Francis Marion University placed 88student athletes, including 17

softball players, on last year’s Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll (minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale during the academic year), 49 percent of all our student athletes. FMU also

placed 134 student athletes (21 softball players) on its own 2010 Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll.

The Francis Marion University women’ssoftball team will open its 2010 seasonon Feb. 6-7 at the Early Bird Tournamentin Aiken, S.C. The Patriots have beenselected to finish second in the race forthe 2010 Peach Belt Conference softballcrown according to the PBC’s annual pre-season coaches’ poll. North Georgia Col-lege & State University was tabbed as thepreseason favorite.

Sixth-year head coach Stacey Vallee wel-comes back six letterwinners, includingthree position starters, the designated hit-ter, and one starting pitcher, from the 2009squad that finished 32-19, and narrowlymissed earning a bid to the NCAA Divi-sion II national tournament. FMU tied forseventh during the Peach Belt Conferenceregular season.

Leading the returnees is All-Region pitcherand designated hitter Michaela Wolf. Wolf(20-11, 1.58 ERA last season) is the onlyPatriot hurler in the history of the programto win 20 games more than once in a ca-reer – having done it three times. She ownsa 70-34 career mark with 583 strikeoutsin 700.1 career innings. She already ownsthe school career records for wins,strikeouts, and innings pitched. She isalready seventh on the PBC’s all-time winslist. Her career batting numbers includea .307 average with 10 home runs and 78RBIs.

Also returning is All-Peach Belt Confer-ence left fielder Jessica Birchmeier (.324average in 2009) and three-year infieldstarter Kat Beauvais (.311). Birchmeier

owns a career average of .340 and anon-base percentage of .408 in 128 ca-reer games.

Also returning is starting secondbaseman Ashley Jaramillo who enjoyeda very productive freshman season, bat-ting .324 with a team-leading five homeruns and 32 RBIs.

Wolf, Birchmeier, and Beauvais wereamong 10 players from last year’s squadto earn NFCA All-America Scholar-Ath-lete recognition in 2009, and the Patri-ots received an NFCA All-Academic Teamaward for 2009, the fourth consecutiveyear FMU has earned that honor (andsixth time in the past decade).

The 2010 squad includes 11 newcomers:six freshmen and five transfers. Amongthose expected to make immediate con-tributions are junior right-handed pitcherand utility player Cea Knox, junior infielderJessica Hogan, freshman infielder TristanFaile, freshman outfielder Jamie Ross,and freshman catcher-first basemanMeghan Heiser.

Francis Marion has won at least 30games 11 of the last 13 campaigns. ThePatriots' 49-game schedule includeseight home doubleheaders and the an-nual Patriot Invitational Tournament andthe Peach Belt Conference Tournament,both to be hosted at the Freedom Flo-rence Softball Complex.

The 2010 season is the first for confer-ence newcomer Flagler. The PBC tour-nament format has also changed, with

only the top eight teams advancing tothe championship, April 16-18, at theFreedom Florence Recreational Com-plex.

Stacey Vallee is enteringher sixth season as headcoach for the Patriotwomen's softball program.She has compiled a 168-81record in her first five sea-sons on the Patriot bench,including four 30-win cam-paigns.

This past year (2009),Francis Marion ended theseason with a 32-19 record,

and narrowly missed earning an at-large bid to the NCAADivision II National Tournament. The Patriots were rankedin four cartegories in the final 2009 Division II statisticalreport: 33rd in earned run average (1.97), 63rd in win-ning percentage (.627), 81st in batting average (.293),and 98th in scoring (4.67 runs per game).

In 2008, Vallee guided the Patriots to their mostsuccessful season since the program moved from NAIAaffiliation to NCAA Division II membership. Francis Marionended the season ranked fifth in the final NFCA Top 25poll with a 39-16 record, the third-highest win total in teamhistory. The Patriots earned their first-ever bid to theNCAA Division II national tournament, won the South At-lantic Regional, and advanced to the Division II nationalfinals (Elite Eight) in Houston, Texas. The season alsofeatured the program's first-ever appearance on nationaltelevision (CBS College Sports).

In 2007, she directed FMU to a 34-16 record anda tie for fifth-place in the Peach Belt Conference regu-lar-season standings. For a third time in three yearsunder her guidance, the Patriots narrowly missed earn-ing a bid to the Division II Tournament. The Patriots endedthe 2006 year with a 27-16 record, were sixth during thePBC regular season, and were ranked eighth in the SouthAtlantic Region poll.

During a successful first season (2005) at FMU,she guided the Patriots to a 36-14 record and a fifth-place finish during the Peach Belt regular season. The36 wins was at that time the fourth-most in the program'shistory. Six of the Patriots' 10 losses were by one run.The 2005 team spent three weeks ranked in the NFCATop 25 poll, reaching as high as the 10th position. Francis

Marion was ranked in the top 20 nationally for three sta-tistical categories at the end of the season, and was27th in won-loss percentage.

