Webster’s Dictionary defines inspire as: “to influence, move, or guide by divine or supernatural inspiration;

to exert an animating, enlivening, or exalting influence on; to spur on; impel, motivate, affect.”

But I define inspire as Leroy McCormick from Winneshiek County, who has been a club leader and contributor to the Clover Café at the Winneshiek County fairgrounds. He worked with three generations as a volunteer for the 4-H organization for 47 years.

Or, C.J. Gauger, State 4-H Leader from 1959-79, currently age 98, still actively seeking opportunities to make a difference and do what he can to contribute value to the 4-H organization. I can validate that with the delightful phone calls he initiates at least weekly.

I define inspire as 4-H youth in Warren County who are working with a local daycare to establish a community garden where older youth will learn about gardening and teach the daycare youth about the benefits of eating fresh, locally grown food.

Or 1,000+ Iowa youth developing their interests in science, technology, engineering and math annually through 4-H activities like building robots and extracting DNA from bananas.

I define inspire as the two girls from L&W Feeders 4-H Club in Iowa County

who donated their state fair 4-H projects to raise funds in the auction at the gala. When 50 percent of the price paid for the Amana style clocks was given back to the club, those same members made a decision to donate that money to pay the way for seven members of the club who had never been to the State 4-H Conference.

Or, the Early Achievers 4-H Club in Sac County spending their Sunday to bake and donate 800 cookies for the Northwest Iowa Golf Outing.

I define inspire as the 4-H’er who stepped in to show a steer at the Mills County Fair for the young man who was undergoing surgery for a brain tumor. His market steer ultimately went on to win grand champion, and the volunteer 4-H’er was awarded Grand Champion Senior Showman.

These are the kind of inspiring folks I have met and have heard the legacies of as I’ve travelled across the state. And to think that this is only the first four months of my honor and privilege to serve as your new executive director!

What I find most inspiring is the love, respect and affinity that all of you have for The Clover! If I’ve heard it once, I’ve heard it 100 times, “I am who I am because of what 4-H did in my life!” There is nothing more motivating to get me out of bed in the morning and give me reason to keep Iowa 4-H green and growing!

I am challenging you to join us in one of the many upcoming gatherings we have planned for 4-H’ers past and present, and to share the inspiration The Clover has given you. Or, perhaps you are looking to be inspired yourself? Surround yourself with fellow 4-H’ers, and you won’t have to look very far.

A Brighter World!By Laura Sternweis • Photos by Camera Corps

In June, more than 1,000 teenagers converged on the Iowa State University campus for three days full of speakers,

workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet and community service activities.

The 2012 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference, “Brighten Your World,” began on June 26th. Youth from across the state gathered in Ames to learn more about themselves and the world they live in. The fun and friendship-building continued for three days with youth from every part of Iowa.

“I learned many leadership and communication skills from co-chairing the conference,” said Haley Wellman, conference co-chair from Lee County. “It was awesome to join with teenageers from across Iowa to experience the event.”

A variety of workshops ranging from glassblowing, Zumba dance and preserving 4-H memories to farming, shopping tips and design were presented. Youth chose specialized tracks that focused on a theme, like shooting sports, or could choose a different workshop each day.

“Iowa 4-H Youth Conference has given me the opportunity to meet so many new people, develop new skills, and have tons of fun through a wide variety of workshops,” said Lauren Houska, conference co-chair from Sac County. “From dancing to community service and cooking to glass blowing, Conference is an experience like no other!”

“Being co-chair of the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference with Haley Wellman has shown me what a difference just two

people can make through a positive attitude and showing excitement for what is happening,” said Houska.

“The workshops weren’t the only points of interest at the conference,” noted Brenda Allen, conference coordinator and 4-H youth development specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

“This year’s speakers came from a variety of backgrounds,” said Allen. “But one thing they all had in common was their enthusiasm for tomorrow’s leaders.”

