“Smokey Eyes”

Smokey Eyes is a composite of only two images. The first image was taken of my cat Kikyo and was shot at F2.8 on my Sigma 70-200mm lens at 118mm using ISO 100 at 1/200 sec. She was sitting outside looking inside through a doorway and I lay down on the floor so I was at her eye level. Out of 24 images, this was the one where she was looking directly at me, and her eyes had the right expression. The 2nd image was taken with a Canon 50mm lens at F1.8 with a 1/20 sec shutter speed while the camera was on a tripod and used with a remote trigger. The smoke was illuminated by using two speed lights. One was on camera and was only acting as a trigger. The other was to the right of frame and had a “make-shift” snoot (a soft tablet case wrapped around the flash with a rubber band) to direct the light just into the path of the smoke. The images were colour corrected and processed in Lightroom and then exported as layers to Photoshop where I then used the masking tools to mask out the eyes and move them into place. The first image was shot back in August, but the 2nd image was shot on the Tuesday and the editing was done on the Wednesday the competition was due. It was a rushed job, but I’m very happy with the result.

October has been a busy month at the club with three practical

nights, firstly at Beauty Park where members practiced capture of our expert light twirlers, Steve, Eugene and Mick with the many coloured light sets provided, all good fun and should be lots of interesting photos in the next Open Comps.

Likewise, a photoshoot on the Frankston Foreshore had many of us capturing a lovely model plus a fire twirler who provided many opportunities to capture various light painting and action shots.

Week 4 of the month a great night at the club rooms with an Alien Bridal group photoshoot and static displays provided yet again opportunity to test our camera skills.

Many thanks to Greg Desiatov, Frank Sartori and many helpers for their assistance with the models and photographers on the night.

Big thanks to Steve for organising these events.

The other big news at the club is the search for new rooms in 2019.To date a number of enquiries have been lodged with council, local halls and schools. We are shortlisting the best and will advise as we go forward. When the time does come to move, we will need a number of volunteers, trailers and cars to help relocate our equipment, a call will go out when that time comes.Thank you.

Frankston Photographic Club Inc.Notice to all members of the Annual General Meeting

The Club Committee wish to advise that the 2018 AGM has been planned for the evening of the 21st November commencing at 7.00PM. We would like all members to attend this meeting prior to our

normal club event planned for that night. At the AGM all committee positions are vacated allowing any member to nominate for aposition. Nomination Forms can be obtained at the Front Desk any club night during August and September or you can approach Peter Kewley, President or Bob Date Secretary by email or at the club to discuss what is required to be a Committee Member.

Bob Date Secretary FPC. ¤

Phillip Island GetawayThis month, from Sun-

day18th-Wednesday 21st Novem-ber, we have organised a photog-raphy getaway to Phillip Island. We will be based at the Beach Park Caravan Park (some have private accomodation), and have lots of locations and activities planned, including The Pinnacles, Shear-waters returning to nests at dusk, Woolamai Beach surfing, Cadillac Canyon and Panhandle Flats at San Remo, The Nobbies, Kitty Miller Bay and the SS Speke, Churchill Island, Seagull rookery, dawn overlook-ing Newhaven Yacht Club and lots more. We will be finishing up by about midday on Wednesday 21st so plenty of time to get back for the AGM that evening.

Obviously not everyone will want to do the same thing, so I have programmed a number sug-gested locations for dawn and

dusk, but left a lot of free time through the day. If members intend to participate in the sunset shoots meal times will be short so I would suggest snacks in the evening and then get together for lunch during the day. Jan Jones is looking into some restaurants and cafes.

All club members are welcome to attend, either for the three nights or for a day or so. Partners are also welcome. I will directly email all those who have indicated that they are attending during the week prior to the event, so make sure that you contact me to let me know if you are attending. The number for the Beach Park Caravan Park is (03) 59522113.

Note that there will be no Day Group Meeting this month.

Membership Fees 1 July 2018 to 30 June 2019

The Frankston Photographic Club has held membership fees at the current levels for the last three years. With increasing rent costs and maintenance of equipment required to ensure we can provide the best service to members there will be a slight increase in fees for the coming year. MEMBERSHIP FEES 2018/2019 1 General Full membership $65 2 Discounted Pension rate.

Note: this is only available for a full or disability pension on production of pension card and number. Seniors Card only is not eligible.

$55

3 Family membership $110 or $55 per family member, 2 per Family

4 Junior rate, 16 and under $30 In addition to the general rates members are requested to contribute $2 each night when attending the club meetings, this assists us in covering our insurance and rent costs. It is also mandatory that all members attending club meetings sign the attendance book as a record of occupancy required under our insurance and rental agreements with the building owners. Overall our club fees are low compared to other organisations, we are one of the few clubs that meets every week plus we also run courses on weekends and an Advanced Group, the Day Group is largely self-supporting through their attendance charge however regardless of attendance we still pay rental and additional costs for that group. Maintaining the club’s equipment, the printing service and ensuring that we are focused on providing the best conditions for our members is a priority. Your membership fees enable us, to continue to do that. Peter Kewley AFIAP, FAPS President
