    In January 1944, over 50,000 German troops were trappedin the Korsun pocket. Te German relie eort had allen justshort leaving the troops inside just one option, a desperate

    breakout attempt had to be made. Despite most o the troopshaving to move on oot the breakout was largely successul,and over 35,000 men surrounded at Korsun reached saety.Te commander who led this remarkable operation rom theront was Major Robert Kstner, acting commander o the105. Grenadierregiment, 72. Inanteriedivision.

    Tis tough ront-line ocer received the Knights Cross withOak Leaves or his eorts.

    Kstner was a strong stocky man with an outgoing personal-ity that inspired condence in his men. A career soldier, hehad joined the Reichsheer in 1931 and risen through the

    ranks. He was commissioned an ocer in the inantry in1937. He had ought rom 1939 in Poland, through overtwo years in Russia, up to the events at Korsun. Kstnertook over command o the 105. Grenadierregiment in April1943. In December 1943 he successully led the regiment indeence o the Dneiper River line and was awarded his rst

    Knights Cross.

    At the conclusion o the Korsun pocket battles, Kstners unitwas one o the ew let inside the pocket in a state approach-ing ull strength and so played a critical role in the breakoutand the battles leading up to it. Starting on the night o 11February 1944 an assault group o grenadiers, assault guns,

    In both cases Kstner rst carried out careul pre-battle re-connaissance o the villages and waited or night to maximiseconcealment. Both assaults succeeded with ew Germanlosses.

    He did not have long to rest on his laurels. A ew nightslater, on 16 February, the main breakout attempt began.By now things were desperate. Tree spearheads would leadthe way, to maximise the chances that at least some wouldget through. Again, Kstners men led the rst spearhead toset out. All wheeled transport was abandoned, and at thenal crossing o the Gniloy ikich River many units even

    abandoned their tracked vehicles. Relying on silence andclose combat where necessary, Kstners men broke throughthe Soviet ring and marched the ten kilometres to Germanlines beore Soviet orces could even react. Virtually all o72. Inanteriedivision escaped the pocket, the division onlysuering modest losses.

    Promoted to Oberstleuntant ater these battles, Kstner stayedwith 72. Inanteriedivision or the rest o the war. Movedto Poland or rest and rebuilding, the 72. Inanteriedivisionperormed well deending on the Vistula River line ater theSoviet breakthrough in Operation Bagration.

    It was again smashed in the Soviet Vistula oensive inJanuary 1945, but still ell back intact and was back inaction in March. Eventually it surrendered to the Soviets

    in May 1945, one o the ew intact divisions remaining onthe eastern ront. Kstner survived the war and returned to

    civilian lie.

    When Inantry teams rom a SS-Panzergrenadier Platoonshoot at a platoon that contains a Soviet Komissar team, youmay make a second roll or each hit scored on the platoon.

    I you roll a 5 or 6, you can choose to mark theKomissar team as a priority target similar to the Gunank rule in the rulebook.

    Otherwise, the hits are allocated as normal.

    When used, this rule overrides all other rules about hit al-

    location except those regarding valid targets.

    fighting Winter Battles

    More than any Soviet leader, General Winter was responsi-ble or halting the German advance at the end o 1941. Tesnow and ice o that terrible winter proved as dangerous asany enemy to the invading Germans. Te Red Army tookadvantage o subsequent winters to launch major oensives,

    relying on the snow and ice to immobilise the Germans,allowing their own less technological orces ree reign.

    Te ollowing optional rules are included or use i bothplayers agree.

    In winter the entire battleeld is covered in snow, oten in deepdrits hiding all manner o obstacles. Snow makes all Cross-country terrain into Dicult Going and all Roads into Cross-country terrain.

    Streams, rivers, lakes, and marshes reeze solid making crossingpossible, but risky. Frozen streams are only Dicult Goinginstead o the usual Very Dicult Going. Rivers, lakes andswamps ice over becoming Dicult Going as well. However,armoured vehicles ace an additional risk. Tey must add 3

    to their initial Bogging Roll and compare the result with theirFront armour rating. I the result is less than their Front armourrating, the tank breaks through the ice and disappears into thewater below. On a higher result, the ice holds.

    In Spring all Roads become Cross-country terrain, while allCross-country terrain counts as Dicult Going. Streams becomerivers, creeks become streams, and marshes become Very DicultGoing.

    A SS-Panzergrenadier Platoon o the 5. SS-PanzerdivisionWiking may make a Stormtroopers Move while PinnedDown and may move towards the enemy while makingthis move.

    Sel-propelled anti-tank guns are an inexpensive way toget high calibre guns into the ront lines. More mobilethan normal anti-tank platoons, the tank-hunters canoutmanoeuvre or ambush the enemy to bring devastatingre upon advancing enemy armoured ormations.