Support Fore 4-H

It has been a hot summer, but even 100 degree temperatures will not stop our golfers from supporting the Iowa 4-H

Foundation. On June 22nd, we kicked off golfing

season with our brand new Northwest Iowa event, the Emerald Hills Golf Tour-nament, in Arnolds Park. Our celebrity golfer, Iowa’s Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey, swung the clubs to help us raise nearly $44,000. Everyone enjoyed a great meal from The Cattlemen’s Association that evening, as well as a beautiful view of the lakes region of Northwest Iowa.

The 16th Annual Central Iowa Golf Tournament participants enjoyed a new location on July 16th, at the Hyperion Field Club in Johnston. The Director of Athletics at the University of Northern Iowa, Troy Dannen, was the celebrity golfer.

“The Central Iowa outing has had great success year after year because of the loyalty of our participants,” said Albert Grunenwald, chief operating officer for the Iowa 4-H Foundation. “We have 15 com-panies that are members of our 10-Year Sponsor Club, and we add new members every year.”

Golfers have one more opportunity to support 4-H this year on August 23rd at Blue Top Ridge in Riverside. Register online at www.iowa4hfoundation.org/eastgolf.

It’s never too early to start planning for next golf season. If you would like to serve on the tournament committee, sponsor a golf event, or register a team for next year, please contact Albert Grunenwald at (515) 294-4780 or at [email protected].

Four Iowa 4-H members were selected to represent Iowa at the National 4-H Conference on March 24-29 in Chevy

Chase, Maryland. Kayla Krull of Worth County, Abigail Peterson of Webster County, Amy Prestholt of Worth County and Savannah Ruby of Adair County, joined 250 delegates from across the nation to represent the interest of their state and national 4-H programs.

4-H’ers who attended the conference chose from numerous workshops and roundtable discussions, including topics such as alcohol and drug use prevention, youth suicide prevention, healthy eating and living, equal education for under-represented groups, integration of veteran and military families into local communities and using science and technology to improve local communities.

After roundtable discussions, youth prepared and presented briefs to national agencies about current issues involving youth from across the country. Delegates also had the opportunity to meet with their state congressmen and discuss current happenings with 4-H in Iowa.

Participants had the opportunity to listen to Jill Biden, second lady of the United

States, Tom Vilsack, United States Secretary of Agriculture, and Aaron Davis, an inspiring author and motivational speaker. Throughout the conference, delegates had the opportunity to network with other youth, as well as business leaders.

This opportunity would not be possible without the ongoing support and sponsorship from many individuals and businesses. Thank you especially to the

Des Moines Register, for making this trip possible for Iowa’s future leaders.

To learn more about National 4-H Conference visit www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/national4hconference. Applications are due February 1. If you are interested in donating to the National 4-H Conference endowment contact Kris Fish Kuhlmann at (515) 294-1552 or by email at [email protected].

Educational activities such as “Label Fables” and a course in food safety principles accompanied more traditional camp activities such as zip-lining, hikes and obstacle courses.

Mini-Grants Promote Locally Grown Produce Consumption

Eleven mini-grants, totaling $10,000, are supporting partnerships between Master Gardeners and 4-H youth at the county level. Funding is being used to build community capacity to support youth and adult partnerships that promote healthy eating of locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Youth Voice: Youth Choice program and activities is provided by a grant through National 4-H Council and the Wal-Mart Foundation.

Counties awarded mini-grants include: Allamakee, Boone, Buchanan, Clarke, Delaware, Henry, Jasper, Johnson, Mahaska, Poweshiek and Warren.

Each county has a different project lined up. In Johnson County, the Master Gardener/4-H team will lead lessons at two school gardens and develop an after-school garden club.

The Poweshiek County team is establishing a Junior Master Gardener 4-H Club in Grinnell and will expand their programming to the Montezuma and Brooklyn areas.

In Warren County, the team is partnering with a local daycare to establish a community garden, where older youth will learn about gardening and teach the

daycare youth about the benefits of eating fresh, locally grown food. The 4-H youth plan to present their community garden experience and nutritional research to community groups.

