets embedded with seeds and making seed tapes. If you want any further information on the Sovereign Hill Garden Club contact Wendy on 0429938232.

With the warmer weather approaching, the tourist and visitors to our area are increasing. The Visitors Centre re-

opened its doors at the beginning of the October School holidays and since then it has seen numerous visitors through its doors. We are in need of more community minded members to help out on our roster. The more people we have the less strain it is on people’s time. If you would like to help, please contact Linda for 0414631273 for more details. Further information on the Guilderton Visitors Centre can be found on our website www.guildertonwa.com.au Wendy

MOORE MEN’S

SHED

The day has come and gone, the Shed is Officially Opened and we have a fabulous addition to our current complex. This is a fully lined, insulated shed for use as a lunch room, relaxing room, meeting room, tea-room, games room, just fabulous, so now we can sit and meet out of the weather and hopefully away from the flies?

Shane Love, MLA for Moore, officially cut the ribbon and opened our new addition. Some thirty plus members, wives and local community members attended to witness the Official Opening. It was a Grand Event with all ‘tucking into’ the food as supplied by Members wives and ably set up by Kim Smith and Wendy Nottle, with Pam Winn keeping the hot food hot.

Linda Balcombe and Stephen Fidge presented the Bendigo Bank Grant of $11,000, which was really appreciated, for without their support there would be no New Shed. We also recognise the Grant from Lotterywest for $20,000, their contribution helped it all to happen.

We also have to recognise the contribution Moore Men’s Shed members made in building this Shed and particular accolades go to Siggy Naussedat for his efforts to Insulate and Line the Shed, a great effort and very much appreciated.

Our Sausage Sizzle day at Bunning’s Clarkson is set down for 31st October and our OPEN DAY is Saturday 14th November, join in the Fun Day and sample a Free Hot Dog. There will be plenty of items to see/purchase, such as Books, Clothes, Plants and Toys, plus walk through our new addition. Meet the Men who Make the Goods and don’t forget Christmas is less than 60 days away, so here’s an opportunity to get a great Christmas gift.

Look forward to seeing you at our Open Day

GUILDERTON GOLF CLUB

NEWS

The Guilderton Golf Club held its yearly

fundraising stall on Saturday the 26th of September. This

stall (traditionally the Easter Stall) was in the new time

slot due to the impact of Covid-19. The small band of

members presented Guilderton locals and visitors for

the long weekend with a vast array of cakes, jams, local

honey, and fresh vegetables. The traditional sausage

sizzle proved as popular as ever and an incredible

selection of bric-a-brac kept adults and especially

children searching for loose change. Tea and coffee and

Devonshire scones, and several magnificent raffles

rounded out the offerings. Despite the crowd being

significantly smaller than the Easter numbers the club

raised a nice sum to help offset recent costs associated

with the bores and reticulation system.

Footgolf and visitors playing casual rounds of golf have

continued to be very popular and is great to see the

course being enjoyed by all the visitors.

The results for the last month’s golf are:

Sunday 27th September

Winner Rochelle Keogh 37, Runner-up Stuart Morris 37

Saturday 3rd October

Winner Abe Wright 40, Runner-up Allan Wetherly 32

Saturday 10th October

Winner Lynn Malone 41, Runner-up Stuart Morris 38

RECYCLING - CARING FOR OUR

PLANET Well isn't is great that Containers for Change has finally happened and we have our own drop off point right here in Woodridge. It is at the entrance off WoollyBush Loop in the caravan

turning area. The team is Eco Exchange and they are there every Saturday 9am - 5pm For any information click on the following links:

http://containersforchange.com.au/ [email protected] Byron from Eco always happy to answer any queries on 0404-068-821 or 9655 2112 Keep up to date on their Facebook Page - Eco Exchange Keep up with the Red Cycling - Woolies & Coles are the drop off points We have to be continually aware of recycling, take the time to read websites that give some great information. Educate your children, it is their future that needs to be cleaner and encourage them to pick up litter. I have noticed now that we can get 10c for containers, the kids are very enthusiastic about recycling; we all can do better. Don't forget when you're at the beach, pick up at least 3 pieces of plastic/rubbish etc, if not more, every bit helps the environment. Jenny Walker - Caring for our planet.

The Anti-Raffle - An unusual and fun way to raise

money - This is a simple but fun idea that subverts the

usual raffle idea. Instead of having a great prize that

everyone wants to win, you have an embarrassing prize

that no one wants. Everyone is given a free raffle ticket

as a condition of entry for another event, such as a quiz

or bingo night. To make as much money as possible,

you should have multiple ‘prizes’. The idea is that if

someone’s number is drawn, they can pay money to

NOT win the prize. The prize is then drawn again, and

hopefully someone else will pay to NOT win the prize.

You can set an amount the winner would pay to give

the prize back – it might be $5 or $10 depending on

your community.
