WASHINGTON, June 18,2008 (AP): Most of the Con-gressional Hispanic Caucus,including several fromTexas, have shifted their sup-port from Hillary RodhamClinton to Barack Obama andare vowing to help Demo-crats win the Latino vote.

Obama met with the cau-cus Tuesday evening in whatattendees said was a cordialmeeting and the first timemany had met or had anysignificant discussion withObama. Only one femaleLatina congressional mem-ber attended.

All Texas Latina caucusmembers attended the pri-vate meeting. Rep. CharlieGonzález, D-San Antonio, isthe only Texas Latino whohas backed Obama from thebeginning, but the rest havesince joined on.

The majority of Latinovoters favored Clinton overObama during the Demo-cratic primary season.

“I told him I worked myheart out against you and I’mready to work for you now,”Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Clintonbacker, said after the meeting.

Along with González andCuellar, other caucus mem-bers from Texas are: RubenHinojosa, D-Mercedes;Solomon Ortiz, D-CorpusChristi and Silvestre Reyes,D-El Paso.

Reyes also said Ortizurged Obama to visit Texaseven though the state is not abattleground state in the fallelection. Ortiz, who wasn’tavailable to comment afterthe meeting, said Obama ap-pearances could help Latinocandidates like Rick Noriega,who is challenging incum-bent Republican Sen. JohnCornyn, R-Texas.

“We (Hispanics) were sostrongly for Hillary Clintonand understood her propos-als and when you comparethose to Barack Obama, thenhow can you vote forMcCain?” he said.

There are 21 members ofthe Congressional HispanicCaucus. It is open to all par-ties, but all of its membersare Democrats.

Linda Sánchez, D-Calif.,an early Obama backer, wasthe only Latina who attendedthe meeting.

SYLVAN LAKE,June 22, 2008 (AP): Agrowing number ofolder drivers are goingback to driver educationto learn skills that helpthem compensate forfading eyesight andhearing and longer re-action times.

The Traffic Improve-ment Association in Syl-van Lake is one of sev-eral groups offeringsuch classes. So do AAAand the AARP.

TIA, which started itsworkshops in 1989, of-fers 25 classes a yearthroughout Michigan,up from 10 a decadeago.

Michigan’s 65-and-older population is ris-ing. In 2000, it was 1.2million, or 12 percentof the state’s 10 millionresidents, according tothe U.S. Census Bureau.

In 2030, it is projected toreach 2 million.

“Our roads were de-signed for an average-agedriver in their 40s,” high-way safety engineer Kim-berly Lariviere told theDetroit Free Press. “Soon,the average driver will bein the 60s.”

Four years ago, the stateDepartment of Transpor-tation started replacingroad signs with larger onesmade with brighter reflec-tive material and morereadable lettering to aidolder drivers.

In the past two years,Michigan also has wid-ened road stripes by twoinches, increased the di-ameter of traffic lights andreengineered some inter-sections by making leftturn lanes wider and add-ing more roundabouts.