As one of the nation’s largest youth development organizations, Iowa 4-H is proud to positively influence youth for a healthier tomorrow through programs such as these. We could not do it without the generous sponsorships of organizations such as the Wellmark Foundation, Iowa Soybean Association, National 4-H Council, Wal-Mart Foundation and ISU Extension and Outreach. Thank you for supporting the health and well-being of Iowa’s youth!

4-H County HistoriesA decade ago, during Iowa 4-H’s centennial

year, several 4-H volunteers and ISU Extension staff members discussed

the opportunity to document an illustrated history of 4-H in Iowa. Their dream has now become a reality with an online blog at www.iowa4hfoundation.org that everyone can see, enjoy and add their personal stories. The histories are county specific and are being released in intervals. 4-H staff and volunteers will be reviewing additional county 4-H histories, with two to four being published on the blog each month.

All county histories will be posted from 2011-2013. Each county has taken a different approach to documenting their history highlighting different events and milestones! Enjoy reading about Iowa 4-H history and the impact the program has had in communities across Iowa. While you are there, please share your stories and continue the legacy of Iowa 4-H.

Did you know some of thesefun 4-H history tidbits?

Audubon County began organizing 4-H clubs in 1924 with a baby beef club, sheep clubs and girls’ clothing clubs.

In 1951 Boone County 4-H’ers participated in electrical education training schools, emphasizing lighting and motors, and increasing awareness of electrical safety hazards.

By the spring of 1918, Buena Vista County families were desperately in need of food. Funding from USDA allowed for the hiring of home economist Bertha Knight, who presented demonstrations in saving wheat, meat, fat and sugar, as well as canning and drying fruits and vegetables and saving fuel and clothing. Under her direction, four girls’ canning clubs were organized, which collectively canned 210 quarts of fruits and vegetables.

Cass County 4-H and FFA members exhibited at the new fairgrounds in Atlantic in

1950, moving to the west end of town. The Cass County Fair prides itself in that it is a free fair—free gate admission and free entertainment. This is made possible because of the many donations and volunteer hours put in at the 4-H food stand.

The only state roping event for 4-H began in Cerro Gordo County in 2001, and has a roping arena at the fairgrounds that was funded by grants, community organizations and private individuals.

The Clay County Fair was not held during World War II, but according to the book 75 Years – Clay County Fair by Mary Huston, “there was

a 4-H Show of some size each of those years.”

In Clayton County, in 1959, the baby calves were weighed rather than taped, and ear-tagged rather than tattooed, as in earlier years.

Davis County 4-H’ers participated in countywide free health screenings in the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s.

In the early 1960’s Decatur County had a presentation on civil defense. The speaker explained that if under a nuclear attack we may not be as far

removed from danger as some might think, given that some military installations such as Offutt Air Force Base were actually not that far away.

1927 marked the first fall festival in Dickinson County. The primary purpose of this event was “to promote and expand boys and girls club work by giving them a place here at home to show their exhibits.” Attendance at the first festival was recorded to be between 800 and 1,000 people.

In 1949 an achievement show in Dubuque County was seriously curtailed; such public gatherings were prohibited because of polio concerns.

Boys 4-H in Hamilton County started out in 1919 as county-wide livestock clubs, and the first recorded club was a Purebred Sow and Litter Club. Each member had a sow and litter, and they raised an average of seven pigs per litter.

Harrison County 4-H started a babysitting course in 1971. This program has continued throughout the years and today is held in six school districts across the county with 75 to 115 participants per year.

In the 1960’s the Howard County slogan was, “Today’s girls join 4-H clubs to develop into a mature personality and become an effective family member and citizen.” It was used to catch the interest of girls to join 4-H.

In the early 2000’s, the 4-H and youth programs in Johnson County expanded

to reach youth through school enrichment programs, including nutrition education.

Keokuk County is one of the founding counties for the National 4-H movement, and Cap Miller could very well be considered its founder. However, a “Wallace Farmer” article found in the files sums up how Miller thought about the founding of 4-H, “. . some might refer to the 1914 Smith Lever Act that provided federal aid for extension club work through county superintendents and that. 4-H work started long before that. The youth work that was to become known as “4-H” began at a grassroots level not from a single program, but from many.”

