State Parks Day

celebrated at Hughes

House SIXES - Spinners and weav-ers, wood carvers and pos-sibly other artisans will demonstrate their period appropriate crafts Saturday, June 1, at Historic Hughes House. Refreshments will be served throughout the 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. tour day. Every state park in Oregon offers free camping on this one day each year. The events at Hughes House are made possible by the Cape Blanco Heritage Soci-ety. Tours are also avail-able at Cape Blanco Light Station and the Port Orford Lifeboat Station Museum. All three sites, open every day but Tuesday through October, are presented co-operatively with Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department.

BANDON - “First, we eat. Then we do everything else.” So wrote M.F.K. Fisher, who comes to life in The Gaels Readers Theater presentation of "I Was Really Very Hungry," opening May 31 for a three-show run. Considered one of the 20th century’s greatest writers, Fisher is unfortunately little known by most modern read-ers. Fisher authored more than two dozen books and hundreds of articles, reviews and essays for prestigious magazines during her six-decade career. This play adaptation by Kelly Nespor draws from many of her auto-biographical writings. While often categorized as a food writer, her insights went much deeper, infusing her work with humor, pain and raw honesty. “Meeting M.F.K. Fisher in print began for me a love affair that soon became a passion, and then an obses-sion.” said Donald Zealand of The Gaels. “She, along with the remarkable Julia

Child and Alice Waters, changed the way Americans understood not only the art of eating, but also the art of liv-ing.” Zealand first directed the readers theater play for the Bandon Playhouse in 2016. “It was the show that created The Gaels and we’re bring-ing it back to give our new audience a chance to see it,” Zealand said. Long-time Bandon resident and actress Corrie Gant por-trays M.F.K. Fisher, with Amy Moss Strong, Annie McGregor, Richard Robinett and Donald Zealand com-pleting the cast. "I Was Really Very Hungry" will be per-formed in the Sprague Room of the Bandon Public Library for three performances only – at 7 p.m. Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 2. Seating is limited but can be reserved ahead by emailing [email protected] and requesting date and num-ber of seats. Tickets are $5 each at the door.

Jazzy sounds of Halie Loren coming to Sprague BANDON — Bandon Showcase presents the award-winning jazz singer/songwriter Halie Lo-ren at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 7, at the Sprague Community Theater, 1202 11th St. SW. Loren's performance was postponed from Feb-ruary after smoke damage at the Sprague. Tick-ets purchased then will be honored for this show. Raised in Alaska, Loren, an Oregon-based artist, brings a fresh and original perspective to time-honored musical paths, channeling her innate understanding of connectedness across musical boundaries to forge bonds with diverse audi-ences. Loren's warm and seductive voice works its magic on the "old school" of Gershwins, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, and offers original composi-tions - the "new cool" of jazz. She unifies each piece with a rhythmic pulse, unique phrasing

and the subtlety of a slight vibrato on note end-ings. She’s released eight albums to date, garnering several national and international awards as well as significant critical and chart success along the way. Along with recording success, Loren’s live perfor-mances have expanded to include performances with the Jazz Orchestra of Sicily, the Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra in Oregon, the Mon-roe Symphony in Louisiana and the prestigious International Britt Fest Orchestra. Tickets cost $25 each, reserved seating, and are available at Bandon Mercantile, 541-347-4341, at bandonshowcase.org or at the door. Intermis-sion complimentary desserts and beverages are provided by Coastal Mist Chocolates and Edge-waters restaurant.

Brush pickup starts June 3 BANDON - The next brush and yard debris removal event of 2019 will start on Monday, June 3. Bandon Disposal will be picking up piles of brush and yard debris. City residents are allowed up to a maximum of 5 cubic yards of brush and yard debris (approximately two pickup loads) at no cost. Simply place your brush and yard debris in the right-of-way alongside the street adjacent to your house prior to Monday, June 3, and Bandon Dis-posal will pick it up. It make take a week or longer for the brush piles to be picked up throughout town, but those who feel they were missed can contact Bandon Disposal at 541-347-9633. Make sure the brush is in one pile, since there is a maxi-mum of one pile per address, and no group piles. Keep in mind that this program is for woody yard debris such as branches, brush, gorse, etc. Other items and materials such as

metals, appliances, furniture, etc. will not be accepted. Branches must be cut into lengths no longer than 5 feet. Grass clippings and leaves will also be picked up, provided they are placed in biodegradable paper bags. No plastic bags can be accepted. Avoid placing the pile under overhead utility lines or over-hanging trees, since a boom truck is used to pick up the debris. Locate the pile away from fire hydrants and utility boxes, and do not impede sidewalks or pedestrian walkways. A total of three brush and yard debris re-moval events are held each year. This is the second event for 2019. This year they are scheduled for January, June, and October. For those with more than 5 cubic yards of debris, or who want debris picked up at times other than the three brush removal weeks, contact Bandon Disposal at 541-347-9633 for a price quote.
