On Dec 1, 2013 FVCS to break the world record for the highest paper airplane flight from a high-altitballoon launched from Kankakee Airport (3KK), 1520 South State Route 115, Kankakee, IL 60901, at (or after) 11:00 AM Local Time. A Mission Control was set up at DuPage Airport, 32W581 Tower Road, WChicago, IL 60185. All press personnel, Guests and members from Squadron and Wing witness the lauvia Skype at the Wing.
The current record, set in 2010 by a team of aerospace enthusiasts in Spain, currently stands at 89,591 feBut members of Fox Valley Composite Squadron planned of besting that record by greater than 15,000eet – targeting an altitude of 105,000 feet (that’s 19½ miles up into the Stratosphere) in what’s known as
near-space” (because it’s above 99% of the Earth’s atmosphere) -- with their paper aircraft.
The squadron designed the project as an extreme Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM)earning experience for their Cadets (youths ages 12-17). The cadets, along with the guidance of the seniofficers, designed, assembled, and tested a large paper airplane that will carry a one-pound payloadcontaining two high-definition (HD) video cameras, a GPS tracking system, and a custom-built flightcomputer. The airplane was attached to a large helium weather balloon and was projected to ascend to aaltitude greater than 100,000 feet above Sea Level, where the onboard flight computer will cut-away thepaper airplane for its record-breaking flight.
The balloon abruptly encountered a violent wind gradient (Jet stream?) at 51,000 feet sending our paper-
airplane tumbling into the balloon -- a total of 3 strikes in just over 10-seconds -- rupturing the balloonenvelope.
The team was able to track both the ascent and descent of the paper airplane in real-time using theaircraft’s on-board GPS flight tracking system and radio transmitter. This system will also allow the team tecover the aircraft and retrieve the video cameras – documenting the entire flight in stunning high definit
video – which will be shared with all press members in attendance.
For more details, photos, and videos about this project and world record attempt are available on the FoxValley Composite Squadron’s Near-Space Balloon Project website at:

Everyone who was involved in the Near Space Balloon project did an outstanding job both out at the launch and bacmission control. Even though we didn't break a world record, a good time was had by all and the cadets were ablgain some additional knowledge. Thank you all for your continued participation, enthusiasm, and support!

ES Training Framework for FY 2014 in Place
The Illinois Wing has posted the ES training and Operations Plan for FY 2014 into WMIRS. On 24 August theGroup Commanders met at Wing HQ and were briefed by a number of Wing Staffers including Operations. Wwalked out of the meeting with Dates on the calendar for each of the Groups to host a SAREX. We are waiting
or Group 3 to confirm their date before we post it. With that, FY 2014 looks to be a busy year. We will haveSAREX training opportunities throughout the Wing. If your commanders have not built Emergency Services inhe schedule, challenge them on it and get going on building ground teams and air crews in your units.

#OR PILOTS:
Aircraft Issues
Pilots are reminded to keep their heels on the floor and watch the break sensitivity to prevent flat spots on thres. When you are pre-flighting the aircraft, make sure to check the tires for worn spots. This can be done as you pt out of the hangar and again when you push it back for parking.
Please ensure you are checking the hours on the aircraft. Over flying the 100 hour causes numerous headachand red flags. Let’s tighten it up and fly safe.

How Much Fuel Do You Have?
0otie 0umber2 0O;C<5)5
Fuel Starvation and Exhaustion are still causal factors in many General Aviation Accidents. Fortunately, a large selection ofotalizing and monitoring options are available to help you prevent these very preventable accidents. But, technology only hwhen pilots apply it consistently and correctly. Follow these three simple steps to avoid becoming a fuel accident stati
Whether you’re “sticking the tanks” or relying on cutting edge fuel management software, know how much fuel you have on before each takeoff. If you have a fuel management system on-board, make sure you program it with accurate information be
Every Flight.
Know how much fuel you plan to burn and how much fuel you’re burning. If you don’t have on-board equipment to answeruestion, calculate your fuel burn before each flight and confirm your calculations each time you refuel. Comparing your a
uel burn to your calculated fuel burn will give you confidence in your fuel planning and you can often uncover fuel leaks or omall problems before they become big ones.
Finally, make a commitment to join the many pilots that have a personal minimum not to land with less than one hour’s fuel inanks. This will exceed any regulatory reserve fuel requirements and you’ll never be anxious about pushing your fuel.

Cartridge World will pay cash for cartridges collected for: The Civil Air Patrol. Cash will be paid in the following amounts:
nk Cartridges $0.50 and Laser Cartridges $1.50
Cartridges that will be accepted for credit include: All major manufacturers (HP, Canon, Epson, Brother, Lexmark, Dell), Cartridges thateen remanufactured by a major store (Staples, Office Max, Office Depot)

(The best method for deterthe cartridge is in this category is to examine the cartridge. If there is only one or less mention of manufacturer of the printer or if the pReplaces: XXXXX” appears on the cartridge it is likely a knock off and will not be credited. If there is any confusion about what is and isnock off cartridge the store owner will help clarify any questions.)
his is not a nationally sponsored program and has been arranged with the Cartridge World store located in Batavia, Illinois. You can checstore in your area to see if they too will do this for Civil Air Patrol as well (it is done by franchise). If not, please bring your empty ink and
artridges to Illinois Wing Headquarters and leave for Capt. Terri Peters. Capt. Terri Peters will take the cartridges to the Batavia store anhe check for CAP. All funds will be deposited at the Wing level for uses to be determined at a later time by the Wing Finance Committee.
