EDITORIALNaturallySustainable Change of scenery.Because Franche-Comté is a natural region open

onto the world, the requirements for top quality green

tourism is obvious. It invites you more than ever to the

sustainable change of scenery; from the emerald

forests that spread to the four corners of the region,

to the bewitching perfumes of its high pastures,

without forgetting the exceptional sensations that its

landscapes offer, Franche-Comté awakens the five

senses with tact and originality. Sometimes hidden

under a thick white mattress of snow, sometimes

luxuriant with greenery, the humans knew how

to adapt to this natural environment that is full

of character. The sustainable change of scenery,

spearheads tourism in the region and associates the

love of simple and authentic things with brio and

exclusivity for dynamic tourist innovations.

Franche-Comté, a region of strong character, shaped,

shapes and will shape again, for a long time to come,

the hearts of its inhabitants, and the hearts of its visitors.

A break in the heart of the trees in the Cabins of the Big Lakes This concept matches: rest, nature discovery, and “eco” charm. The Cabins of the Big Lakes, at a height of more than 5 meters, welcome dreamers into cosy cabins, each of which is different. At dawn, a good breakfast, placed at the foot of the tree in a basket, is waiting to be pulled up and savoured on your terrace in the heart of the trees.

Awaken your senses on the ‘Jura Wine’ tourist routeIn 2010, the trend of the ‘Jura Wine’ tourist route is to match sensuality with the launch of a new fashion tasting kit, dedicated to women, for a discovery using the five senses. The femininity of the tour also takes first place with ideas for weekends, for those who wish to seduce with romantic rooms, or with very “girly” named vintages.

Discover the American-Indian culture

The 2nd edition of the Pow-Wow, “Dance with the Loue River”, organized

in Ornans in June 2010, welcomes the big European meeting of American Indian tribes.

A unique chance to discover a people, their culture, traditions and history through

spiritual songs, sacred dances, conferences, and a lot of other interesting events! At the time of the 1st edition in 2008,

12.000 visitors attended this unique event in France. It is not by accident that the American Indians set up their home in

the heart of Franche-Comté; the region which is close to nature, is the perfect

framework to welcome their ancestral beliefs and rituals. As “A river runs through it“,

what could be more natural than “Dance with the Loue River“ planting its tepees here...

Regardless of age, anyone can prepare their journey to Franche-Comté. A mini site for children “Enfant” is now online, where Pâquerette (Daisy) the funny cow, presents the activities and sites of her region in a colourful universe. www.franche-comte.org/enfant

Organizing your journey becomes a child’s game by using the heading “Mon carnet de voyage” (My travel diary). Visitors can select the walks, - activities and accommodation of their choice, and build their itinerary step by step. The web search engine is de-signed to be intuitive, accurate and efficient. The in-ternet user only needs to indicate information such as a site, a budget, a desired activity, and the informa-tion is automatically sorted in order to provide you with all the necessary information. And for those in hurry, multiple ideas for stays are suggested. They offer all-inclusive stays in Franche-Comté for all kinds of tastes or budgets.www.franche-comte.org/sejours

The headings: “Practical Information, Discovery, Municipal Life, the Mag”, and others... FAMILY

MontbéliardIn August, the ‘City of the Princes’ dedicates its yearly ‘Kids Festival’ to children: workshops, entertainment and parades. For a whole weekend, the city belongs to children. Over the year, various events are organ-ised by the tourist office to discover the Heritage and science in another way.

Belfort, ‘City of the Lion’, or we should say ‘City of the Small Lions’...A playful walk in the heart of the old city gives you the chance to discover more than 200 hidden lions in the architecture of the city. A walk to do as a fam-ily with a tourist map, or accompanied by a ‘story-telling guide’ from the tourist office. Puppets theatre, entertainment, “Wednesdays at the Castle” dedicated to children; “FIMU for Children” is a specific device during the festival on the Pentecost weekend. Belfort spoils its young visitors!

Moirans-en-MontagneEvery summer, the French toys capital welcomes young children and their families to the ‘Idéklic’ event, the international festival for children, which takes place every year in July. In 2010 the city’s toy museum is proud to become Léon’s residence, who is the emblematic character of Vilac toys, and mas-cot of the French pavilion at the Shanghai world trade fair in 2010. Very well known by children, this kitten greets people with its friends ‘Babar the El-ephant’, ‘Noddy’, ‘Barbapapa’, ‘Bécassine’ and other characters. For all those who prefer to go for a walk in the open air, it is also possible to do 7 discovery walks which focus on the imaginary for children. Transform a simple family walk into an unforgetta-ble experience. With a tracking game, an adventure, or an orienteering race, children will be amazed by the environment and develop their perspicacity and their curiosity, which is far from being a bad thing…

Montbéliard, Belfort & Moirans-en-Montagne Three cities dedicated to children and family outingsBECAUSE FRANCHE-COMTÉ IS A REGION TO BE VISITED AS A FAMILY OR EVEN AS A GROUP, THE YOUNGEST ARE CONSIDERED IN THE SAME WAY AS THE MOST DEMANDING TOURISTS.

Incredible December in Franche-ComtéIn this region where the landscapes look surprisingly like the land of the ‘tall man in red’ (Santa Claus), the fairyland of the festive season invades cities and villages for one month. Christmas markets, Christmas Eve and New year’s Eve parties in the streets, entertainment, events, festivities… The streets of Franche-Comté put on their dresses of ‘light’ and become the theatre of an Incredible December. Fruit of collaboration between the different sites where events take place, the Incredible December club offers you a varied and coherent stay to celebrate the end of the year as it should be!

