THE INSIDE SHOWS
In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the de-bris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they be as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' smallest speck-like flaws. And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus’ images, is true: “What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh.” By and by, the inside will show through. -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SIMPLE WISDOM
The Bemba live in the African country of Zambia in small villages of mud huts. These farming people work very hard, but the soil is poor, and they grow just enough to feed themselves. No one survives long past forty. Yet the Bemba have a remarkable tradition. When a person acts irresponsibly or unjustly, he or she is placed in the center of the village, alone and unshackled. All work ceases and everyone gathers in a large circle around the accused person. One at a time, the villagers recite all the good things the person in the center of the circle has done during life. All the positive attributes, good deeds, strengths, and kindnesses are fully described. The cere-mony may go on for days until every single person has spoken. Then the circle is broken. A joyful celebration welcomes the person, both symbolically and literally, back into the community. - Trisha Johnston, WLP.
Every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes,
nor do they gather grapes from brambles. - Luke 6:44

Some 80 parishioners joined the “Walk to Kimball and Back” last Saturday, Feb. 2nd for the Kick-off of the new Wellness Ministry of St. Mary Parish. Photo shows the good mix of male and female pack that sported ages from 8 to 80 plus, many of whom are young adults and mature ones. Mark Villas (2nd from right, front row) of the Young Adult Ministry laid the groundwork for the Health Apostolate to be established. The Saturday morning is meant to be a weekly thing following the 8 o’clock Mass in Church. Good, healthy eyes and great luck will help to spot Fr. Nemie in the picture!