Her five FMU teams have produced 12 All-Con-ference selections, eight All-Region selections, two NFCAAll-America selections, and 37 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes. Her 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009 squads eachearned All-Academic Team honors from the NFCA. In2007, the Patriots ranked 10th among Division II pro-grams (and 22nd among all four-year schools) with a3.470 cumulative grade-point average, and in 2009ranked 24th in Division II with a 3.329 GPA.

Vallee came to Francis Marion in 2004 from SaintLeo University, a member of the NCAA Division II Sun-shine State Conference, where she spent four seasonsas an assistant coach. The Lions posted a 135-88 markduring those four years, including a national tournamentappearance in 2002. She also served as the university'sassistant trainer and taught as an instructor during the2003-04 year, and worked as an assistant strength andconditioning coach for two seasons.

A native of St. Louis, Mo., Vallee was as an as-sistant coach at Florissant Valley Community Collegeduring the fall of 2000, after having served as player/head coach of the Pulheim Gophers during the springand summer of 2000.

A 1999 graduate of Barry University with a B.S.degree in sports medicine and athletic training, she wasa four-year starter at third base. She helped lead theBuccaneers to the NCAA Division II national tournamenteach of her four years, including a second-place finishin 1998. She ended her career third on the school'sgames played list.

She was married during the summer of 2006,and she gave birth to her first child (Ryker) during the2008 season. Her husband Greg works with the Colum-bia (S.C.) United Football Club (CUFC).

Vallee recently completed her fourth year (2005-09) as a member of the NFCA Division II Top 25 commit-tee. She is a member of the National Fastpitch CoachesAssociation, the National Strength and Conditioning As-sociation, the National Council on Strength and Fitness,and the National Athletic Trainers Association. She is acertified strength and conditioning specialist, a certifiedpersonal trainer, and a certified athletic trainer.

Vallee is the ninth head coach in the 31-yearhistory of the FMU softball program. The program boastsan all-time mark of 889-545-3 (.620 winning percent-

age), including five national tournament ap-pearances in the 1980s and the one in 2008.

Overall, FMU has won at least 30 gamesin 11 of the past 13 seasons.

FMU ASSISTANT COACHES

Amanda Player, a native ofLake City, begins her first yearas an assistant coach with thePatriot program.

Her duties include on-fieldcoaching and helping in the ar-eas of recruiting and academ-ics.

For the past several years, shehas worked with the Grand Strand Family YMCA, whileserving as an assistant coach with the Myrtle Beach HighSchool varsity softball team. She helped resurrect theLady Seahawks' program. She also spent the first partof 2009 serving as the tournament area director for theWorld Fastpitch Connection in Myrtle Beach.

Player earned the B.S. degree from Coastal CarolinaUniversity, graduating magna cum laude. She is currentlyworking toward a master's in sports management de-gree through the California University of Pennsylvania.

She served as a student assistant coach at CoastalCarolina during the 2005 season, during which the Chan-ticleers went 24-25 and finished fourth in the Big SouthConference. She has also worked with the City of MyrtleBeach Cultural and Leisure Services department as ayouth programs assistant.

Player is a graduate of Lake City High School, whereshe was a four-year letterwinner on the softball diamond.She earned All-Region honors and was selected to playin the North-South All-Star contest.

Athletic TrainerJoe Cauble

Lee NegrelliLee Negrelli, a native of Men-tor, Ohio, enters her first sea-son on the Patriot staff as anassistant coach.

Her duties include on-fieldcoaching and helping in theareas of recruiting and travelarrangements.

Negrelli spent the 2009 sea-son as an assistant coach at Mount Union College inOhio. The Purple Raiders compiled a 28-16 record.

Prior to joining the coaching staff, Negrelli was a four-year letterwinner for Mount Union, earning All-OAC andAll-Central Region honors in 2008, and twice gainingAcademic All-OAC recognition (2006 and 2008). As asenior, she batted .389 with a team-leading 12 stolenbases while leading the Purple Raiders to a school-record 38 victories, an OAC Tournament title, and anNCAA Tournament appearance. Mount Union averaged31 wins per season during her four years.

She earned a bachelor's degree in sport managementfrom Mount Union in 2008.

She has worked as a sports nutrition consultant for thepast year, and was a personal trainer and Youth Fit-ness Coordinator at the Alliance (Ohio) Family YMCA.

FMU SOFTBALL FIELDThe FMU Softball Field is located behind the SmithUniversity Center and beyond the rightfield fence ofCormell (baseball) Field. The field features a naturalgrass surface with dimensions of 190 feet in left, 220in center, and 190 in right. The field has seating forapproximately 200 spectators.