FOCUS ON... TOURISM & THE DISABLED IN BELFORT

Involved in the process of accessible tourism for everyone, the Belfort ‘House of Tourism’ is constantly expanding its list of activities, accommodation, and restaurants, adapted to welcome the disabled, be they physically, sensorial or mentally disabled.. The FIMU, (see p20) has developed a specific device: the almost-totality of the 15 stages is accessible, and some volunteers are trained to welcome the disabled.

The ‘Citadelle de Besançon’ celebrates its 50th year since opening September 8, 1959, the Citadel opened to the pub-lic and inaugurated its first exhibition of butterflies and beetles, a collection from the Natural History Museum. It is now the most visited citadel in France. To celebrate its worthy career, numerous events and new festivities will be organized during its 50th year anniversary. www.citadelle.com

The celebration of Bartholdi’s Lion for... it is 130 years old!A majestic sculpture and the source of many scandals in Belfort at the end of the 19th century, the completion of Bartholdi’s Lion has not been cele-brated as it should have been. This is the reason why, at the occasion of the stone feline’s 130th birthday, the Town Hall will honour it, and will organise big events to match the size of the monument.www.ot-belfort.fr

Vauban (1633-1707) : Great specialist of defensive architecture, Vauban left Franche-Comté with a rich heritage of two untouchable treasures. His incredible pencil stroke enabled to develop the most clever fortification strategies, one in Belfort and one in Besançon.

Ledoux (1736-1806) : Famous utopian architect of the ‘Century of Lights’, he made Arc-et-Senans an ideal city represented by the Salt Mines and the organization around the mines. More than a salt mine, it constituted a real small city, even sheltering, in those days, a school for the children of the salt mine workers.

Le Corbusier (1887-1965) : According to varying opinions, disturbing or magic, the chapel of Ronchamp is a one of kind religious build-ing in its own style. The layout of the volumes and masses is astonishing, and offers a great place to rest. The project, considered mad in its begin-nings, and difficult to build after the war, this chapel constitutes one of his most beautiful works.

Courbet (1819-1877) : The Courbet farm, fief of the realistic painter Gustave Courbet in the Doubs, became, thanks to the will of his sister Juliet, a place of homage and memory. It is in this way, that today, Juliet’s Café honours the artist born in Ornans, offering tasting of local produce while admiring his works.

MUSIC

Just like the picture on the festival posters and their model clay characters that seems so real... Who better to present this unusual festival that celebrates its 24th edition from 22 to 24 May, 2010…

The FIMU in few words...Diversity, conviviality and sharing. Those are the FIMU’s main words. A colourful festival that wel-comes more than 2500 musicians every year for 200 concerts. A great success!

What about the schedule, its special feature? Many varied styles of music: classical, electronic, music of the world, chorus, jazz, rock, rap... Groups come from all over the world: more than 37 countries are represented at the FIMU. And not forgetting the groups that compete in the “Come and play voluntar-ily” events to give concerts of great quality with real professionalism.

Concerning the organization, how does the festival work?Every thing relies on an important network of volunteers, mainly students from the University of Belfort Montbéliard (UTBM). Working with the festival organisers of the Belfort Town hall, they’ve got it under control! They manage the welcoming of the musicians and the public, stage set-up, catering… A real hive dedicated to the festival and its success.

Every year the public makes the festival a reality and a success… More than 80 000 people attended the 2009 edition of the festival. The number of spectators has not stopped increasing in the last few years. People of all ages, Franc-Comtois, inhabitants of adjacent regions and tourists take advantage of the chance to discover our beautiful region. They all leave it promising to come back, charmed by the event, the city and the region.

In order to protect the natural site of Malsaucy, during the Eurockéennes, the festival with ‘green convictions’, numerous waste-sorting areas are arranged for the campers. Beside the event, the hedgehog farm offers “eco-bio” guest rooms, where you can find local produce from the farm or made by local producers. For an even more sustainable change of scenery, the Bugnon Cabins, totally made of wood, as well as their Yurts are set right in the forest for a cosy and eco-friendly night. Perched in a meadow, the Moulin de la Pelle produces its own energy thanks to a photo-voltaic system in respect of the environment.

The region also has a network of self-caterings and holiday cottages “Welcome to the farm” for a stay in the heart of nature. With a total of 5 800 farmers, the cottages offer many ways of discovering farm life. From an educational approach with children, or by tasting local produce, staying in guest-rooms, or in a ‘sporty’ stay in anequestrian farm, “Welcome to the Farm” invites country lovers and shows the farming world under a new-light.www.bienvenue-a-la-ferme.com/franche-comte

Sustainable territory by nature, Franche-Comté possesses a very particular site like no other: le Plateau des Mille Étangs. No, you are not dreaming! You are not in Finland, but definitely in Franche-Comté. This spectacular site owes its name to the presence of a multitude

of small ponds dating from the ice age about 12 000 years ago. The charm of the Mille Étangs stands in their general atmosphere and the particular type of the vegetation of the humid zones: desolate moors, uncountable ponds, peat-bogs, torrents and streams, hollow lanes that lead to ‘hypothetical’ farms, limited by stone wall. On the first foothills of the Vosges, the Haute-Saône sings an Irish song.
