Thanksgiving Break
From the Desk of Mr. Sefcik and Mrs. Peters... Dear Parents and Guardians, It was wonderful seeing so many of you at Student-Led Conferences. We hope you found this time with your child valuable. Throughout the year, we encourage you to discuss with your child their educational goals and accomplishments. If you have not already taken the 5Essentials Survey and the Ready Math Survey, we kindly ask if you would take a few minutes of your time to do so. Your input is important and appreciated. The 5Essentials survey looks at five components found to be critical for school success: effective leaders, collaborative teachers, involved families, supportive environment, and ambitious instruction. The link for the survey is on the front page of the d114 website. During Teacher Institute Day on October 5, math teachers from Lotus and Stanton received professional development for Ready Math. Teachers were able to explore how to read the diagnostic results that students will be taking three times a year, how to intervene when students do not understand a specific skill, and how to find resources to support student growth. Teams were able to work collaboratively on their unit planning, using what they had learned from the Ready Math professional development. By completing the Ready Math survey, you will give us an idea of how we can help support you and your students with the implementation of our new math program. Below is the link for the survey: https://goo.gl/forms/DW9R5EsjKGK0WVkt2 This Thanksgiving, please take some time to appreciate all the blessings in your life. We count you and your children among ours. From our family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you for your time and for all you do!

On Friday, October 19, Mr. Sefcik, 56 students and 8 chaperones traveled to St. Procopius Church in Chicago’s historic Pilsen neighborhood. Students earned the trip by collecting $200.00 or more in Day of Service pledges. The students performed service both inside and outside the church and enjoyed a delicious authentic Mexican lunch. Students and chaperones also had the opportunity to visit the National Museum of Mexican Art. According to Mr. Sefcik, “It was a wonderful day of team bonding, service, culture, and education.”

Your child’s report card has two grade per class. The top grade is the academic grade your student earned for the
class. The bottom grade is their “citizenship grade” for that class. The citizenship grade is an average grade given by the teacher for your child’s
deportment (behavior) and effort in class. The GPA scale for Honors and High Honors is:
Honors: 3.0-3.64, High Honors: 3.65-4.0.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First semester honors is Friday, January 25, 2019 at 9:23
A.M. All parents and guardians are welcome to attend.
Students will be recognized for semester honors, high
honors, and citizenship. Students who are recognized will
also receive an ice cream sundae during lunch. The honors
criteria is based on first semester grades, which is the
year to date average of the 1st and 2nd quarters.
THE FOLLOWING IS THE HONORS CRITERIA:
High Honor Roll: GPA of 3.65-4.0
Honor Roll: GPA of 3.0-3.64

t was a quiet day on Fox Lake for Stanton’s inaugural fishing trip, but that didn’t dampen
the spirits of the 17 anglers that came out and braved the cool weather and windy lake
conditions. A special thank you to Mr. Lomas, Mr. Olson, and Mr. Schoenbeck for
chaperoning and sharing their fishing skills with the kids. A spring fishing trip is on the
hook, so watch for more details.
Whether we like it or not, cold and flu season is coming. The common Cold and Influenza (flu) share many similar symptoms, so it can be difficult to tell them apart. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold and symptoms are more intense. The common cold is generally not life threatening.
1. Get a flu shot-the CDC recommends everyone 6 months and older be vaccinated against the flu.
2. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, use hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available.
3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth (this is how germs enter your body). 4. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. 5. If you are sick, prevent spreading illness by limit contact with others. 6. Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze with a tissue, use the inside of your
elbow if there is no tissue available (wash your hands after).

The students in Ms. Jalove’s 1st quarter STEM classes participated in Stanton’s first ever, Egg Drop Challenge. While working in teams, students had freedom to design a project that would protect their egg from cracking when dropped to the ground from 12 feet high. Thank you to Guardian Material Handling for donating a forklift for the day. According to Ms. Jalove, “The students did a wonderful job collaborating on their end of the quarter assignment. I was truly impressed with their creative egg drop designs.” Below are the groups who successfully landed their egg without cracking. 6th Grade: 1. Gabrielle Drew, Ozzy Sanchez, Kate Lantz-Werner, Gael Barcenas, Zach Michniewicz. 2. Connor McClain-Cregan, Jenna Russo, Kerrie Adams, Ethan Berk. 3.
