Welcome to Lloydminster! As Canada’s only Border

City, we’re proud to showcase the best in agriculture,

oil and gas, entrepreneurism, and community spirit.

Straddling the Fourth Meridian, the border markers

symbolize our duality of province and singularity of

mindset, that together, we’re stronger.

wE’LL caLL IT LLOYDMINSTER

A Little Lesson in HistoryIn April 1903 the Barr Colonists arrived from England, settling in what is now known as the Lloydminster area. Reverend George Exton Lloyd, a brave and strong leader, was honoured with the naming of the new settlement using his surname. History tells us the word ‘minster’ (not to be confused with minister) was added to pay respect to their mother church. Thus, Lloydminster was born.

ThE fOuRTh MERIDIaN

Two Provinces Come TogetherIn 1905 the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan were created, and the Fourth Meridian was declared the dividing line between them. Previously, the Fourth Meridian was considered part of what was originally named the Northwest Territories. This created a conundrum for the settlement of Lloydminster, as the dividing line literally ran right through! Lloydminster, Alberta was incorporated as a village in July 1906, and Lloydminster, Saskatchewan as a town in April 1907.

MaSSIvE chaNgE afOOT

THe GreAT Fire oF 1929History books tell the story of the Great Fire of 1929, a destructive force razing nearly everything in its path. As in many settlements, life in Lloydminster was centered around the town square. This included several businesses, churches, and the post office. The Lloydminster Regional Archives have several photographs of the downtown core before and after the Great Fire, showcasing the truly devastating damage sustained. Co-operation, hard work, and determination rebuilt Lloydminster after the Great Fire, this time amalgamated under one municipality as the town of Lloydminster on May 20, 1930.

ThE BORDER MaRkERS

Where Alberta and Saskatchewan MeetNo doubt you’ve seen the towering orange border markers running along the Fourth Meridian, they’re the largest in the world! Symbolically representing oil and gas, agriculture, the Barr Colonists (our founders), and First Nation and Metis. They pay homage to past, present and future. If you get up close, you’ll notice each steel border marker has a gap between each monument. This gap symbolizes the actual border. Their shape is deliberate, designed to mimic the original stakes used to survey the provincial border of Alberta and Saskatchewan back in 1905.

Of course, you must seize the opportunity to stand in two provinces at once – it’s a thrill!

The border makes a significant impact on government, commerce, geography, and more. Of special note, the following are examples of what it means to live in Lloydminster (Alberta side or Saskatchewan side):

• Provincial Sales Tax (PST) is not paid at businesses on either side of the border. This allows all businesses, regardless of which side of the border they operate, to remain competitive in the marketplace.

• Vehicle insurance providers, rates, and licensing information are different depending upon which province you reside in.

• Daylight Savings Time (DST) does not mark a change for the two provinces contained in Lloydminster city proper. The entire city operates on Alberta time, which means those residing on the Saskatchewan side of the city are on the same time as their neighbours in Alberta. Additionally, some smaller towns in Saskatchewan within driving distance of Lloydminster have opted to follow suit.

• Liquor regulations, permits, and violations vary depending upon which side of the border you’re on. Local RCMP have jurisdiction across Lloydminster city proper (both sides of the border), and they enforce provincial regulation to the letter. Legal drinking age is also affected, and such establishments exist in both Lloydminster, Alberta (legal drinking age of 18) and Lloydminster, Saskatchewan (legal drinking age of 19).

OPEN fOR BuSINESS

An entrepreneur’s ParadiseLloydminster is the largest centre between Edmonton, Alberta, and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Located on the border, its unique geographical location, young demographics, and range of offerings cement it as a choice shopping destination for those living in communities around the area. These assets, and more, make it an entrepreneur’s paradise.

OIL & gaS

Powering the MassesHistory tells the tale of an area farmer who suspected, then confirmed, the presence of oil in the area. As the story goes, in 1919 local farmer Charlie Marren discovered water for a well. When he brought his cattle over to drink, they turned away and refused. His suspicions told him oil was present, so to be sure, he sent water samples away to be tested. The rest, as they say, is history. Despite the slowing of prices across global markets, Lloydminster stands proudly as the Heavy Oil Capital of Canada. Companies such as Husky Energy (owner of the Bi-Provincial Upgrader), Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL), and more are major employers in the area. There are also a number of entrepreneurs who have learned from the giants who went before them, specializing in the areas of manufacturing, servicing, drilling and production of oil and gas.

If you’re new to the area, you may have heard

Lloydminster mentioned as a hub for entrepreneurs.

Consistently ranking on the Canadian Federation of

Independent Business (CFIB) listings, Lloydminster’s

unique border position, expansive surrounding area,

and steady industry make it an ideal location to set up

shop. Although the global slowing of oil and gas has

certainly affected business in Lloydminster and area,

the diversity of big business including agriculture,

retail, and other services has provided sure footing for

the city to continue to thrive.

The Prairie’s Food BasketLloydminster has deep agricultural roots, as innumerable founding families toiled in the soil over 100 years ago. Today’s offerings include grain, oil seeds, beef, pork, specialized livestock, and dairy. The region is rich in resources, and has high production numbers. Lloydminster is the second-largest producer of alfalfa, and third largest producer or barley, oats and mixed grains. Considering cattle, nearly 10% of all cattle raised in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan are raised within a 160-kilometre radius of Lloydminster.
