TheMostHolyNameofJesushasalwaysbeenhonoredandveneratedintheChurchfromtheearliesttimes,butonlyinthe15thcenturywastherealiturgicalcult.St.BernardineofSiena,aidedbyotherFranciscans,especiallyBl.AlbertofSarteanoandBl.BernardineofFeltre,veryzealouslyandferventlydiffuseddevotiontotheHolyNamethroughoutthewholeofEurope,untilitwasfinally established as a liturgical feast. In 1530,ClementVII authorized theFranciscanOrder tocelebrate thedivineofficeof theMostHolyNameofJesus.Althoughthefeastneverdisappeared from theCommonFranciscanCalendar, itwas removed from theGeneralRomanCalendarin1970.PopeJohnPaulIIrestoredthefeasttotheGeneralCalendar,withtherankofOptionalMemorial,whenherevisedtheRomanMissal in2002.ForFranciscans, the textsareproperFranciscantexts,andthefeastenjoystherankofMemorial.

Amongthecountlessvictimsof thereligiouspersecutionthat tookplaceduringtheFrenchRevolution,championsofthefaithandCatholicpriesthood,weremembersoftheFranciscanFam-ily.TheConventualfriar,JohnBaptistTriquerie,wasoneofthevictimsofthatpersecutionandwasmartyredonJanuary21,1794.Hewasamongthe“MartyrsofSeptember”,whichincluded191bishop,priests,deaconsandastudent,beatifiedbyPiusXIonOctober17,1926.Formerly,hisfeastwascelebratedwiththeotherFranciscanmartyrsoftheFrenchRevolutiononSeptember2.

MarianneKoobwasbornonJanuary23,1838,inDarmstadt,Germany.In1862sheenteredtheSistersofSt.FrancisofSyracuse,NewYork,afterhavingpostponedherentrancenineyearsinordertofulfillfamilyobligations.Shewasinstrumentalinthefoundingofseveralschoolsandhospitalsforimmigrants.In1883,sheledagroupofSisterstotheHawaiianIslandstocareforthepoor,especiallythosesufferingfromleprosy.In1888shewenttoKalaupapa,Moloka’i,wheresheestablishedaleprosarium.AfterthedeathofSt.DamienDeVeuster,shetookoverthehomehebuiltforboys.ShediedonAugust9,1918.ShewasbeatifiedbyJohnPaulIIonMay14,2005andcanonizedbyBenedictXVIonOctober21,2012.

AngelawasbornatDesenzanodelGarda(Brescia)ItalyonMarch21betweentheyears1470and1474.Shewasorphanedat15,enteredtheSecularFranciscanOrder,consecratingherselftoanintenselifeofprayerandrecollection.Shegatheredandtrainedafewyoungwomenandsentthemtoassistthesick,proposingtothemtheidealofconsecratedvirginitywithouttheconfinesofacloister.Afterapilgrimage to theHolyLandandRome, in1533, she returned toBresciaand founded theCompanyof theHumbleWomenofSaintUrsula.After twoyears theywereofficiallyestablishedastheInstituteoftheUrsulines,whowithoutaspecialreligioushabit,livetheirconsecrationwhileremaininginsertedinthevariousrealitiesoftheworld.ToherfollowersAngelaaskedthemaximumcommitmentintheserviceofothersandinparticular,tothespiritualandmaterial assistance of youth. She died at Brescia on January 27, 1540.Many families ofreligiouswomenwereinspiredbyherteachingsandhonorherastheirpatron.ShewascanonizedbyPiusVIIonMay24,1807.PiusIXextendedherculttotheuniversalChurchin1861.

ClaricewasbornatVignanello(Viterbo)Italy,in1585,thedaughterofMarcoAntonioandOttaviaOrsini,ofthefamousRomanprincelyfamily.At20yearsofage,heenteredtheConventofSanBernardinoinViterbo,whereshetookthenameHyacinthe.RatherthanbecomeaPoorClare,shechosetobeaFranciscanTertiarynotboundbystrictcloister.Forabout15yearsshelivedreligiouslifein“muchvanityandfoolishness.”DuringanillnessshereceivedthegraceofGod—atotal,sincereconversion.Overthenext24yearsshelivedinpovertyandheroicpenance,andclimbedtothehighestlevelsofChristianperfection.Althoughlinkedtothecloister,shewasactivelyinvolvedinapostolicworks.Tothepoor,thesufferingandtheimprisonedshededicatedher charity,material aswell as spiritual. She died on January 30, 1640. Shewas beatified byBenedictXIIIonJuly14,1726andcanonizedbyPiusVIIonMay24,1807.HerremainsarekeptinthechurchofthefriaryofSanBernardinoinViterbo.