A focus on service in Kossuth County during World War II included a bond drive and salvage drives for paper, aluminum, rubber, scrap iron and waste fat.

Lee County 4-H club records date to 1920, with canning and poultry clubs. In those early years, club work was mostly a summer activity, but in 1922 an effort was begun to add enough other objectives to the main project to keep the clubs meeting year round.

Marion County 4-H’ers began naming their clubs in the 1930’s, including Win or Grin, We-X-L and Summit Strivers.

In August 2010, the FIrST LEGO League in Page County introduced students to real-world engineering challenges by building Lego-based robots to complete tasks on a playing surface.

In Polk County more than 500 people annually attended 4-H rally Days in the early 1960’s.

In the 1940’s, the Ringgold County colt club project was selected as the most outstanding and with the most members in the State of Iowa. Draft foals, yearlings and two-year-olds; saddle foals and yearlings; and mules and yearlings were exhibited.

Scott County 4-H’ers carry on a tradition of Family Fun Night each winter for current 4-H families and long-time supporters. A catered meal, award presentations, games and prizes

for youngsters and a raffle help raise funds for county 4-H programs.

A Story County 4-H Foundation Board was activated in 2004. They started with an endowment of $39,000, established in 1999.

In 1927, the Taylor County 4-H club gave rural girls a dignified organization of their own. They featured training in leadership, wholesome good times and provide betterhome economics practices.

The first available Van Buren County 4-H records are from 1926, and show 117 girls and 71 boys enrolled in 4-H clubs. In those early years 4-H’ers created, edited and published a 4-H newspaper called “4-H Climber.”

In 1917, public meetings were held to stir up interest in Webster County for boys and girls club work. Nineteen meetings were held in one

month and reached 1,727 people.A new girls 4-H club was organized at the

Sanford Center in Sioux City in 1959, becoming the first interracial club in Woodbury County.

A yearly highlight for many 4-H’ers across the state of Iowa is the State 4-H Conference held on the Iowa State University campus. In 2005, Worth County had more than 100 delegates attend this conference, which is a state record Worth County proudly holds.

Also included in the 4-H History is information about Iowa attending the National 4-H Conference since 1927, and the well known Iowa 4-H legend, C.J. Gauger.

4-H’ers Show Their Cyclone Spirit

On January 14, 2012, a sea of green covered Hilton Coliseum. Over 700 4-H’ers and supporters flooded to the campus of Iowa

State University to enjoy food, fellowship with other 4-H’ers and a great game of basketball. The attendees enjoyed a delicious pulled pork tailgate meal, sponsored by the Iowa Pork Producers Association, then witnessed the Iowa State University Women’s basketball team take on the Texas A&M Lady Aggies.

“The Cyclones lost the Jan. 14 game to Texas A&M, but our 4-H’ers still had a great time cheering for the Cyclone women and visiting the Iowa State campus,” said Shelly Greving, Iowa 4-H Foundation marketing director. “4-H Day at Hilton is always a 4-H club and family friendly event.”

New to the 2012 event, 230 attendees participated in the “4-H Leads to Careers” event sponsored by the Iowa State University College of Human Sciences. 4-H members and guests had the opportunity to participate in a

campus tour and witness examples of how 4-H can help them find their career path.

Iowa State University Collegiate 4-H’ers were also involved in making this event a success by checking-in participants, handing out t-shirts, and helping to ensure the day ran smoothly.

The Iowa 4-H Foundation coordinates this event and believes it is a great way for 4-H’ers from across the state to get to know one another, have fun, and support the number one youth organization in the nation!

If you’d like more information about how you can partner with the Iowa 4-H Foundation on events like 4-H Day at Hilton, contact Shelly Greving at [email protected] or (515) 294-1607.

The science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiative is on the forefront of youth

development and education in our country. Our nation’s leaders recognize STEM as an increasingly vital component of our future. Because of this, enhancing youth’s understanding of mathematics, science, technology and engineering is a growing interest in schools and other educational programs.

In our own state, Governor Terry Branstad is leading an effort to broaden the economic base while continuing to focus on Iowa’s agricultural strengths. The targeted industries for growing the economy include advanced manufacturing, food manufacturing, and renewable energy.

