NOAA’s

Community and CommunicationNOAA’s Fragile Earth Studios has investigated the use of game and virtual world technologies in learning communities with widely dispersed audiences and found that games and simulations provide powerful tools for educators to teach and share knowledge effectively.

EvaluationBoth students and teachers reported that NOAA’s games were: Educational while focused on specificconcepts; interesting and engaging while effective for learning concepts; and successful in helping stu-dents to feel that their actions made a difference.

“Sit still and listen” is an outdated teaching style. We need to provide content delivery methods that can better serve students in the digital age. Games have the power to provide environments that encourage autonomous learning exploration.

Games Make People Care

People play games not just for fun, but also for the satisfaction of solving complex problems requiring reasoning and perseverance. If we made solving real-world challenges as engaging as video games, we could harness a new age of global creativity.

Why Games? Earth’s Shadows

In this multi-player

setting, continents are

projected as shadows

on the walls blending

data, science, and art.

Who We Are

Fragile Earth Studios isa project sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) that leverages data visualizations, simulations, and games to better understand real-world challenges.

Solutions

Fragile Earth Studios’ designers, scientists, and educational experts provide unique access and experience to design interactive media solutions.

What We Offer

We seek out beneficial partnerships providing consulting on game, visualization, and simulationdevelopment.

We provide unique access to science content and scientists.

Experience

Started in 2005, Fragile Earth Studios represents one of the first concerted efforts within government to develop material for games, simulations, and virtual worlds.

Conferences

‘Science came to play’ at the NOAA Games and Simulation Summit held on January 11-12, 2011.

Participants attended from 10 federal and state agencies and universities.

Topics included best practices and reviewing evaluation methods for gaming and simulation.

Online

Fragile Earth Studios provides development services for a variety of projects both internal and external to NOAA.

We provide curricula and resources for students interested in a better understanding of the power of games. fragileearthstudios.com
