That’s the phrase that appeared when announcing our 2013/14 Season, which was billed as “Big, bold and filled with unforgettable performances.”

What we experienced over the season was YOU inspiring US to work harder than ever to bring exciting new opportunities for you to

engage in, making the Fox Cities P.A.C. the gathering place for the community.

That’s what our mission of engaging, educating and entertaining is all about.

Together we enjoyed a variety of performances and we reached a few important milestones. Thanks to your passion for the arts and unwavering support of the Center, we welcomed our 2 millionth ticketed patron and more than 250,000 students have now shared unique, valuable educational experiences that expanded their classroom lessons. To us, these milestones are just one way to measure our goal of truly being a gathering place for the community.

This year’s annual report focuses on what makes the Center your gathering place; a place that brings together families, students, lifelong theater lovers, businesses and nonprofits to gather, connect and share with one another through the arts.

As a nonprofit arts and cultural education organization, we exist to bring different segments of our community together to be entertained and to engage in the world of live performing arts. This is possible because of your support and participation.

As you review this past season’s highlights we hope you share our pride in this great community. It is your support, investment and passion that makes the Center the place — Where The Arts Come Alive!

The Year in Review“Prepare to Be Inspired”

The artistry on the stage and the people in the audience weave the fabric that becomes a gathering place for the community.

Donors Glenn and Martha McKendrick have experienced several events at the Fox Cities P.A.C. Over the years they have become Annual Partners, Broadway Season Ticket Holders and Arts Alive! Season Ticket Holders. They have invited family, friends and neighbors to join them to enjoy various performances at the Center.

“We like the arts, we like entertainment and I like a date night. We like to go out locally and see quality entertainment. We’ve seen really good shows here, shows that come here before Milwaukee or Madison,” Martha said.

Arts advocates like the McKendricks make it possible for more people to afford the experience of live theater because donations large and small go toward subsidizing ticket prices and keep costs low for Arts Alive! and education performances. Donations also help provide scholarship tickets for those that may not be able to attend if it wasn’t for the generosity of the community.

The Fox Cities P.A.C. also exists to serve the community. During the 2013/14 Season, the Center welcomed businesses, schools and groups for everything from recognition dinners to workshops, fundraisers and graduations. More than 25 percent of those uses were hosted by nonprofits.

Harbor House Domestic Abuse Programs presented its 10th Annual A Time To Laugh Comedy Night Charity Gala at the Center featuring the popular Whose Live Anyway, an improvised comedy and song act based on the popular TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”. During the signature event, the audience celebrated the healing power of laughter while raising money for people in our community who courageously go to the Harbor House for relief from domestic violence.

The Center’s large, unique and flexible spaces give nonprofits like Harbor House a centrally located and convenient place to host events.

TOTAL ECONOMIC IMPACT

$31 MILLION

The Center brings in entertainment that draws visitors from far beyond its footprint and contributes to the local economy.

The 2013/14 Kimberly-Clark Broadway Across America Series produced $31 million in economic activity over its 9.5 weeks of performances at the Center. This includes going out to dinner before a show and spending by cast and crew of the tour who often stay in hotels, take in local attractions and eat at local restaurants.

More than 10 percent of ticket buyers traveled 60 miles or more with another nearly 3 percent coming from out-of-state.

“They don’t just come for a show, they come for shopping, dining and everything else we have to offer,” said Pam Seidl, Executive Director of the Fox Cities Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Seidl went on to explain that since 2010 there has been a $3 million per year growth in entertainment spending going into the local economy.

This year the Center celebrated its 2 millionth ticketed patron during the Wisconsin premiere run of Flashdance — The Musical, a feat accomplished because of overwhelming community support of the arts. Two million people have now witnessed the best of Broadway, unique cultures and classic artists. Just this past season, Broadway hits like The Phantom of the Opera and Wicked returned to the Fox Cities. During the Arts Alive! Series, Doc Severinsen entertained audiences in addition to acts like Judy Collins and Hello, Dolly! starring Sally Struthers. Harry Connick Jr. and Chicago also brought their popular acts to the Fox Cities P.A.C. stage.

These performances help put the Fox Cities P.A.C. on the map as a premier venue and a destination for touring shows and artists.

During the 2013/14 Season the Bemis Company Education Series brought more than 23,000 students to the Center. It also celebrated a major milestone: welcoming its 250,000th student to engage in unique, valuable educational experiences during Omaha Theater on Tour’s production of The Diary of a Worm, a Spider and a Fly. That is a quarter of a million smiles, giggles and moments of inspiration filling the Center throughout the past 10 years.

