Dan Lash, CFP®, AIF® President’s Message
The Spring Symposium on June 9th at the Dulles Hyatt was an outstanding all day meeting with over 200 in
attendance. Attendees heard from many outstanding speakers from Michael Kitces to Carolyn McClanahan. The
Symposium titled “Bridge the Gap” truly lived up to the name as it focused on planning for Millennials through to the
Silent Generation.
We also celebrated our 2015 award winners, David Goldstein (Planner of the Year), Ryan Fleming (Norma Severn
Leadership), and Glenn Kautt (Lifetime Achievement). All of our award winners were nominated by our members
and are all well deserving of these accolades for their achievements in our profession. If you see any of them at our
next meeting, please be sure to congratulate them again.
Our ever-growing NexGen community held their most recent meeting on June 28. The speakers were Eleanor
Blayney and Michael Kitces. If you are a planner under 36 (or know of one), I would highly encourage you to join
our very active NexGen group and attend their Study Sessions.
Our next lunch meeting will be July 14th at Westwood Country Club in Vienna, Virginia. Please note our new
Virginia Luncheon location in Vienna. Our featured speaker will be Michael Finke, Ph.D. Dr. Finke is Dean and
Chief Academic Officer at The American College of Financial Services. He will be discussing a New Perspective on
Retirement Income Planning.
Along with Michael Finke, we will also have Matt Stephani, CFA® speaking. Matt is a senior portfolio manager with
Cavanaugh Hill Funds and will be focusing his discussion on Global Energy Consumption. This July program has
been approved for 2 CFP®, 2 CIMA® and 2 VA and 1 MD CE credits.

Trends in Adviser Compensation and Benefits Study Now Available!
FPA members can now access the 2015 Trends in Adviser Compensation and Benefits Study, which was done by
the FPA Research and Practice Institute™ and Financial Advisor IQ (a news service of the Financial Times). The
research helps all planners and their support staff understand trends in compensation and benefits.
While the study sought to create a valuable compensation benchmark resource for those currently working in the
financial advice profession, or seeking a position, the study examined the impact that compensation, benefits and
work environment have on job satisfaction and engagement.
The full report, which is now available at www.OneFPA.org/2015CompensationStudy, is a must read for anyone
working in the financial advisory space. Download a copy of the report and see how your compensation and
benefits package stacks up with other firms across the country.
MANY FPA NCA MEMBERS AT NexGen GATHERING!
Thank you to the FPA-NCA NexGen members who showed their support on a national level by attending NexGen
Gathering which was held this year in Dallas, TX. We had an excellent weekend of open conversations to transfer
our knowledge and to build relationships with FPA members across the country. Below is the group of National
Capital Area Attendees - we had 10% of the attendance, and represented well with our contributions! Thanks to all
that made the journey!

From the Programs Committee!
Lisa Kirchenbauer and Melissa Sotudeh
The Programs Committee is still enjoying the glow from the June Symposium. Thanks to everyone who attended
and provided support to make the event so successful! As we look to July and into the Fall, we are excited about the
programs that we are putting together to continue our theme for this year: Bridging the Gap. In July, we will
welcome Dean of the American College of Financial Services, Michael Finke, as he talks about “A New Perspective
on Income Retirement Planning”. We are pairing this presentation with a conversation about Global Energy
Consumption from Michael Stephani of Cavanal Hill Funds. We think it will be a very educational and interesting
discussion on both fronts.
Stay tuned as we move into the Fall, and offer education and professional development from American Funds,
Schwab, Thornburg, Altman Associates and others on a variety of topics including what your clients are looking for
from their advisor/planner now, SRI/ESG investing, estate planning and an economist who is likely to shake things
up as we survey the post-election landscape. Stay tuned through the website and Peggy’s timely posts!
NexGen Gathering Success!
Aaron Clarke
If you had the luxury of attending the 2016 NexGen Gathering in Dallas, TX, then this post will not surprise you!
Instead, I hope you feel encouraged to add to the forum and share your experience!
With only 107 attendees this year, this conference flies low on the radar, but it surely won’t stay this way for long as
it sells out faster each year. Everyone leaves feeling inspired to mature to help better themselves for the sake of their
clients. One may ask how this is possible, but it is quite a simple concept really. You decide the forum of topics on
Friday and spend the day on Saturday in smaller group sessions just discussing personal & professional hurdles or
goals, latest academic research material, or gathering information on a variety of subjects. The topics can be
anything you are interested in, so everyone has a group to learn from. This is where the magic of the weekend lives.
NexGen’s vision: “To ensure the transference of wisdom, tradition and integrity, from the pioneers of financial
planning to the next generation of our profession.” By truly serving this vision there are over 100 members in
attendance who are working with mentors to gain knowledge during daily life, and one weekend per year they show
up to learn from and teach others – facilitating the transition of knowledge.
For those of you who were in attendance this year or have attended in the past please post back to this forum sharing
your best takeaway or most memorable experience. Please keep the vulnerability going and share your experience
so others can see how powerful the event can be.