All three of these require a workforce that is skilled in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and

the Iowa Space Grant Consortium have partnered to develop an Iowa 4-H youth program that is taking great strides to develop youth in these areas.

For over fifteen years, the 4-H Extension Science, Engineering and Technology (E-SET) Program has engaged and developed the interests of our youth in STEM fields. The past three years have seen significant growth for the program, with over 1,000 youth participating in E-SET each year.

E-SET gives students access to a variety of skill-building activities. The State Science Fair challenges 4-H members not only to create a science project, but also to educate others on what they have discovered throughout the process.

FIRST LEGO League engages youth in hands-on robotics design and scientific research - teaching valuable engineering skills while “playing” with a popular childhood toy.

From digital storytelling activities like Iowa Studio 4-H, to a geospacial mapping technology club, E-SET offers a range of STEM-related activities to 4-H youth.

The skills that 4-H members gain through E-SET activities go far beyond basic classroom lessons. Exercises in problem solving, critical thinking, decision making and team building give youth important life experience that instills confidence for future.

“STEM is so critical to all of us, whether we pursue a STEM career or not. It is

so embedded in our lives we can’t even separate it anymore. The level of interaction with STEM and the ability to make good decisions related to STEM is critical for all citizens,” said program director, Jay Staker. “Our work strives to give our youth in Iowa a stronger STEM background and better skills. The tools used in STEM can also apply to life’s decisions and problems, STEM or not.”

Iowa 4-H is proud to develop educational opportunities for students to further explore their interests in STEM fields and graciously acknowledges the sponsors who make the E-SET program possible: Blank Park Zoo, Bratney Companies, Cargill, G & L Clothing, Iowa Energy Center, Iowa National Guard, KCWI, Monsanto, Pioneer, Renewable Energy Group, Rockwell Collins, and Stiver’s Ford.

The tools used in STEM can also apply to life’s decisions and problems, STEM or not.

—Jay Staker, Program Director, E-SET

Gov. Terry Branstad, Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and University of Northern

Iowa President Ben Allen are leading an effort in Iowa to provide better support and coordination between the STEM stakeholders. Iowa State University has been identified as the STEM Hub for the north central region under the leadership of the Vice President of Extension and Outreach, Cathann Kress. ISU is working to continue to offer outstanding powerful STEM opportunities for K-12 youth. ISU faculty and staff have much to offer Iowa for STEM outreach in both the region but also across the state. The Governor’s STEM Hub application process asked each Hub to include advisors from ISU Extension and Outreach, and ISU will support all hubs with STEM.

ISU has a strong set of programs that reach across the state. Programs such as FIRST LEGO League, State Science and Technology Fair of Iowa, IT Adventures, student internships and Science Bound reach nearly 100,000 participants per year. Along with these programs, Iowa has a strong STEM program in 4-H through ISU Extension and Outreach. 4-H has focused on STEM for youth for over 100 years. ISU as a STEM Hub is leading the way to meeting the state’s need for STEM workers to meet the needs of Iowa for years to come. By building a strong STEM workforce Iowa’s economy can grow and help the state prosper.

To learn more about ways to partner with Iowa 4-H on STEM initiatives contact 4-H E-SET program specialist, Jay Staker, at [email protected] or (515) 294-8417. To donate to 4-H E-SET programs contact Kris Fish Kuhlmann at [email protected] or (515) 294-1552.

Truly a grand champion event, the third annual Iowa 4-H Gala was held on February 25th at the Downtown

Des Moines Marriott Hotel. With over 250 attendees, guests enjoyed an evening of food, fellowship and an opportunity to further support Iowa 4-H by bidding on more than 150 auction items. This event more than doubled the 2011 totals by netting more than $74,000 to support Iowa’s youth and the 4-H program statewide.

Throughout the evening, guests had the opportunity to bid on a wide variety of auction items including dream vacations, family outings, beautiful jewelry pieces, date night packages and one-of-a-kind travel experiences.

