I think we have it!

In my message to you within our Summer Come & See, I focused on the topic of a “Singular Idea” to build our 2017 - 18 ministries and programs around. I also men-tioned I would be working on the concept with our ministry and program leaders throughout the summer—and I invited the input of the entire parish.

I’m happy and grateful to report that more than a few of you delivered. And in the end, we have settled on the singular idea of “Sacrifice.”

This is the simple, yet profound, term I have asked our ministry and program leaders to keep in mind as they embark on their studies, activities and events for 2017 - 18; “sacrifice” will be something to give us focus and something to build around within eve-rything from Sunday School and GOYA to my homilies and our adult education efforts.

Months ago, I offered our leaders some quotes and concepts to think about. I’d like to offer more here. thought, emotion and more are poured out during this activity for the sake of our love of God, for the sake of our relationship with Him. Further, note how the prayer then affirms God’s ac-ceptance of this sacrifice if it is offered with our whole heart.

Empty praises and actions don’t add up to much. What we say, do and offer as a sacrifice must be powered by the love within our hearts.

Thirdly and finally, this portion of the prayer bookends with the earlier as-sertion that only God is holy by affirming that we are sinners. Even so, we ask that God accept what is being offered at His holy altar of sacrifice.

Remember, to sin is to be off the mark; God doesn’t stop loving us be-cause we are off the mark—we always remain his children. It’s up to us to be more and more like Him each day. And this entails sacrifice, sacrificial living. In fact, we may rightly consider our very lives as sacrificial offerings at His altar … a place of unending love, compassion and salvation.

I hope my insufficient words at least mark a beginning to our parish-wide meditation and conversation on the topic of Sacrifice. And there’s much more to come within all our 2017 - 18 ministry and program offerings. By God’s grace, may our efforts bear much fruit!

Is the feastday of our beloved semi-

nary in Brookline.

Reveals the extent of Christ ’s suffer-

ing for our sake and the depth of His love.

Reminds us that we are called to

“take up” our own crosses and to follow Him.

Challenges us to view the Cross not

as jewelry or just another symbol—but a way of life and central to our identity.

Come and See 3

Marriage in the Greek Orthodox Church was very special for me. If you share this experience in your back-ground, you too surely recall the won-derful memories and power of that day! While many of us have gone on to become active Stewards within the church, some of our newlyweds begin their lives together knowing that their church will always be there when the timing is just right—but not always knowing the way to connect and become involved.

Saint Philip is at its best when we are all able to share and grow together. To help this along, we are planning a special gathering for our younger couples on Oct. 29—a time to re-flect on where they’ve come since their marriages, to meet new friends and connect with their Church. We look forward to welcoming back all of our young couples and to experience the fellowship and love that we have in each other and our church. Please look for your personal invitation in the mail, and join us.

In addition to this gathering, we would like to plan other small get-togethers at the homes of our faithful, providing paths for friendship and deeper involvement within the Church. Interested in hosting or attending? Contact me any-time: [email protected].

Every Member —Jorge Panteli Dome Work to Commence!

This month, work will start on the dome and the two towers at long last. The work will last about a month’s time. The dome and towers

will once again shine and serve as a beacon of faith. The Dome Committee (part of our greater Every Member Cam-paign) did an outstanding job of developing and executing the selection of a contractor to complete this important task. Please thank the committee members (Ed Marden, George Eftimiou, Bill Polychronopoulos, Greg Danas and Doug Philipon) the next time you see them. More to come when the project starts!

Also, I kindly remind you that Every Member is still very much active—and is as important as it was when we first launched it back in 2013. We have many critical projects that will be de-tailed in months to come. Please consider donating.

Teaching Divine Liturgy —Oct. 22

Our children, parents and all parishioners often come to Fr. Alex with questions about the Divine Lit-urgy concerning the vessels we use, vestments, prayers, hymns, symbolism and more. To help with our understand-ing, we will offer a “Teaching Divine Lit-urgy” on the 22nd.

Our Sunday Schoolers will remain in Church on this day—the entire Church will be our classroom!

We hope this low-key event will help build friendship among our JOY children and families. Par-ents are welcome to stow their lunches in the walk-in refrigerator in the hall. Also, don’t forget play clothes to change into. See you then!

Come and See 5

For A Child’s 1st Day of School

Dear God, here is (name), ready for her first day at school. She has been counting the days. She is so thrilled. Be with her today when she goes into un-familiar rooms, when she sees new faces (make them kind faces!), when she stands in the lunch line, when she is on the playground. Keep her close to You as she learns and grows and makes friends. Protect her from harm. Watch over her on the way to and from school. And as she becomes part of a larger world, help me to let her go and her to gain experience that she will need to become a responsible part of Your creation. Amen.

