B enjam in F rank lin was the first, and rem ains the greatest, genius bo rn in the New World. Like Leonardo da Vinci, genius of the Old W orld, F rankfin had an inquiring m ind, tru ly majestic in scope, tha t gave the world a wealth of practical ideas which in very great measure advanced civilization. H e was A m erica’s first great world figure.
F ran k lin was the G odfather of the United States, having w ritten the “Albany P lan of U nion” in 1754.
As elder statesman his advice was constantly being sought by W ashington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison and others in the United States. His judgem ent was sound and prevailed in m any crises. Twenty six years o lder th an George W ashington, he lived only a year after the inaugura t ion of the first president in 1789, to the ripe old age of eighty-four. Every year of his life was fru itfu l w ith accomplishments.
Publisher, scholar, educator, citizen, soldier, inventor, scientist, p h i losopher, business m an, d iplom at and politician, statesman, super-salesm an, patrio t, m an of God and m em ber of the hum an race who loved his fellow m an. All of these were areas in which the au tho r of “Poor R ich a rd ’s A lm anac” excelled. In the words of P h ilip Freneau, an early A m erican prin ter-poet:
“ W hen m onarchs tum ble to the ground, successors are easily found: But, matchless F rank lin ! \^ h a t a few can hope to rival such as you, W ho seiz’d from kings th e ir sceptered pride,A nd tu rn ed the ligh tn ing’s darts aside.”
On this 250th anniversary of the b ir th of B enjam in F rank lin , we, the class of 1956 would like to dedicate our yearbook to this great A m erican, a fter whom our school is named.

F ond memories, dear friends we love,
A nd countless moments study-spent
Remain; to us, a shining hour
Effaced not by cruel dissent.
e leave it now, this cloistered life;
Ensuing epochs hear our tread,
Loathe yet to leave these well-known halls, where
Lasting goals and dreams were bred.

The Journalism Club of 1956 carried on a long trad ition and this year produced, under the guidance of Mrs. E lizabeth Youm an, one of the finest volumes of the F rank lin Press in the school’s history.
Establishing another F rank lin First, the Debating Club, u nde r the T H E leadership of Mr. R. J. E lliott, proved th a t they m eant business by pre-
T TT» senting an Assembly about B enjam in F ranklin . Invited to partic ipa te inJ J E J j A i I J N l j r v j J-j U i 5 two tournam ents, they declined for they felt as this was th e ir first year,
they were unprepared . Next year they will compete.

An old favorite, tlie C urrent Events Club, under the auspices of Mr. S. King held lively discussions on curren t world problems, every Monday.
T he perenially popu lar Science Club was the largest club in F rank lin T H Ethis year. Including a trip to the Brookhaven National Laboratories in r i / ^ T T ^ i v T / ^ T ^ t t

U nder the new coach, Mr. Davis, the baseball team had a lot of spirit, b u t not m uch winning ability. A fter defeating Bedford P a rk Academy, the team slumped and never quite m anaged to win ano ther game.

W ith an unusual season—no wins and all losses— the team still managed to keep fighting up to the end. W ith m any of the mem bers back next year, we have great hopes for the future.

T he best team of the year— according to winnings. Defeating most of the ir opponents the boys went happily th rough a great season. They owe Mr. Davis an especial vote of thanks for his help.
T E N N I S T E A M
Playing a lesser im portan t role in the F rank lin sports program , the Tennis Team had a good season. W inning th ree out of five matches, most of the m em bers will be back next year for an even be tte r season.
