Dear Friends, In a beautifully written little book, Deeper Than Words, the Benedictine brother, David Steindl-Rast offers a series of meditations on the meaning of the Apostles Creed. It’s called the Apostles creed not because they formulated it but because this is a statement of the basic faith of the apostles. It’s dated from about 150 A.D. and many think it comes from the Church in Rome. It’s believed that this summation was used to teach those who wanted to be baptized into that city’s Christian community. I’d like to single out two phrases of that creed and, following Steindl-Rast’s suggestions about them, reflect with you about the meaning of the Feast of Easter. The two phrases are: I believe, and The Third day He Rose Again From the Dead We use the phrase so easily I believe that we may miss a significant implication. What did those early Christians mean by the phrase? Steindl-Rast points out that the word believe is a translation of a Latin word, credo (from which we get the word creed). Now here is something quite interesting: credo, he explains, is really rooted in two other Latin words cor and do. Cor means heart and Do comes from the Latin verb, dare, to give. So, when we say “I believe”, we are saying: “I give my heart.” “I give my heart.” I entrust and commit my life to what my faith shows about creation and especially about human life. It tells me that my life, and all of life and creation, come forth from a loving God, so that all is precious. It’s precious to him and we are entrusting our lives to live by this worth. The Third Day He Rose Again From The Dead Brother David points out that this phrase reveals the full depth of the worth of creation proclaimed in the earlier part of the creed. The Jesus it speaks about lived his life in the light of the dignity given him by his Father. He shared that sense of worth with all he met…and he was unjustly killed by the powers that be for doing so. He was snuffed out to show just how worth-less they thought he really was. It’s this Jesus that God, his Father, raised from death thus proving that Jesus and his way was in touch with what was right, just and true not the powers that be. More than vindication, however, being raised meant that as the Risen Christ, he now was and is the new power at the heart of history, calling us to live with him lives that are just and loving. Death is not the end of our story. Life is too precious for that. I once had a deep sense of this preciousness and that sense has stayed with me ever since. As many of you know, my youngest brother, Larry, suddenly died when he was 29. It was, as you can imagine, and as some of you have also experienced, a devastating moment. In the midst of this, it hit me that since my brother had died then God would not have let that happen without being there for him and with him. I began to trust that for Christ to be true to his love meant that he had to care for my brother in his death. He had to take him to live in a way far better than we knew. But this was true not just for Larry. It also became more and more true for me and for my family. Since that time, life has taken on a deeper and richer meaning for me than I ever had thought possible. His death opened me to a new life, to a real sense of how special we all are. God didn’t stop caring for Larry and for those he left behind. His love is stronger than death and what he creates is more important to him than we can imagine. Happy Easter everyone! Love Fr. Joe

MEDITATION

The Easter Challenge

-Joyce Rupp

Every year we hear the stories

empty tomb, surprised grievers,

runners with news and revelation,

unexpected encounters,

conversations on the road,

tales of nets filling with fish,

and breakfast on a seashore

And every year

the dull and the dead in us

meets our Easter challenge:

to be open to the unexpected,

to believe beyond security,

to welcome God in every form,

and trust in our own greening

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS

Easter Sunday

“Set your minds on things that are above, not

on things that are on earth.” – Colossians 3:2

On this day we thank God for His Son, Jesus,

who dies and rose for us. We celebrate and

sing “Alleluia.” Let’s try to keep the joy of this

Easter season in our hearts throughout the

year! Pray daily and list for God’s response on

how we should use our gifts to fulfill His plan.

BACK TO OUR ROOTS WILL NOT MEET THIS WEEK.

Next meeting will be on

Thursday, April 16th

in the Faith Center!!

During April, Pope Francis asks us to pray...

That people may learn to respect creation and care for it as a gift of God.

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

along with other fees and donations totaled $23,803.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $21,026.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than

others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra

energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you

should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly

appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The

energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot

them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already

been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!
