Pastor’s DeskFriends,

It’s been a very busy summer at FPC. In June, we sent 55 people to the PAM Worship and Music Conference at Mo-Ranch, followed by our high school youth heading to Senior High Celebration. In addition, our elementary age children attended Grace Day Camp at Grace Presbyterian Village, bringing smiles to the faces of residents there and enjoying cooking classes, tea parties, card games, and learning about various vocations. Four of our confirmands traveled with their parents to Kansas City to the headquarters of water.org to give a presentation about their annual service project. At the end of June, eleven of our young families participated in the Family Mission Trip in Shreveport, LA, serving with partners in the community who work with First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport. The next week, we sent a mission team back to Ciudad Juarez for the first time in five years to join our Presbyterian partners there, working to expand their community center and offer Vacation Bible School to dozens of children from the neighborhood around the church. They reported a safe week with no incidents. We are thankful for their safe return.

Last week our 10th-12th grade youth had Community Ministries Week, serving with our mission partners around the city, working as camp counselors in our Summer Day Camp, and serving dinner at the Bridge each night while living at the church. While the high schoolers served at home, our junior high students headed to Mo-Ranch for Junior High Jubilee. This week, many of us will travel down to Mo-Ranch for the 39th annual All Church Retreat, and next week our youth head to Montreat, NC to attend that youth conference with over 1,000 Presbyterian youth from around the country. The last week of July brings Vacation Bible School for our elementary schoolers along with 6th Grade Mission Week.

In the midst of a summer where Presbyterians are making news about decisions made at the General Assembly over matters of polity and how the denomination handles its investments, the daily work of mission and ministry continues at FPC. These kind of things seldom make the newspapers, so I wanted you to read about it in our newspaper! We could not do all this without countless volunteers who give of their time, in many cases vacation time from their jobs, to help make these things happen. We could not do it without willing participants choosing to spend their money on faith forming experiences. And we could not do it without your financial contributions that underwrite expenses beyond personal participation. So thank you for making this possible!

It is a joy and a privilege to be part of a congregation that “gets it” when it comes to mission and ministry. Thank you all for all you do to make FPC such a special place to be.

In Christ,

Summer Visiting YouthWEEK OF JUNE 23

The third week in June, First Presbyterian Church hosted a visiting youth group from Webster, TX. The youth group spent their busy week helping out with the Summer Kid’s Club at the church and serving dinner at the Bridge by preparing trays of food and pouring water. The youth group spent their mornings in different locations, including the Stewpot, the food bank, and a residential facility for seniors. At these locations, the group packed bags of trail mix, organized boxes of food to be donated at the North Texas Food Bank, and visited with the residents of Grace Presbyterian Village, learning more about the residents’ pasts and the cats that live in the facility! On Friday, the group led a Bible study at the Stewpot and assisted the Kid’s Club with an in-house field trip hosted by Bricks 4 Kidz.

Family Mission TripThe Family Mission Team (34 people in 11 families) thanks everyone for their support. The team was able to pass on $2,500 in contribu-tions to the four agencies where they volunteered – Chimp Haven, The Providence House, The Fuller Center, and the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank. They packed 3,800 pounds of food, lead music, science, art, and games for kids at the shelter, picked and prepared food for Chimps, and cut a shipping container full of trim for houses to 8ft lengths. The team also enjoyed worship, fellowship, and fun together living in community at First Presbyterian Church of Shreveport.

It’s About Time: Senior High CelebrationBY JOHN CLIFFORD AND SAM BALLARD

The following are the reflections of one of our youth and sponsors who attended Youth Celebration at Mo-Ranch the week of June 22. The them for the week came from the opening verses in Ecclesiastes 3.

Celebration is the annual summer youth conference for older teens in the four states of the Synod of the Sun—Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas.

SB: Getting to Mo-Ranch started out this year with a little bus company drama, but it kinda adds to the crazy fun of the ride down, and the youth are always very patient waiting for their bus to arrive or while having a tire changed. The week at Mo is always a blast filled with lots of laughter and fun in the sun. JC: Youth Celebration was a blast this year. We had an awesome time hanging out with friends by the river, or just laying around back in our rooms. It was really cool getting to know people from all across the state and out of state in our small group meetings. The small group leaders really did a great job of keeping everything running smoothly. SB: And our own Jennifer Giles did an outstanding job as Recreation Leader for the conference. We truly have a great group of young people at our church and I am fortunate to see them grow in God, as well as bond more with each other on trips like this one. JC: I’d like to give a big thanks to all the sponsors—George Pittenger, Sam Ballard, and Gail Barron. Y’all were fantastic, and the other youth and I had an awesome time getting to know you better. I can’t wait for next year.