Students got their literary lessons from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, their history class with ArtsPower’s Laura Ingalls Wilder and small children found a way to relate to the stage and learn life skills like fitting in, being nice and not judging a book by its cover during Lightwire Theatre’s presentation of The Ugly Ducking and The Tortoise and The Hare. Students of all ages learned cultural lessons from Step Afrika! and Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano.

One of the Center’s favorite programs celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. The Fox Cities Choral Music Festival has welcomed nearly 1,700 students representing 16 different high schools to perform on stage with a nationally recognized guest conductor since 2004.

Choir students from schools in 11 districts had the unique experience of being on stage and backstage at the Center and received a one-of-a-kind educational experience. Conductors from Iowa, Colorado, South Carolina, North Dakota, Michigan, Indiana and Illinois have come to teach students singing techniques used in classrooms at major universities such as Butler, Millikin and Ohio State.

The experience culminates with a public performance that the community looks forward to each year. The choirs sing selections as individual schools and then come together to perform the grand finale.

As part of the Boldt Arts Alive! Series, professional dance troupe Diavolo spent a week in our community visiting nine different local groups and performing a daytime education performance and a public performance.

During its first week-long residency, the Center’s impact reached from De Pere to Fond du Lac as the highly-trained and skilled dancers taught workshops on trust, teamwork and confidence. While some of the workshops were master dance classes, many were open to the public and at-risk or disabled students who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to meet, interact with and learn from professional dancers in a community setting.

The Center’s Frank C. Shattuck Performing Arts Touch the Hearts of Students (P.A.T.H.S.) program invited students from Appleton Central High School to participate in “Changed For Good,” a six week program designed to help explore themes from the musical Wicked including inner worth, self-evaluation and respect toward others.

The Center offered a safe environment for students to experience the power of the arts and share that experience with their community. It gave students the outlet not only to connect with Broadway but more importantly to connect with each other.

Ultimately the project allowed at-risk students to rise above limitations put on them by society and encouraged their view of themselves to be changed for the better and hopefully be changed for good.

Appleton Central Principal, Katherine Crowley Peckham, said the partnership with the Center and Bergstrom-Mahler Museum of Glass gave her students an experience that would normally not be available to them and saw them learn and grow as part of the project.

Clara Carpenter, a student in the program, explained that seeing the character Elphaba become empowered and stand-up to the way others saw her inspired her own artwork. While completing the project was an achievement, it was the feeling she got when her art was displayed that she’ll never forget.

“Without the P.A.C. a lot of our students would not have the experience of seeing live performing arts,” Peckham said. “The arts enrich our students’ lives and the P.A.C. makes the experience special. Students need to learn about themselves — and the arts are a part of that.”

“It gave me the confidence to make art at all. A lot of people want to do it, but they think they are not good or they didn’t go to school for it, but this allowed me to express myself,” Carpenter said.

“ I was proud to have my art displayed in a museum and my mom and my teachers came to see it.” - Clara Carpenter

This year the Center welcomed Community First Credit Union as a sponsor of Community Engagement Activities. This sponsorship allowed for additional special components to enhance each theatrical experience for the community. Sixty-five percent of the Centers’ programming had an interactive component. Thanks to community participation, patrons danced, learned and dove deeper into performances through preshow history lessons, an 80s dance party and master classes with professional performers. One example of such activities was Family Night On Broadway, which invited families to Sister Act and offered themed activities including a photo booth, a nun run, plinko board, trivia and craft station.

While 86 percent of the Center’s income is earned, 14 percent is contributed by generous donors who believe in its mission. These donations allow the Center to provide subsidized ticket prices, ticket scholarships and help to off-set the facility use cost for community groups.

In fact, more than 72 percent of the Center’s annual budget goes toward programming while only 28 percent goes toward administrative costs, well under the national average of 35 percent.

The Center could not do this without support of donors, allowing it to focus on its mission of being the gathering place for the community. It is also thanks to audiences who attend performances. By attending they show constant support for the Center and its programming. These two pieces make the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center an attractive stop for the best artists, the newest Broadway and popular titles.

We may provide the building, but it is your support, passion and spirit that make this place so special for the community.

It is the strong support from the community as donors, ticket buyers and volunteers that allow the Center to provide high quality entertainment that makes people want to come back time and time again.
