FEATURED DJS

FLYERFACE BEHIND THE MIC

Rocharder DJs' T-ROCBY KNOWA LOGIC "THE INTERVIEWER"

T-ROC, TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE ROCHARDER DJS.THE ROCHARDER DJS, MAN, THAT’S MY MODEL PROJECT I’M WORKING ON

THAT’S GOING SO WELL. I’M REAL PROUD OF THEM. WE’RE BREAKING RECORDS IN MARKETS LIKE ATLANTA, TEXAS, ALABAMA, AND NEW YORK. SO YOU’LL DEFINITELY BEING HEARING MORE ABOUT THEM THIS YEAR.

ONCE AGAIN IT’S BEEN A PLEASURE RAPPING WITH YOU T-ROC. DO YOU HAVE A WEBSITE OR MYSPACE PAGE WHERE THE PEOPLE CAN GET AT YOU?

YES, BUT FIRST I WANT TO THANK GOD AND MY CREW FOR HAVING MY BACK. BUT YOU CAN HIT US ON TWITTER @DJTROCATLANTA AND @ROCHARDERDJS. ROCHARDERDJS.NING.COM AND YOU CAN FIND US ROCHARDERMAGAZINE.COM

WHAT’S GOOD T-ROC?IT’S ALL GOOD MAN. I CAN’T COMPLAIN.

HOW DID YOU GET CAUGHT UP IN THIS MUSIC BUSINESS? WHY DIDN’T YOU JUST GET A NINE TO FIVE LIKE NORMAL PEOPLE?

WELL, IT WOULD SEEM LIKE THAT’S THE THING TO DO. I THINK A LOT OF TIMES PEOPLE IN THIS INDUSTRY LOOK BACK AND ASK THEMSELVES THAT QUESTION. BUT FOR ME, I STARTED OUT AS A MUSICIAN, PLAYING DRUMS AT A YOUNG AGE IN A LIVE BAND. THEN I STARTED PROMOTING SHOWS IN MY HOMETOWN OMAHA, NEBRASKA AND DISCOVERED A NICHE. WE WOULD DO CONCERTS AND BENEFIT EVENTS FOR THE NEEDY, AND THE LINES WOULD BE WRAPPED AROUND THE BUILDING EVERY TIME. WE WOULD SHUT THE CITY DOWN SO MUCH THAT I FELT IN ORDER TO GROW WE NEEDED TO MOVE TO ANOTHER MARKET THAT COULD COMPLIMENT OUR BIG GRIND. I LOOKED AT CALI AND ATLANTA AND CHOSE THE “A.”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN HERE NOW?I’VE BEEN HERE FOR ABOUT 13 YEARS. I STARTED OUT AT A LITTLE HOLE

IN THE WALL ON BANKHEAD CALLED THE POOLE PALACE. I MADE THE OWNER VERY RICH (LAUGHS). HE REBUILT THE CLUB AND BOUGHT TWO MORE DOWNTOWN PLUS THE SILVER FOX. THAT WAS AROUND THE TIME THE SNAP MOVEMENT BEGAN. SEE, WHEN I GOT HERE THE UNDERGROUND SCENE WAS LIKE ANY OTHER MARKET IN THE SINCE THAT THERE WERE NO REAL OUTLETS FOR THE MUSIC. BACK THEN THE MAJOR ARTIST WERE CATS LIKE OUTKAST AND YOUNG BLOODS AS FAR AS RAP GOES. I USE TO PLAY THE RECORDS AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO KEEP GRINDING. GUYS WHO PROBABLY WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN HEARD OF WITH THEIR FRUITY LOOPS BEATS WERE CREATING A BUZZ NOW. THERE WERE A FEW OTHER DJS PLAYING THE MUSIC, BUT I WAS AT THE FOREFRONT. BUT IF I HAD KNOWN THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW, I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON TOP OF IT IN ANOTHER WAY. I MEAN IT EXPLODED NATIONWIDE. I WAS READING ARTICLES IN NEW YORK PAPERS, BOSTON, MIAMI AND SEEING IT HAPPEN ALL OVER TV. ARTIST LIKE YOLA, D4L, THE FRANCHISE BOYZ WERE ON MTV! SO AT ONE POINT IF YOU WERE LOOKING FOR TALENT YOU HAD TO COME BY (ON) MY NIGHT. CATS LIKE JOHNNIE CABBELL USE TO COME OUT TO SCOUT FOR ACTS AND THEN INVESTORS GOT INVOLVED AND MADE IT LOOK BIGGER THAN IT REALLY WAS. THAT’S WHEN THE LABELS STARTED CALLING AND DROPPING BUDGETS DOWN HERE.

