As the 40th-anniversary year ofhis seminal album “Piano Man” draws to aclose, the singer-songwriter of numeroushits of wide-ranging styles is among thosesaluted for his contributions to the perform-ing arts as CBS airs the 36th annual specialSunday, Dec. 29.“I was surprised,” six-time Grammy

winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in-ductee Joel recalls. “I honestly, reallythought there were a lot of people who weredeserving before I was going to get this ...jazz musicians, classical musicians, justother people. I’ve had so much fun, it’s likeI’m getting an award for doing something Ilove. Which is an award in itself.”Taped Dec. 8 in Washington, D.C., the

“NOTHING IS coincidence, it is all fate.”- Mehmet Murat ildan.IT is rare that a philanthropic event melds,

by chance, with the release of a popular Hol-lywood film, but this is one of those raretimes.We know about the critical success of

Matthew McConaughey in the movie “TheDallas Buyers Club” - and of this actor’s as-tonishing “comeback.” At first he was justanother pretty male face. Then he was a kindof perpetually stripped-to-the-waist, running-on-the-beach, laid-back semi has-been. Andthen he redeemed himself as an actor inmovies such as “Killer Joe,” “Mud” and“Magic Mike.”“The Dallas Buyers Club” is set in the ‘80s.

It tells of lowlife, hard-living heterosexual(McConaughey) who had always been dis-dainful of homosexuals. Until he discovershe has AIDS - this at the apex of the fatal cri-sis when diagnosis meant certain death. Heis suddenly catapulted into a new awarenessthat those around him dying by the dozensare the same gays and transsexuals he oncedespised. Only now, because of promiscu-ous, unprotected sex, he finds himself in thesame boat.Drugs that the medical community had not

yet approved were the only lifeline at thetime, so people died by the hundreds withhelp “on the way.” Matthew’s real-life char-acter became the model for a new way tosave lives - illegally. And he made a livingdoing just that.He preserved his own existence and fi-

nanced the saving of others by dealing inthese drugs and questioning the medical es-tablishment. (McConaughey lost a lot ofweight to play this role. That and his raw per-formance have been critically acclaimed. Hisco-star, Jared Leto, has been equally hailedin the role of a gay transvestite.)McConaughey’s lowlife schemer went on

selling illegal, life-saving, unapproved drugsin Dallas and environs. More or less, hemade history, manifest in this bold movie. AROUND THIS time - the early 1980s -

in Manhattan, a lovely woman named JudyPeabody, from the distinct upper crust, beganher own private fight for AIDS sufferers,physically nursing many of them and en-couraging and spending time with the dying.She reconciled desperate, ashamed parentswith their suffering children and consoledheartbroken partners. She co-facilitated acare partners group called the Gay Men’sHealth Crisis and raised a tremendousamount of money by enlisting help for theNew York Presbyterian’s benefit, the Fete deFamille, at Mortimer’s restaurant. (Many stillrecall that era - a terrible time in which eventhe most sophisticated and liberal people inthe upper echelons were so fearful of AIDSthat they shunned their gay friends, aban-doned their hairdressers and decorators andeschewed kissing, even socially.)

Later, in 1984, Dr. Mathilde Krim and Eliz-abeth Taylor founded AmfAR, eventuallybringing in stars such as Sharon Stone,Madonna and Kenneth Cole, raising legalmoney. I was one of the earliest board mem-bers. AmfAR was and is a valiant, valuableorganization, but at the time it was late al-ready.DESPITE substantial fundraising, Judy

Peabody kept inserting herself physicallyinto the scene. She was tireless.Now a dedicated group has opened a Well-

ness Center at 53 W. 23rd Street and theyhave wisely named it after Judith Peabody,who died more than three years ago.Many who are ill with AIDS and other dis-

eases don’t yet know about the WellnessCenter, which opened its doors and manyhearts in downtown Manhattan. Judy’s hus-band, Sam, and their daughter, Elizabeth, areprime movers behind the Wellness Center.At the recent official opening, Sam made awonderful speech about his happy marriageto Judy and how gratified she would be toknow of this new happening. (As for AIDS,there are now 30 drugs available to combatthe disease. The Center also offers help forother chronic diseases.)The Center, which is staffed with profes-

sionals and volunteers seeking promisingnew therapies for those without hope, is lo-cated in a beautifully designed complex andnamed for a terrific, one-of-a-kind woman.Dr. Jonathan Jacobs of New York Presbyte-rian made a great speech at the opening ofthe Wellness Center.Dr. Jacobs deplored the reality that is

poverty, substance abuse, mental illness andthe inadequacies of the current health sys-tem. He noted that if one is African-Ameri-can and gay, he still has a 30 percent chanceof AIDS infection. That is much higher thanin Nigeria where they have a sister clinic.Many women, victims of domestic violence,are finding succor in the Wellness Center.The Center tries to track the sick and thenact, not just write a prescription.I am sorry I’ve been so long in writing

about this opening and the terrific party ofhelping hands it generated. Why not go thereand see if you want to volunteer your serv-ices, time and money, as Judy Peabody didin her amazing, but all-too-short life!

