Dear Friends, This past weekend, our Bold Youth Group conducted its Souper Bowl Collection for our Food Pantry. Thanks to so many of you, the basement of the rectory is now lined with bags of cans of soup and other items. The volunteers who maintain the shelves will be working on arranging those cans for days to come...and they’ ll be doing so joyfully. We give food to others because food is essential to being healthy. While we all value keeping healthy, staying healthy doesn’t just depend on our personal choice to do so. It depends on being able to get healthy food. To do that, we all need farmers, food handlers, markets, truckers, people to work in the food stores, from managers, to stock workers, to cashiers. In other words, we need people valuing the efficiency and the profit motive of order so that individuals and families can get healthy food. When St. Anne, however, organizes to help those who can’t afford that food, we enact a value broader than health and order. We enact the religious and Christian value of caring for the least amongst us. Such a purpose encompasses a deeper value than efficiency and profit, as important as they are. We humanize the order of food distribution to include all who are in need. Healthy food isn’t only for those who can afford it. It’s for all because it’s a human right. In effect, we become responsible for the quality of life we share with each other. We personally chose to be partners in the creation of a moral universe. By the gift of our talents, our resources, our time, we respond to Christ who calls us beyond ourselves to do what we can to make the larger community a more human place. Another way that this call is heard is with the Sharing God’s Blessing Annual Appeal. Next weekend will begin the drive for 2018. Cardinal Tobin will be asking us to do what we can do to enhance the quality of life in our diocese. There are, of course, many ways to do this. One is prayer; another is concrete assistance; another is a financial commitment. If you can’t do the last, maybe you can do one or both of the others. We all understand the meaning of limited resources and many of us are stretched to that limit. This year, we are being asked to raise $78,000. Once again, through the Appeal, we can help to make our schools and religious education programs the best they can be. We can assist our community’s outreach to the poor through the work of Catholic Charities. We can support the funding of the seminaries, the senior priest residences, and the poorer parishes in our area. We are asked to make a pledge that we can pay off in installments over the next twelve months. No money is asked for this weekend, just a pledge. As I mentioned above, if you can’t make one, don’t think twice about it. But if you can, let me urge you to do so. We will send the pledge envelopes that have been filled out to the Archdiocese and it will send monthly reminders to you. Thank you for all that you can do! Love, Fr.Joe

REFLECTION JUBILEE -Mary Ellen Smajo

You’ve multiplied the many fruits of every gift You’ve given me: music, service, intellect, with love-begetting-love multiplied most; and now like a plant in a pot You ask me to rest; and looking up I see Your hand and feel grace shower down restoration, emancipation, readying me for Your coaxing forth the new growth, the new buds, the new fruits, the new gifts-for-the-world. At rest I receive what I need for next, what serves You best, no longer tasks on a list, but Kingdom-building-by-BEING alone.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time “Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed…He told them, ‘Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose Have I come.’”

(Mark 1:35, 38)

In today’s Gospel reading we see a perfect example of stewardship. Jesus gives His time to do all that God wishes – healing the sick and preaching. But before He begins, Jesus makes time to be alone with God in prayer. It is through prayer, spending time th God, that we find the strength to do what He wishes us to do. Be sure to find time every day to be with God.

MILESTONE ANNIVERSARY MASSES There will be two special Masses celebrating

There will be a Eucharist Info meeting on Wednesday, February 7 at 7:30pm in the Church Hall. This meeting is

for parents only. You will be able to pick up your child’s Eucharist prep book.

We know Global warming is daunting. So here’s a place to start. The Faith Center is continuing its parish-wide program Creation At The Crossroads

by offering 17 often-asked questions with some straightforward answers in an 8-Part Series. The Qs/As will appear in St. Anne’s parish bulletin for 8

weeks. (The information comes from a New York Times National Sunday article titled “Your Questions About Climate Change, Answered”

published on September 24, 2017.)

PART 4 -- WHAT COULD HAPPEN? (continued)

3. How much will the seas rise?

The real question is how fast. The ocean has accelerated and is now rising at a rate of about a foot per century, forcing governments and

property owners to spend tens of billions of dollars fighting coastal erosion. But if that rate continued, it would probably be manageable, experts say.

The risk is that the rate will increase still more. Scientists who study the Earth’s history say waters could rise by a foot per decade in a

worst-case scenario, though that looks unlikely. Many experts believe that even if emissions stopped tomorrow, 15 to 20 feet of sea level rise is

already inevitable, enough to flood many cities unless trillions of dollars are spent protecting them. How long it will take is unclear. But if emissions

continue apace, the ultimate rise could be 80 or 100 feet.

4. Is recent crazy weather tied to climate change?

Some of it is. Scientists have published strong evidence that the warming climate is making heat waves more frequent and intense. It is also

causing heavier rainstorms, and coastal flooding is getting worse as the oceans rise because of human emissions. Global warming has intensified

droughts in regions like the Middle East, and it may have strengthened a recent drought in California.

In many other cases, though – hurricanes, for example – the linkage to global warming for particular trends is uncertain or disputed.

Scientists are gradually improving their understanding as computer analyses of the climate grow more powerful.

“Authentic development includes efforts to bring about an integral improvement in the

quality of human life, and this entails considering the setting in which people live their lives.

These settings influence the way we think, feel, and act. In our rooms, our homes, our

workplaces and neighborhoods, we use our environment as a way of expressing our identity.”

Pope Francis, Laudato Si’, 147

St. Anne Parish, with dedicated parishioners, supports Father English Catholic Charities and Eva’s Village both

located in Paterson with the pickup and delivery of bread and baked goods on a daily basis from Palermo’s

Bakery and Zadie’s Bakery which are located in Fair Lawn.

We are in desperate need for the members of our parish to join our current list of drivers, which has grown thin

due to normal attrition. Your participation will enable us to continue this effort.

Please consider joining this group if you are able to donate about an hour and a half a week to this effort.

Your will fulfill a great need within the community, and keep a promise to Christ to “Feed the Poor and

Hungry”. We will be teamed up with an existing team member to show you the route and schedule of pickups.

We are grateful to the 1,364 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $11,482.00 in the offertory and $2,977.00 through Online Giving offertory, which along with

other fees and donations, totaled $18,994.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others.

Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the

back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that

week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes

right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in

the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR 2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select the

Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.” When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations. Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