T-ROC SINCE YOU’RE KNOWN TO BE ONE OF THE FEW TRUE RECORD BREAKERS IN ATLANTA, WHY IS IT SO HARD FOR AN INDIE ARTIST TO GET A SINGLE SPINNING IN ROTATION? IS IT THAT MUCH GARBAGE OUT THERE OR IS IT THE POLITICS INVOLVED?

I THINK THEY TOOK THE FUN OUT OF IT. THERE’S NOT REALLY THAT MUCH POLITICS. PEOPLE WILL PLAY THE GAME OF POLITICS, I THINK, BECAUSE SOME OF THE ARTISTS WHETHER THEY HAVE BUDGETS OR NOT ACT LIKE THEY HAVE MADE IT AND WANT THAT TREATMENT FROM EVERYONE. THEN YOU HAVE THE ONES WHO FORGET TO MAKE MUSIC FOR THE CROWD AND NOT YOURSELF. THEY RAP TO EACH OTHER ABOUT WHAT THEY GOT MATERIAL WISE AND NOT TO CREATE A FOLLOWING. THEY FORGET ABOUT THE IMPORTANT PEOPLE LIKE THE DJS, PROMOTERS, CLUB OWNERS AND THE CROWD. THAT’S THE BIGGEST PROBLEM. THEY USE TO “LEAN WIT IT, ROCK WIT IT” AND HAVE THE CROWD ON BOARD, BUT NOW THEY’RE TOO SERIOUS.

O nce again, I found myself at a concert/RECORD POOL! And the reason I say “record pool” is because the opening acts performed

as if they were attending one! The night began at a packed venue in Atlanta, Georgia as the artists prepared to take the stage one by one. The show was to start promptly at 11:00pm for the six Indie artists scheduled to shine for the moment. But, by the time the third artist took the stage, it was already almost 1 am in the morning because each artist decided to give a mini concert lled with UNKNOWN music! The venue was less than 1/3 packed and the featured artist still hadn’t made it to the stage. This has got to STOP!

How many times do I have to tell Indie artists, “When opening for Atlanta, all you need to perform is your SINGLE?” The crowd is dissatis ed because they came out to see the headliner, not YOU! So, if you are blessed with an opportunity by the promoter, take advantage of it by promoting ONLY your SINGLE. Remember, the crowd is not your personal A&R and when you perform 3 or more songs, you’re taking it TOO FAR!”

Now let me address my rising stars that are just getting into the game. Here’s some old school advice for every new school cat, “Prior to submitting your song to a DJ, P-L-E-A-S-E be sure to either get it mixed well or simply MASTER IT (if you can).”

I was doing this show in Jacksonville, Florida about 3 months ago; the crowd was very responsive to tracks I spun. I kept topping the last track played so the crowd was all mine and HYPED UP! Well, I decided to throw in a “wild card” dance number and threw in a CD from my boi that just got put on. Needless to say, the song on the CD sounded TERRIBLE!! It was as if it were recorded on a New York subway platform while the E train came into a screeching stop. I had to SHUT IT DOWN, quick! I spent the night trying to recover from the silence and confusion felt throughout the venue for that hot minute.

I was PISSED OFF!!! See, I’ve been doing this for 20 years and during all those years I’ve broken too many artists to count. The reason why they are still successful today is because they listened to

me and the ones that are nowhere to be found today, probably still have a BIG PROBLEM with digesting good advice!

I want to take this moment and shout out my Indie artists that are going real HARD right now! Artists such as Montana Da Mack, Lil Hot, Ducktape Entertainment, Brock 125, Hustle House, Swazy Baby, Papa Duck, Certi ed, Maaly, and Frank Lenny. One Love!!