Home Depot Foundation Gives BEOF Grantfor Bayonne Veterans

Mayor Mark A. Smith announced that The Home Depot Foundation hasawarded the Bayonne Economic Opportunity Foundation (BEOF) a $5,000grant to help economically disadvantaged veterans in Bayonne. The grantwill be used to purchase goods and equipment needed for small home re-pairs for Bayonne veterans over the age of 60. Mayor Smith said, “Thisgrant is great news for Bayonne’s veterans. Several residents who servedour country will be able to fix up their homes, thanks to this grant. I wouldlike to thank The Home Depot Foundation for its generosity to the veteransof our community. I would also like to thank BEOF Executive DirectorAna Quintela and Millennium Strategies, Bayonne’s grant consultants, fortheir successful efforts at obtaining this funding.”

The BEOF currently provides small home repairs through its SeniorResidential Maintenance Program. According to Ms. Quintela, the demandfor these repair services is greater than the agency’s existing resources canmeet. As a result of this unmet need, the BEOF worked with MillenniumStrategies to obtain the grant for veterans’ home repairs from The HomeDepot Foundation. Quintela said, “I would like to thank The Home DepotFoundation for enabling the BEOF to expand the reach of our services.Several veterans in Bayonne will have safer, more efficient homes as a re-sult of The Home Depot Foundation’s support.” Repairs covered by the

BEOF include, but may not be limited to, re-placement or installation of smoke and carbonmonoxide detectors; window repair/caulking;weather stripping for drafty windows and doors;purchase of shower chairs; installation of hallwaybanisters for safety; and the purchase and instal-lation of fire extinguishers.

The home improvements will be performedby licensed contractors and weatherization pro-fessionals. Veterans will be identified throughthe current application process. An outreachmailing will be sent to Bayonne residents over the age of 60 who receiveveterans’ benefits, offering them a free evaluation of their homes.

Explaining the need for the grant, Quintela said, “Many senior citizensare unable to afford home repairs. Many of these repairs can either providea long-term cost savings by lowering energy costs, or can prevent injury oreven death to some of our community’s most vulnerable citizens. Veteransshould not have to decide between paying their electrical bills and pur-chasing fire extinguishers.”

On “Bakery Boss,” the Monday TLC series currently in its first season,Buddy Valastro tries to rescue bakeries teetering on the brink of disaster,but sometimes that means helping the owners in spite of themselves.

“It’s funny, but think about it: At the end of the day, does anybodyreally like to hear what is wrong with them? If I came into your officeand said, ‘You’re not doing this right; you need to do it this way,’ after awhile you’d be thinking, ‘I really want to kill this guy,’ ” Valastro says.“Realistically, though, I have to look at the situation as an outsider andtry to figure out what is really going wrong. Whether you like me or notis irrelevant.”

In many cases, lack of organization rears its head with the strugglingbusinesses, but Valastro says he’s encountered a host of other problemsas well.

“There was the 100-year-old bakery that just didn’t want to changeand adapt to the times, and you had people who had made good cup-cakes for bake sales and thought they could just quit their job, take outa triple mortgage on their home and open a bakery,” he says. “The spec-trum of problems is so wide it’s not even funny. A lot of them, believe itor not, were buying a lot of baked goods from other vendors and thentrying to resell them. Basically, they were buying crap and not getting agood profit margin on it. I was like, ‘Come on, make it here, fromscratch, the old-fashioned way.’ ”

Valastro says he’s been wanting to do a show like ‘Bakery Boss” forabout three years, but his commitments to other shows – including thehit series “Cake Boss,” which returns for a new TLC season on Monday,Dec. 30 – made that impossible.Did you get yet any requests from bakeries that were too far

gone to save?“Unfortunately, yeah. We had an overwhelming response, and we found the

ones that we thought we could help, but some of them were dealing with eco-nomic factors or were just too far gone to be savable.”What can “Cake Boss” fans look forward to in this new season?“You’ll be seeing the struggle of me trying to grow my bakeries and opening

more. You see us trying to make a 15-foot alligator cake with a mouth that opens.There are some fun pranks and good stuff coming up and some more news about

my mom and her health. Thank God, she’s doing a little better.”What are your favorite holiday decorations?“The ones my children made in school. I still remember the

very first ornament my daughter Sofia made, and how proudI was of it. We still put it on the tree every year.”Are you making any New Year’s resolutions?“I always just try to be a better person every year, and I’ll