Saint Sophia and her three daughters—Faith,

Hope & Love—were from Italy and gave their

lives for God in the year 126, during the reign

of the Emperor Hadrian. Faith was twelve

years old, Hope, ten and Love, only nine;

even though they were children, the laws of

the empire were firm: if they did not repent of

their Christian Faith, the penalty was death.

After their executions, Saint Sophia mourned

at their grave for three days, where she also

died. Because of her courageous endurance

in the face of her daughter’s suffering, she is also counted a martyr

by the Church. All four saints are remembered on September 17.

Getting Practical: Did you know that the Orthodox Christian

Church recognizes child saints? As the lives of these beloved

saints indicate, alongside adults, children have bravely and

faithfully given up their lives for Christ throughout the centuries

of Christendom, from the earliest times to the most recent. This

month, print out the icon of this faithful saint family for your

children; show it to them, share their story and remind your

children that their contributions to the Church are real, inspira-

tional and powerful.

In all the years I've been going to MBC, from 2010 to 2017, it has been a relax-ing, fun experience I've always looked forward to. When I was very young, be-

fore I started going, I was skeptical. But during my first week, I took in the beautiful Orthros and Vespers services, had fun at the ses-sions where we learned about our faith, talked to others about our lives, swam in the lake and played cards on the Rec. Hall porch. I was in love.

And now, seven years later, it's only gotten better. Camp is a different, more special kind of vacation where you can forget about all your prob-lems, relax in the presence of people with whom you have so much in common, and refresh your mind while learning about the Greek Orthodox faith. I've made so many un-expected friends. The experiences I've had at the Metropolis of Bos-ton Camp will remain with me for the rest of my life.

Family Night w/Coach Kearns Sep. 22, 6 - 8 pm

Boston-based Kevin Kearns is one of the premier strength and conditioning experts in the US—as well as author of Always Picked Last, an in-spiring book highlighting the problem of bullying and the ability of all children to over-come various obstacles. Coach Kearns will discuss his book, share his passion for fit-ness and engage all our youth and parents in some fun activities. JOY, GOYA, Sunday School students, parents and all parish-ioners are warmly invited.

Dinner will be provided, but please bring a drink or dessert. Contact Brandy Chetsas by Sep. 20 to confirm your of-fering: [email protected].

Our parish has been truly blessed over the last four years to have George Karakantas serving as Choir Di-rector. Even before this latest stint, George faithfully di-

rected for multiple periods in the past and has been a dedicated member of the Saint Philip Choir since the opening of the church. Last Pascha, George made the decision to pass the torch, and we were able to honor him dur-ing a presentation on June 11. Further, we are grateful that

***********, a Choir member and one of our chanters, has agreed to accept this vital ministry role. Brian brings an exceptional background in music training to the role, a great amount of faith and his well-known opti-mistic and kindly disposition.

We offer a warm welcome to ***** in his new capacity as Choir Director, wishing him many years of faithful service. And we honor our dear friend George,

thanking him for his steadfast ministry!

ship Ministry, a Sundae Bar offered by our Sunday School and a special entertainer for our children.

Our Stewardship Committee welcomes this oppor-tunity to celebrate another year of offering our time, talent and treasure at Saint Philip!

Women’s Prayer Group & Bible Study

We have a true treasure in the Saint Methodios Faith & Heritage Center in Contoocook, NH. Not only is it the setting

for our Metropolis’ highly successful camping program, but it is a resource for all of our ministries and parishion-ers to utilize. We engaged the center for our April 2016 Parish Lenten Retreat. What’s next? Ideas from our minis-try leaders and all parishioners are welcome.

Contact Fr. Alex with your idea for 2017 - 18!

Metropolis Retreat Center A Resource for All

Join us for our fall series based on Clint Eastwood’s Gran Torino. Led by Fr. Alex, we’ll explore themes like sacri-fice, vengeance, forgiveness and hope, as well as the possibility of engaging media and art for the benefit of our own faith. Refreshments will be served each night, including pop-corn and candy at the movie view-

ing on the 21st.

The series is free. All are welcome. We’ll gather 7 - 8:15 pm (except

Sept. 21, running 7 - 9 pm).

Fact or fiction. Herbal supplements are promoted as healthy, harmless, effective, and "natural.” The Federal

Drug Administration considers such products dietary supplements, but does not regulate them. The ingredients and their strength may vary widely and, in some instances, may interact adversely with other substances or prescribed medications. So be a savvy consumer and do your homework, and inform your doctor if you are taking supplements. Questions about supplements or other health issues? Contact Kathey Richo: [email protected].