Be sure to hit up www.teambiggarankin.com and my twitter for more information about upcoming events.

Signing out,

BIgga Rankin

While performing at a talent show we met Divine Stevens and he was like, “Hey, I wanna work with y’all.” And we started building from there. It was an overnight dream that happened for us.

SO HOW ABOUT YOU, JAZZY? HOW DID YOU GET INTO ENTERTAINING?Jazzy- I'm from the South-side. College Park, to be exact. But my

family has a history of performing. My mother, grandmother and her mother were all singers. So I guess you can say it was in my blood.

AND YOU, SHAN Q?Shan Q- I'm from the West-side. Bankhead, T.I. them, Shawty Lo, you

know that side of town. I went to a performing arts high school where I took ballet, dance, jazz but also played the piccolo and ute. After high school I was fortunate enough to tour across the country with Ne-yo, Ciara, and others, being a back up dancer. I met Divine when I was younger, but after touring we met again and started making solid moves in the right direction, formed the group and we've been rocking it out every since.

YOU LADIES ARE IN, WHAT MOST WOULD CONSIDER, A GOOD POSITION BEING SIGNED TO UPFRONT MEGATAINMENT, HOME OF KONVICK MUSIC AND SUPER STARS AKON AND T PAIN. HOW DID THIS SITUATION COME ABOUT AND HOW WAS YOUR GRIND AFFECTED BY THIS RELATIONSHIP?

Jazzy- Like we mentioned earlier, when we met Divine he was like, “Yo, I think ya'll are dope. I got this label going on and so on.” So next thing you know we're in the studio creating a sound, an image, and got more familiar with our voices. It was like an overnight success. It’s still surreal to us. Just yesterday it’s like we were in high school and now we're here on the charts. So it has been some experience, but we're so busy grinding we can’t really feel the changes like that. I guess

we will when the money start rolling in, but it’s all fun right now.

NOW, BEING THAT YOU GIRLS ARE A FEMALE TRIO, COMING OUT OF ATLANTA WITH HELLA STYLE AND SKILLS, DO SOME CONSIDER YOU THE NEXT TLC? AND IF SO HOW DOES THAT MAKE YOU FEEL?

Jazzy- Yeah we hear that a lot, but consider that to be a compliment because they paved the way, and in a way have given us the blueprint on how to move in the industry. But we really want to make our on

mark. We're hard workers and will do 50 shows if we have to. We want to make the people that believe in us from our parents to Divine, our street team and the people, like you, who interview us proud.

I'VE HEARD YOUR MUSIC AND I THINK Y’ALL BOUT TO MAKE SO MUCH NOISE IN THE GAME. BEING THAT I'M A FLORIDA BOY, MY FAVORITE IS “SCRUB THE GROUND.” BUT "GO CRAZY" PRODUCED BY J MIZZLE FEAT. FLO-RIDA IS BANGING! HOW WAS IT WORKING WITH THOSE TWO ON THE SINGLE?

Chanel- 305, Dade County, J Mizzle and Flo-rida what's up guys. J Mizzle is a fool (laughs). They were both great to work with and thank you both for blessing the track. We actually have a remix with Flo-rida and PitBull on that one and that’s on the charts.

NOW YOU LADIES KNOW THEY'RE GONNA EXPECT YOU GUYS TO BE ROLL MODELS FOR THE YOUNGER GENERATION. ARE YOU UP FOR THAT?

Krave- Well being that we are still kind of young so it's a little scary. There's a lot of pressure all the way around with that subject, but we are focused and willing to step up to the plate for our fans and peers.

SO LAST BUT NOT LEAST, WHERE CAN THE READER KEEP UP WITH YOU GIRLS?Krave- They can check us at Twitter @kraveworldwide and on

youtube type in Divine Stevens to see our behind the scene footage and videos. And call the radio stations and request GO Crazy from your girls Krave.

Actor, comedian, host. Man, you’re all over the place, doing it big. Before winning the Bay Area Black Comedy championship in 2002, what were some of the things you and up and coming comedians in that area had to do for exposure, and how did things ease up afterwards?