Juarez Mission Team RecapA SUCCESSFUL MISSION TRIP BY LIZ ZSOHAR

Early morning of Saturday, June 28, a van with Bonnie Edwards, David Johns, Eunice Fer-nandez, Lues Queme and his daughter Lauren, Jazmine Dowe and Liz Zsohar left FPC on the long drive to El Paso. In El Paso we met up with Roger and Susan Dennison and Sarah Barger from Lindale and Rich Mackey from Van, who had driven out and Jo Frances who had flown. After dinner with a delegation from Juarez, the 12 of us headed across the border to Juarez, Mexico, and the Toribeo Family Center which would be our “home” for the next week.

Sunday morning we attended the church service at Verdad y Redencion. Part of the service was a re-dedication of the sanctuary of the church which FPC had built. The service was very memorable and ended with a fiesta brunch in the basement of the church. The afternoon was spent with shopping for the sewing project and visiting a busy mall. The number of people in the mall and outside in the streets was giving an indication of how much the safety in Juarez had improved. Later we had an orientation at the Center for the schedule for the coming week and preparations were made for the week’s work.

Our four day work week started on Monday. There was painting of the rooms of the Day Care Center at Toribeo and the dining room, sewing with the local women in the morning and afternoon, VBS (2 afternoons at Toribeo and 2 afternoons at Redencion), and construction of an 8 foot high wall to further the security of the Center after an apartment was built next to the outside walls of the Center. We were helped with the construction by three local church members whom we had hired to help us. Other local men and especially women worked alongside with us all week.

We enjoyed lunch and dinner prepared by local ladies. In the evenings, preparations were made for the next day. Each day started with a devotional after breakfast and each evening ended with a devotional, discussion and reflections on the day’s events.

On Friday, July 4, we toured the area, visiting the colonias where we had built several houses in the past, visiting the Socorro school, touring the Rey de Gloria children’s home and the center at Tocando Puerto. The day ended with a community Fiesta at the Toribeo Center and the final celebration with over 100 children and their parents who had attended VBS during the week. The highlight of the evening was the piñata which each child had the opportunity to have a swing at. The event ended with another wonderful meal and visitation with all those in attendance.

Sunset found us on the roof of the Center waiting to see the fireworks in El Paso, some 5 miles away. Thus ended a wonderful week of working, renewing friendships and making new friends. All week long we had felt safe and secure and we came away with the feeling that we were all returning next year.

Reflections from Mo-Ranch/PAM ParticipantsThere was certainly not a shortage of things to do for the 55 participants from FPC Dallas at the Mo-Ranch/PAM Worship & Music Conference. Participants had MANY course offerings to choose from. Adults participated in Bible Study (with Catherine Foster), Adult Choir, Advanced and Intermediate Handbells, Visual Arts, instrumental ensemble, and John Bell’s lectures. Children rang chimes, sang in the children’s choir, had Bible Study and an Orff class, Arts & Crafts, and plenty of swimming time! Youth participants sang in the youth choir, rang in the beginning bells group, enjoyed youth activities and Bible study, and evening prayer each night.

All conferees gathered for daily worship and FPC was well represented in the leader-ship with Sally LeFevre, Carol Herriage, John Clifford, Grace Coleman, Drew Echols, Diana Taylor, Joe Clifford, and Josh Taylor all serving as worship leaders.

Each night we enjoyed a variety of evening activities including John Bell’s BIG SING (a highlight of the week), Tuesday’s variety show where a number of FPC Dallas folks dis-played their talents, and Thursday night’s festival concert where we shared the work of our time together.

It was a FULL week with many blessings, much fellowship, and terrific worship.

