Climate Change, Pollution and Risks

Environment (incl. Climate Change)

Integrated research on the functioning of climate and the earth system, including the polar regions, is needed in order to observe and analyse how these systems evolve and predict their future evolution. This will enable the development of effective adaptation and mitigation measures to climate change and its current and future impacts. Pressures on environment and climate from anthropogenic and natural emissions will be investigated as well as related interactions. Advanced climate change models from the global to sub-regional scales will be developed and applied to assess changes, potential natural and socio-economic impacts and critical thresholds. Climate induced changes to atmospheric composition, greenhouse gases and to the water cycle will be studied. Emphasis will also be given to feedback mechanisms and abrupt changes. Novel responses to climate changes will also be studied.

Area 6.1.1.3. The Global Carbon cycle - Greenhouse Gas budgets

ENV.1.1.3.1: Impacts of climate variability, extreme events and increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations on terrestrial carbon storage,

exchange flows and soil carbon dynamics.

The aim is to better quantify the impacts of climate variability and extreme events on the carbon storage, exchange flows, and perturbations of soil functioning (including loss of organic matter) in European ecosystems (including agricultural land and forests) at the regional and continental scale. The impacts of changes in dissolved organic carbon quality and soil-water cycle interactions shall also be studied. Research should also address the effect of projected changes in climate and increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations on the key processes controlling the carbon cycle, and assess the vulnerability and future evolution of terrestrial sinks at European and global scale. Studies should draw on better integration of related biophysical processes, atmospheric and ecosystem observations, and state-of-the-art models.

Page 8: FP7 /1 EUROPEAN COMMISSION - Research DG - November 2006 Building a Europe of Knowledge the Seventh Framework Programme 2007-2013 EU-funded research on.

EUROPEAN COMMISSION - Research DG - November 2006FP7 /8

Expected impact:

In the medium-to-long-term: quantify more accurately the impacts of climate variability and extreme events on carbon storage, exchange and soil organic matter in European terrestrial ecosystems.

Improve our predictive capacity of the future evolution and vulnerability of C pools due to climate change and increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations.

Provide input to post-2012 initiatives and policies. Provide support and advice for soil use strategies (e.g. in relation to the EU Soil Protection Strategy).

Funding scheme: collaborative projects (small or medium-scale research projects – upper limit 3.5 m €)

Area 6.1.1.5. Climate Change Natural and Socio-economic Impacts

ENV.2008.1.1.5.1. Addressing deforestation in tropical areas: Greenhouse gas emissions, socio-economic drivers and impacts, and policy options for emissions reduction

Greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation in tropical areas need to be better quantified and the socio-economic drivers need to be analysed. The impacts from deforestation should be studied. These will contribute to the development of policy options to reduce GHG emissions from deforestation under present and future climate change scenarios considering the environmental, social and economical pressures in tropical areas. Work should provide input to emission reduction estimates for 2020 and thereafter, as well as to policy approaches, currently discussed in UNFCCC. Climate policies targeted at avoiding deforestation should be assessed and socio-economic impacts quantified. The impact of international climate policies on changes in the use of land (i.e. food versus bio fuels) should be assessed.

(Specific International Co-operation Action) (Policy relevant topic).

EUROPEAN COMMISSION - Research DG - November 2006FP7 /10

Expected impact:

Better quantification of GHG emissions from deforestation

evaluation of environmental and socio-economic impacts and drivers; development of policy recommendations and guidelines (short to medium term objectives).

Support for the development of relevant EU policies.

Funding scheme: collaborative projects (small or medium-scale focused research projects)

The global carbon cycle in FP7: priorities and key elements ► Quantifying more accurately the magnitude, distribution

and variability (seasonal to centennial) of carbon and other GHGs reservoirs and fluxes at the European (regional and continental scale) terrestrial ecosystems (including agriculture and forests) and adjacent oceans.

► Understand better the key processes determining the balance of the various terrestrial and ocean carbon sources/sinks and their interplay with climate change/variability (including extreme events) and increased CO2 concentrations. Develop further coupled carbon-climate models, in order to better quantify the magnitude of carbon-climate change feedbacks, and assess its effect on stabilization scenarios of GHG emissions.

► Account for past, present and future land use changes and management practices on carbon and GHGs sources and integrate these processes in state-of-the-art models.

The global carbon cycle in FP7: priorities and key elements (2)

► Address the issue of vulnerability and future evolution of important carbon sinks due to climate and human induced processes.

► provide quantitative assessment on the potential of managing terrestrial carbon sinks as means of climate change adaptation and mitigation.

► Finally, special attention will be given to studies integrating across atmospheric, oceanic and terrestrial carbon reservoirs, with the aim to better quantify and explain global carbon budgets and their evolution over time (including research on carbon dynamics in 'boundary' areas such as coastal areas/margins).