Man there’s so much you have to do before people start to know about you. I was in the Navy for eight years. I was on active duty but I was still doing my comedy. So it was like my job. In the day, I was the Navy guy, but at night I was slinging them jokes. I’ve been blessed to be noticed whenever I was doing my thing. One of the rst people to notice me was George Lopez. He took me on the road with him under his wings and I was able to learn a lot from him. He was selling out shows long before most people knew him nationally. But before I won in 2002, I lost in 01. But what I like to tell up and coming comedians is that it’s not always about the win. Because that’s the year I met Cedric the Entertainer’s manager. And we vibed pretty good on some dude level. He was like. “Man, I’m going to hook you up.” People say that all the time but he really did. He called me two weeks later and at that time Cedric had the Bud Lite commercials going. That was when I got to really see what this talent could become. But you know the grind doesn’t really change but you can’t let it beat you. It gets rough and if you’re not made for it, you will be swallowed by it. I’ve seen people who were funnier than me, but gave up before their blessings.

Do you feel the comedy industry has changed any since the time it attracted you to want a career in it? If so, expand on the good and the bad.

I don’t think the game is any di erent now than it was 50 years ago. We tend to get exposed to di erent things as we go up the latter, but I think it’s the same. There are more opportunities for blacks now, but with that comes new pitfalls too. But I look at comedy as the last true form of expression. When I’m doing my stand up, I’m the writer, producer, director and I love doing all of it.

Now let’s talk about the Monique show for a minute, if you don’t mind. First of all, since this is my rst time meeting you in person, congratulations on the show and your position there. Has life changed any since landing this gig or is it the typical every day lifestyle of Rodney Perry?

Well yes and no. I was already starting to feel the human change. You know when people start recognizing you. I have been on Comic View enough times for that to happen

now. But there is still a disconnect at that stage because you have some people that remember you for one thing and some for other things. But they haven’t really made that full connection yet and that’s what the show helped me achieve. But I’m really happy doing the show and I love working with Monique. We worked together in the past on a radio show she had and when she asked me if I wanted to take this ride with her I was like hell yea! (Laughs) Let’s roll! I have a cousin in the industry who was the host of The Queens of Comedy, is still known for pulling her wig o on national TV, and she has more recently appeared on the show.

What happens to take you from the limelight back to fewer appearances and how do you plan to maneuver around that?

It’s crazy but I have always been a student of that. I don’t just look at the people making it happen, but also the people taking losses. For example: Miss Laura. She was at the top of her game with The Queens of Comedy and who knows what happened. Real life kicks in, a death could occur, a birth or anything. These things can change a persons perspective of what they’re dong and why. Because this is a very sel sh endeavor and it takes a lot of sacri ce to see it through. It could be a lack of a strong support team or any number of things from my observance.

Well Rodney it’s been my pleasure sitting here conversing with you. Can you let us know where can we nd out what moves or appearances you might be making in the near future?

Well I’m online everywhere. I’m old school so I still have a MySpace. You can follow me on Twitter @rodneyperry, RodneyPerry.com and my Ning site is rodneyperrylive.ning. But (use) Rodney Perry and you can nd my Facebook and everything. Thank you to for having me here and I too enjoyed myself.

now. But there is still a disconnect at that stage because you have some people that remember you for one thing and

In my young years I took pride in the fact that luck

was called a lady. In fact, there were so few public acknowledgments of the female presence that I felt personally honored whenever nature and large ships were referred to as feminine. But as I matured, I began to resent being considered a sister to a changeling as ckle as luck, as aloof as an ocean, and as frivolous as nature. The phrase "A woman always has the right to change her mind" played so aptly into the negative image of the female that I made myself a victim to an unwavering decision. Even if I made an inane and stupid choice, I stuck by it rather than "be like a woman and change my mind."

Being a woman is hard work. Not without joy and even ecstasy, but still relentless, unending work. Becoming an old female may require only being born with certain genitalia, inheriting long-living genes and the fortune not to be run over by an out-of-control truck, but to become and remain a woman command the existence and employment of genius.