The Patriots also play some home games, includingthe annual Patriot Invitational Tournament, at the nine-field Freedom Florence Softball Complex, located onthe south side of Florence, 15 minutes from campus.

Francis Marion University is a member of the 13-school NCAA Division II Peach BeltConference (formerly the Peach Belt Athletic Conference). Other PBC members includeArmstrong Atlantic State University (in Savannah, Ga.), Augusta State University (Augusta,Ga.), Clayton State University (Morrow, Ga.), Columbus State University (Columbus, Ga.),Flagler College (St. Augustine, Fla.), Georgia College & State University (Milledgeville, Ga.),Georgia Southwestern State University (Americus, Ga.), Lander University (Greenwood,S.C.), University of Montevallo (Montevallo, Ala.), UNC Pembroke, North Georgia College& State University (Dahlonega, Ga.), and USC Aiken. Formed in December 1989 andheadquartered in Augusta, Ga., the PBC conducts championships in 12 sports, six for men andsix for women. Of the 13 members, only Clayton State and Montevallo do not sponsorsoftball. The 2010 Peach Belt Conference Softball Tournament is set for April 16-18 inFlorence at the Freedom Florence Softball Complex, with only the top eight teams taking part.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS - PATRIOT SOFTBALL2009 - Ten members of 2009 FMU women’s softball team received National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA)All-America Scholar-Athlete recognition. They were outfielders Stevie Arrand, Lakyn Bendle, Jessica Birchmeier, andMegan Pangburn; infielders Kat Beauvais, Tamela Bell, Laura Hauff, and Shawn Moore; utility player Jessie Alesi; andleft-handed pitcher Michaela Wolf........FMU also earned Girls Got Game/NFCA All-Academic Team recognition forthe fourth consecutive year. With a 3.329 cumulative grade-point average, Francis Marion ranked 24th among Divi-sion II programs. FMU previously earned this team honor in 1999, 2000, 2006, 2007, and 2008.......Six FMU playerswere listed in the final 2009 NCAA Division II softball statistical report, while the Patriot squad is ranked highly in severalteam categories. In the individual reports, junior left-handed pitcher Michaela Wolf ranked 36th in pitching wins (20),45th in earned run average (1.58), and 121st in strikeouts per nine innings (5.9). Freshman righty Lauren Bubeckranked 116th in ERA at 2.19. At the plate, senior outfielder Lakyn Bendle ranked fourth nationally in sacrifice hits pergame (0.47) and senior shortstop Shannan Tyson ended the year as the ninth toughest batter to strike out. Tysonfanned only six times in 203 plate appearances. Bendle laid down 24 sacrifice bunts in 51 games en route to settinga new Peach Belt Conference career mark in that category with 62. Freshman second baseman Ashley Jaramilloranked 76th in doubles per game (0.29), while junior leftfielder Jessica Birchmeier was listed 156th in walks per game(0.41). In the team rankings, the Patriot women ranked 33rd in Division II in earned run average (1.97), 63rd in winningpercentage (.627), 81st in batting average (.293), and 98th in scoring (4.67 runs per game).....Francis Marionended the season with a 32-19 record, and narrowly missed earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II NationalTournament......Junior left-handed pitcher Michaela Wolf was named to the second-team Louisville Slugger/NFCAAll-Southeast Region team and to the Daktronics Inc. All-Region squad......Five Patriots were named to the 2009Peach Belt Conference Softball All-Academic Team: senior first baseman Tamela Bell, senior centerfielder LakynBendle, junior left-handed pitcher Michaela Wolf, junior leftfielder Jessica Birchmeier, and junior third baseman KatBeauvais.....Four Patriots were selected to the 2009 All-Peach Belt Conference Team: senior designated player andutility player Laura Hauff was named to the first team, while junior left-handed pitcher Michaela Wolf, junior left fielderJessica Birchmeier, and freshman right-handed pitcher Lauren Bubeck were selected to the second team.

2008 - The Patriot women's softball team was ranked fifth in the final 2008 National Fastpitch Coaches Association(NFCA) Division II Top 25 poll, the highest ranking for the Patriot program since the school moved to NCAA affiliation in1992. FMU enjoyed its most successful season in 20 years posting a 39-16 record, the third-highest win total in teamhistory. The Patriots earned their first-ever bid to the NCAA Division II national tournament, won the South AtlanticRegional, and advanced to the Division II national finals (Elite Eight) in Houston, Texas. FMU played one of the tougherschedules in the country with seven contests against nationally ranked opponents and nearly half its games (27)against squads that made the national tournament. Prior to its breakthrough 2008 campaign, the squad had narrowlymissed out on earning a bid to the NCAA Division II tournament for four straight years. The program’s highest nationalranking occurred in 1988 when Francis Marion was ranked No. 1 in the pre-season NAIA poll.