Here are the reflections of a few of the participants:

“I had never had been to Mo-Ranch before – but was excited to go to since this session was all about music! I participated in both sessions of handbells – intermediate & advanced – directed by the incomparable David Harris, director of the Raleigh Ringers. What an intense learning experience – literally immersion in new music with just a few days to learn it before per-forming. All the other different musical groups performing were most impressive and unforgettable. Now that I know what a great experience it was, I’ll be signing up for 2015” - Vanessa Myers (Chancel Handbell Choir Member)

“This was my first experience at MoPAM. As a choir member and amateur musician, it was delightful to be around so much exceptional talent. The lectures of John Bell were humorous and insightful. The daily choir rehearsals gave me a chance to meet other choristers from different places and fellowship with FPC choir members. I also learned some new choral techniques from Dr. Pearl Shangkuan, the adult choir director. On Thursday night it all culminated in a wonderful and heartwarming festival of exceptional music. I didn’t want to come home.” – Lisa Maxwell (Chancel Choir Member)

“The chimes teacher was nice and enthusiastic.” “I liked the orff teacher (Diana) because she has taught before and was very good at it.” “My favorite songs from choir were I Have Touched the Face of God and Praise Can Be Like Children.” – Lydia Herriage (Children’s Choir Member)

“I loved swimming in the pool.” “I also liked doing orff.” “I enjoyed performing on the orff instruments for the final concert.” “I also liked the talent show.” – Reuben Herriage (Children’s Choir Member and Talent Show Breakdancer)

Walking 2 Destiny EventMORE THAN ONE THOUSAND SHOES!

The Stewpot’s “Kid’s Club” and “Venturing Crew” participated in the sixth annual Juneteenth “Walking 2 Destiny” celebration held this year at Northway Christian Church. Along with fun activities and lunch, children and youth from The Stewpot, Family Gateway, Communities Foundation, Kids U, Oasis de Esperanza, Trinity River Mission, and the Wilkinson Center all received brand new Nike shoes from the Memno-syne Foundation. The goal of the event was to send an empowering message of freedom for all people.

Everything’s Up to Date in Kansas City! The weekend of June 6 ushered in a new experience for our younger youth.

The 2014 Confirmation Class, along with their moms and Camilla Ballard travelled to Kansas City. Their purpose was to visit the national headquarters of water.org, the non-profit agency that the class had chosen to support for their service project this year.

Members Ean Homer, Lila Ingrum, Joey Martini, and Ashlan O’Brien worked diligently on their presentation for the staff of the organization. They de-tailed how they had chosen water.org and their plans to involve the church in supporting the project. They explained the history of Confirmation Class service projects in our church. Joey Martini shared about how he had cho-sen his birthday party to serve as a fund-raiser for the charity. The class presented the staff with a mock check representing the over $800.00 they had raised to help bring sources of clean water and toilets to people in need around the world. In return, the staff gave a detailed explanation of their work—how the organization began and how it has advanced.

In addition to the Monday morning spent at the headquarters, the group enjoyed a wide variety of other opportunities including worshiping at Village Church on Sunday and with the nuns at the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles priory on Monday afternoon. Youth and adults also toured the national WWI museum, took in a movie at Union Station--which was built in 1914, and had a great time getting to know each other better at an unhur-ried pace. A truly memorable time was had by all.

Security AlertPolice believe that a smash-and-grab gang has returned to North Texas this summer. As reported by Eva-Marie Ayala of The Dallas Morning News on July 2, 2104: “Gang members are known for selecting locations where a woman is likely to leave her purse behind during an errand. Those areas include day care centers, gyms or parks. They break into the cars and steal women’s purses to get their checkbooks and drivers’ licenses. Then they use the checkbook of one victim to write a check and cash it using the identification of another victim, officials said.”

Please note that there was a smash and grab incident in the flat lot of FPC about three weeks ago where a parent’s purse was stolen from the front seat of her car while she was taking her child into the day school. An employee also had a church laptop stolen from a car parked offsite about two weeks ago. Wherever you go, please be diligent about placing items in your trunk or taking them with you rather than leaving them in your car in plain view.

The Adventures of Flat JesusJoin the children of FPC this summer in “The Adventures of Flat Jesus”. The Flat Jesus project was created as a way to keep our church connected during the summer travel season. He is based on the Flat Stanley children’s book. Flat Jesus is a visible expression of our faith and reminds us that Jesus is with us wherever we go - he does not stay in the church between Sundays but is with us every day as we partner with God to do God’s work in the world. Just think of the interesting conversations that can take place as pictures are taken with Flat Jesus.