The woman who survives intact and happy must be at once tender and tough. She must have convinced herself, or be in the unending process of convincing herself, that she, her values, and her choices are important. In a time and world where males hold sway and control, the pressure upon women to yield their rights-of-way is tremendous. And it is under those very circumstances that the woman's toughness must be in evidence.

She must resist considering herself a lesser version of her male counterpart. She is not a sculptress, poetess, authoress, Jewess, Negress, or even (now rare) in

university parlance a rectoress. If she is the thing, then for her own sense of self and for the education of the ill-informed she must insist with rectitude in being the thing and in being called the thing.

A rose by any other name may smell as sweet, but a woman called by a devaluing name will only be weakened by the misnomer. She will need to prize her tenderness and be able to display it at appropriate times in order to prevent toughness from gaining total authority and to avoid becoming a mirror image of those men who value power above life, and control over love.

It is imperative that a woman keeps her sense of humor intact and at the ready. She must see, even if only in secret, that she is the funniest, looniest woman in her world, which she should also see as being the most absurd world of all times. It has been said that laughter is therapeutic and amiability lengthens the life span. Women should be tough, tender, laugh as much as possible, and livelong lives. The struggle for equality continues unabated, and the woman warrior who is armed with wit and courage will be among the rst to celebrate victory.

Atl anta, you have just entered the Drama-Free Zone–NO HATERS ALLOWED! Check in with me monthly, here at Flyer Promo Now Atlanta, to get

my top ve countdown of the most positive and inspiring current entertainment and lifestyle trends. Here at the Drama-Free Zone, we check the negative press at the door and give props to those deserving of it.

Lately, I have come to really appreciate living, understanding that we only get one lifetime to get things right. We cannot a ord to waste the limited seconds we get on this earth. There is no rewind or reset button, so it is vital that we live each day to the fullest, maximizing our talents and dreams. Every one of us has a dream, a goal, or some unachieved desire. Some of us have more than one. The time is now to make your dreams a reality simply because tomorrow is not promised. So, in this issue of Flyer Promo Now, we’re counting down my top ve rules to living your dreams. Let’s start the countdown…

#5 Get Organized. Organization is key to achieving any objective. Organization is more than being tidy; it includes order, having a map, game plan,

or strategy that begins where you currently are and ends at your dream. In your process of becoming organized make sure to de ne your goals and milestones, create a schedule, identify your resources and needs, and anticipate setbacks and obstacles. As the old adage goes, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”

#4 Say Goodbye To Procrastination. Everybody say it with me, “Procrastination is the enemy!” Procrastination (or putting o things that can

be done now until later) is the reason why most people never see their dreams come to life. There will always be a reason or excuse why you should wait until a later time, but excuses do not produce results. Next time you are tempted to procrastinate, force yourself to do it anyways. Eventually you will learn the art of self-discipline and will be glad you did as you see your dream come to past.

#3 Speak Life. How can you achieve anything if everything that comes out of your mouth is negative? The power of life and death resides

in your words. You can choose to speak words that will edify you and empower you to believe in yourself, or you can speak words that kill your hopes and dash your dreams. If you want to see yourself winning, don’t be afraid to say it. “I am successful. I will make it. I can do this!”

#2 Let Go. Sometimes we can’t experience good things because we have too many bad things in the way. Make room for your dreams by getting

rid of all the junk that will not allow your dreams to thrive. It

may be certain friends or people, possibly a habit or behavior, often a mindset or belief. Whatever it is, it is time to let go. Don’t let anyone or anything negative stand in the way of your joy, peace, and ful llment.

And #1…Make It Happen! Most of us are

guilty of this simple crime: Waiting for someone to hand us our dreams. Sorry

to be the bearer of bad new, but nine times out of ten, it’s not going to happen. We have to get out there and make it happen for ourselves. The more we wait and expect someone else to give us what we want, the more of our power we place in someone else’s hands. We must be willing to take back our authority and responsibility over our own lives and make things happen for ourselves. Get out there, hit the pavement running, and don’t come back until you have received and achieved everything you want and need.

Until the next time, keep it positive!A’ndrea
