Dear Friends, Vatican II did a lot of good for the Church. One of its best things was the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults - RCIA. We’ve seen the folks involved in this process each year when we’ve welcomed them at Sunday Mass, or when we’ve sent them to the archbishop for acceptance by the whole Church of Newark, or especially at Easter Vigil, when we’ve celebrated Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist with them. One of the other steps in this process is a ritual of self-examination called the Scrutinies. I know that’s an odd word but it’s just the familiar practice of taking a look at how genuine we are with others, or are not. We scrutinize our thoughts and behaviors, our emotions and our motivations to uncover both what we’re doing well and what needs healing. The Scrutinies help RCIA candidates to see more clearly how they’re following Christ or how they’re avoiding him. In this sense, we all should engage in the activity of scrutinizing our lives frequently. In fact, that’s what our Lenten Mission has been trying to help us do. This Sunday’s gospel is a good example. It’s St. John’s story of the man born blind. Blindness for him is a spiritual metaphor as well as a tragic disability. The story invites us to scrutinize our discipleship to discern how we’re blind to Jesus and how his healing can help us to see him more clearly so we can follow him more sincerely. That’s been the goal of our Mission: Fr. John Ranieri raised the issue of the source of our self-image - is it rooted in an excessive concern with what we’ve achieved or not achieved, or, how we’re already in Christ’s image and likeness, that we’re children of God...all of us? Dr. Sylvia McGeary challenged us to consciously live out of this dignity, this divine “DNA”? How? She quoted Pope Francis: by encountering others as persons, not just roles, by accompanying them in their joys and struggles, and by risking change for the good of all by a genuine dialogue of perspectives and feelings. Fr. Pat Seiber took this a step further by asking us: are we people of prayer only or people of prayer and action, especially for the vulnerable and the fearful, like the young in our schools? Christian worship must lead to action, the kind of action practiced by Christ, to the action of the Cross and beyond. This week, Dr. Mara Zukowski will continue to help us follow Christ through the Cross to his new life of justice and peace. Please remember: the Mission isn’t for information. It’s for our transformation. That can’ t happen without some form of self-scrutiny. Love, Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

Vatican II did a lot of good for the Church. That’s been the goal of our Mission:

Fr.

That can’t happen without some form of self-scrutiny.

Love,

Fr. Joe

Husbands, single men, guardians, fathers, grandfathers, uncles, teachers, coaches, investment bankers, carpenters, lawyers, retirees, managers, doctors, police officers....In fact, when it comes right down to it, they are men just like you who want to deepen their faith and reflect on what really matters.

REFLECTION Otherwise by Jane Kenyon

I got out of bed on two strong legs. It might have been otherwise. I ate cereal, sweet milk, ripe, flawless peach. It might have been otherwise. I took the dog uphill to the birchwood. All morning I did the work I love. At noon I lay down with my mate. It might have been otherwise. We ate dinner together at a table with silver candlesticks. It might have been otherwise. I slept in a bed in a room with paintings on the walls, and planned another day just like this day. But one day, I know, it will be otherwise.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

4th Sunday of Lent “For God so loved the world that he gave

his only Son…” (John 3:16)

Of all the wonderful gifts that God has given to us, the gift of His own Son is truly the greatest. How can we ever thank God for a gift like that? God does not ask us to sacrifice our own precious firstborn, but He does ask that we are grateful and generous with our God-given gifts. That we nurture and develop them and return with increase.

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we become ever

more truly the People of God. If you have any comments, please feel free to contact any of the following Pastoral Council

Representatives: Donna Stickna, Melissa Rovetto-Ruffner & Marianne Cummins .

Observing Lent 2018

To further enrich the Lenten experience, we will continue a series of discussions on Wednesday evenings

March 14, and 21 on the general subject of discipleship. Join Father Joe and fellow parishioners in the church from 7:30 to 8:45 pm

Next weekend: Father Joe and Father Colin will lead us into our high holydays

by drawing together our Lenten mission experience in terms

of who we are as the Church of St. Anne in relation to God and

to one another.

Then we will move into Palm Sunday and Holy Week.

On Tuesday of Holy Week, March 27, we are invited to a “day

of mercy” to personally experience of the Sacrament of

Reconciliation. There will be a priest in the church for

confession from 12 noon until 8 pm.

We have been taking a closer look at our dignity as human beings.

We have looked at what that means in terms of our personal values and how we

relate to one another.

Does my daily life reflect my personal dignity? Does my work reflect my

worship?

Does my relationship with others—family or larger community—reflect an

understanding of their dignity as human beings? Does our shared liturgy

reflect our life together?

Have I violated this dignity in any way? How can I do better?

Examine the past year and look ahead.

That’s what a sacramental confession is about.

ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK - 2017 LENTEN REGULATIONS 1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is

continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus,

and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of

Abstinence. On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which, if added together, would not

exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast.

On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.

2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast and Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation.

3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional

abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance.

4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, February 18, 2018 to The

Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, May 27, 2018. *Canon 920, §1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of

receiving Communion at least once a year.

We are grateful to the 1,597 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $14,224.00 in the offertory and $2,837.00 through Online Giving offertory, which along with

other fees and donations, totaled $21,907.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,947.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher

than others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for

our extra energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY

envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that

envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with

your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back

of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And

special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations. Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
