Fr. Hedman

“Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God the almighty Father.” “May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of His name, for our good and good of all His Holy

Church.” These words that we pray during the offertory at Mass are deeply spiritually rich, but we can sometimes miss the meaning of words we pray so often. As best as I can tell from doing some quick Googling, this prayer originates in the Mass roughly around the 700-800s, in Gallican (i.e. France) Missals. The priest’s words (“my sacrifice and yours”) may originally have been referring to concelebrating priests, but gradu-ally came to have the deeper meaning of referring to both the sacri-fice of the priest (the Eucharist) and the sacrifices of the people (the prayers and offerings that the laity unite to the priest in their hearts). Thus, it’s important to remember during the offertory that it’s not an “intermission” between the readings and the Eucharistic Prayer – it’s a time to bring together our offerings and prayers, recalling those for whom we’ve promised to pray, and place them all at the altar into the hands of the priest, so that our sacrifices might be of-fered with that perfect sacrifice that is Jesus. The response of the people to the call of the priest, asking God to accept the sacrifice we offer, mirrors the words the priest whispers a few moments earlier: “With humble spirit and contrite heart may we be accepted by you, O Lord, and may our sacrifice in your sight this day be pleasing to you, Lord God.” At the offertory, we come before God asking Him to take our pray-ers, our offerings, our sacrifices, and to accept them for the good of the people present and the good of the whole Church. The offertory follows the prayers of the faithful, when we audibly offer our peti-tions to God – let the offertory be a time to conform intentions of our hearts to the words of our mouth, bringing before God every-thing we wish to put before Him that it might be united with the priestly sacrifice and accepted by our Heavenly Father.

God bless,

BULLETIN INQUIRIES Contact our Communications Coordinator.

Let’s talk...

If you ever start a sentence with, “The Church needs to…” then this is for you! Plan to discuss and provide input this fall about the best ways for the local Catholic Church to form:

· Parishes that are in the service of evangelization; · Missionary disciples who know Jesus’s love and respond to his call; and · Youth and young adults in and for a Church that is always young.

Join a small group to discuss and give feedback on priorities within each Synod focus area. Mark your calendar for Tuesdays from 9:30-11:30 am or 6:30-8:30 pm at the Annex, starting September 21st through October 26th at our parish. For more information, visit us online at stpeterfl.org/synod.

To allow our members to attend the September/October Synod small group sessions, the Tuesday Morning Women's Bible Study's tradition-al September start-up time will be delayed until November 9th.

This year, we will begin our study with Jeff Cavin's and Andrew Swaf-ford's ROMANS; THE GOSPEL OF SALVATION from Ascension Press. Sessions will be held on Tues-day mornings from 9:40 am-11:30 am at the Annex.

Registration and purchase of the study workbook information will follow in future bulletins.

GOD IS LOVE PRAYER Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us so much. Help us to receive and share that love with you, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and others. Protect us from evil and help us to live a holy life like Jesus, Mary and Joseph did in Nazareth. Bless our work and help us to offer our difficulties to you as an act of love.

Jesus, just as you grew in age, grace and wisdom in Nazareth, help us to do the same so we may live wholesome, pure and generous lives. Help us to make sacrifices for the good of others like you did by dying on the cross for our sins.

Holy Spirit, fill everyone's heart with your divine love so we all may be holy. Help all mothers and fathers to be open to new human life and experience the joy of cooperating with God's plan. Inspire everyone to respect the dignity of human life at all stages.

Mary and Joseph, pray for us that we will be totally open to God's plan for our life as you modeled so wonderfully. Help us to be humble, grateful and generous in our response to the goodness and love of God. Amen

-Bishop Donald E. DeGrood