Michael Finke Presenting A New Perspective on income Retirement Planning
Advisors often view retirement income planning through the lens of the 4% rule, but changes in longevity and
a lower-return environment challenge conventional wisdom about safe withdrawal rates. This presentation
will discuss what it means to take risk with an investment portfolio in retirement, how high prices for bonds
and stocks will impact withdrawal rate projection, and the actual risk of health care expenses. The
presentation will conclude with strategies to deal with a new retirement reality including a discussion of
qualified longevity annuity contracts.
Michael Finke, Ph.D., CFP® is the Dean and Chief Academic Officer at The American College of Financial
Services. Dr. Finke served as the editor of the Journal of Personal Finance and is a contributing editor to
Research Magazine. He received a doctorate in consumer economics from the Ohio State University in 1998
and in finance from the University of Missouri in 2011. He was named to the 2013 and 2014 Investment
Advisor IA25 list and the 2012 Investment News Power 20, and received the Montgomery Warschauer best
paper award from the Journal of Financial Planning in 2013 and 2014.
Matthew Sephani Presenting A Discussion on Global Energy Consumption
We will highlight the contributions that energy production and consumption makes to a nation’s economic
development and the quality of life improvements that are realized by its citizens. Discussion followed with a
sampling of global locations where future energy production and consumption will massively expand over the
next few decades leading to GDP growth and quality of life improvements for those citizens.
Matthew Stephani is responsible for the management of the investment team that conducts the fundamental
equity research for Cavanal Hill Investment Management. The fundamental equity funds that Mr. Stephani is
responsible for includes the Cavanal Hill Opportunistic & World Energy.

NEW PLANNER SEARCH ON ONE FPA WEBSITE!
What is FPA PlannerSearch®?
FPA PlannerSearch® is a website that not only provides educational content to consumers on personal financial matters,
but also helps them find and engage CFP® professionals in their area. Through robust search functionality, consumers who
are looking for financial planning guidance and support can search for CFP® professionals who can help.
What role does FPA PlannerSearch® play for me?
The site was constructed to increase the online visibility of CFP® professionals who are also members of FPA. By using
best practices in Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social sharing, and structured data, the site increases the likelihood of
CFP® members of FPA being found online through Google searches. By way of this increased visibility new business
opportunities may emerge.
Who is able to participate in FPA PlannerSearch®?
In order to participate, you must be an FPA member in good standing and a CFP® professional. Members are not
automatically added to the platform, they must opt in. To opt in, please contact the FPA Member Engagement Team at
[email protected]. You can also opt-in online by visiting www.onefpa.org/business-
success/Pages/PlannerSearch.
Why has the platform been changed/improved?
In an increasingly competitive digital landscape, CFP® professionals need to be able to be found online. The changes we
have made to the architecture of the site and search functionality will now better support our members by providing more
visibility online which will lead to new business growth opportunities.
What, specifically, has been done to improve the platform?
As we set out on redeveloping the site and search tool, we did so with three distinct goals:
First was to increase planner findability. The new website’s foundation is built from the perspective of traffic
acquisition. Best practices of Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social sharing, and structured data will drive the
architecture of the website so members can be found more often and in more places across the web.
Second was to improve usability. User experience is paramount to findability and engagement. Consumers will enjoy a
streamlined experience and be able to easily accomplish their goal of researching, contacting, and partnering with a
financial planner that meets their unique individual needs.
Third was to expand accessibility. Users seeking to find a financial planner from their desktop, tablet, or smartphone will
be treated to a seamless user experience at their convenience. This will drive increased traffic, interactions, client leads and
– ultimately – help members grow their businesses.
What are some of the new features?
There are a couple new features that you should definitely pay attention to:
Now every planner has a unique URL path to their profile on FPA PlannerSearch®. That means you can share your
profile on the site with anyone by simply providing the URL. It is advisable to provide a link to your profile on
your website, blog, and any other way you can be found online.
Your profile now has a “My Links” section where you can share other places where you are found online. You can
share links to recent media appearances, news items where you appear, personal blog posts, and much more. This
section in particular is very important to helping drive SEO for your profile so be sure to keep it up to date with
your latest links!
Your profile also has a “Brochures” section where you can provide brochures and other content specific to your
business.
Also, when a consumer searches for a planner, they will be provided an interactive map where they can view
CFP® professionals within proximity to them. So just because someone may be viewing another planner from your
immediate area, they will now be able to quickly check out your profile as well.

How do I view/edit my profile on the platform?
Updating your profile is the same as the previous iteration of FPA PlannerSearch®. Simply log in to OneFPA.org and click
on “My Profile.” Information that is populated on FPA PlannerSearch® will be identified as such. There is also a
“PlannerSearch” tab on “My Profile” where you can populate information for the “My Links” and “Brochures” sections.
As always, you can get assistance by contacting a member of the FPA Member Engagement Team at
How do I get any new client leads?
The process is the same as before. You will get an email with an alert that a consumer is interested in you and your services.
You will then login to OneFPA.org and click on the “My Leads” tab at the top of the page to view your leads and contact
them.
What are the specifications for my profile picture?
To ensure your profile picture looks as good as possible, please only use a photo that is in JPEG or PNG format and
approximately 1000 pixels by 1000 pixels. We recommend that the body and head is centered in the image and not cropped
too closely, with a comfortable amount of spacing around the edges.
What are the specifications for the images I want to associate with my brochures in the “Brochures” section?
Images can be in either JPEG or PNG format and should be 50 pixels by 50 pixels. If your image exceeds this, it will
automatically be scaled to fit.
What are the specifications for the images I want to associate with my links in the “My Links” section?
Images can be in either JPEG or PNG format and should be 60 pixels by 60 pixels. If your image exceeds this, it will
automatically be scaled to fit.

Get the Latest Original Research on Investing by RPI and Journal of Financial Planning
The FPA Research and Practice Institute™ (RPI) has been engaging in original research on a wide array of subjects of
importance to financial planners and the latest study is now available. The 2015 Trends in Investing Survey, done in
collaboration with the Journal of Financial Planning, looks at how financial planners are using and recommending different
investment vehicles today and where they will look to invest over the coming year. The survey, which has been conducted
regularly since 2006, revealed that Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) have supplanted mutual funds as the preferred investment
vehicle by planners.
And keep an eye out for more research coming out later this year, including a social media study that was conducted in
partnership with LinkedIn and a Social Security study that is being done with AARP and CNBC.