New to the auction this year, 4-H members from across Iowa played a major part in this year’s fundraising event by donating many unique 4-H projects to the auction.

4-H’ers who participated in this activity increased their citizenship skills because they were able to see how a talent they had could be translated to a gift that could help improve their club/community. Fifty percent of the proceeds raised from each donation was given back to the 4-H’ers club and/or county. This year, 22 Iowa 4-H members took advantage of this opportunity and donated items that contributed $2,345 to the final auction total.

“$15,400 was raised through a ‘Fund a Need’ paddle auction to support youth attending National 4-H Congress. This

included a $7,500 pledge from Iowa Farm Bureau Federation,” stated Shelly Greving, marketing director for the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

Another successful piece for the evening came from the auction of 16 decadent desserts. These desserts raised an incredible amount of $7,770.

“When desserts were selling for $1,000 each, I knew it was going to be a great night for 4-H,” commented Greving. “We keep raising the bar every year.”

The business-formal event attracted a variety of business leaders, top 4-H donors and past trustees. Attendees included Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds, U.S. Representative Tom Latham, and many other 4-H supporters.

This event would not be possible without the generous bidding and unconditional support from the online bidders and attendees of the event. Before the gala even began, 250 online bids were made totaling $9,510.

Another important component to the success of the event was the generosity of our in-kind donors. We sincerely appreciate the support of Heuss Printing, Ames, for design and printing services; Daugherty Auction and Real Estate Services Inc., Adel, for their wonderful auction

talents; Freestyle, Des Moines, for providing entertainment throughout the event, Marla Claussen with Claussen Photography for the wonderful job she did documenting the event; and our Gala committee for all the work they did before, during and after the event. The largest and longest-running fundraising campaign conducted by Iowa 4-H members for 4-H

members had another successful year. The “4-H’ers, for 4-H Campaign” is the longest running youth philanthropy event for 4-H and raised $27,115.67 in 2012.

“This year, 427 clubs representing 85 counties raised funds to support Iowa youth,” said Kris Fish Kuhlmann, executive director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

In the past 27 years, Iowa 4-H members have contributed more than $700,000 to support Iowa 4-H programs and activities, Kuhlmann said. Iowa 4-H Youth Development is the youth program of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

“People and businesses invest money and resources in 4-H because they see the positive things 4-H does for Iowa families and communities,” added Scott Mortimer, president of the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

“It’s great to see that youth continue to step up with their financial support and demonstrate their dedication to the Iowa 4-H program and commitment to making a difference for others.”

Funds raised in the campaign help families involved in 4-H by providing financial assistance for program fees. The funds also help youth attend camps, conferences and other leadership activities.

The top fundraising counties for this year’s campaign were Webster, Johnson and Polk counties.

“This year’s campaign totals truly show the passion and dedication Iowa 4-H members have for this great program. I congratulate every person who was involved in this campaign,” Kuhlmann said.

A youth robotics challenge and a culinary challenge are two of the featured Iowa 4-H events at the 2012

Iowa State Fair. The Bratney Companies 4-H Robotics

Challenge and Cook This! 4-H Culinary Challenge return to the 4-H Exhibits Building for five days of competition.

This is an opportunity for any of Iowa’s youth to participate in science and cooking. Applicants do not have to be 4-H members to apply for these team challenges. However, at least one member of each team must be a 4-H’er. We are excited that many youth, even those who are not enrolled in 4-H, are participating this year.

Robotics Challenge August 10-11This third annual event takes place

Friday, August 10, for the junior division (grades 5-8) and Saturday, August 11, for the senior division (grades 9-12).

“Iowa youth will show off their robot designing and programming skills in this ‘real-time’ challenge,” said Holly Bignall, 4-H program coordinator with ISU Extension and Outreach Science, Engineering and Technology (E-SET). Robotics clubs or teams composed of 3 to 10 youth and up to two adult leaders/coaches may participate.

“Real time means your team arrives at the event not knowing what the challenges will be. The challenges are announced at the event and participants work in their

teams to design a robot to meet each of the challenges. At the end of the working period, teams enter the Challenge Field and set loose their robots to the cheers of spectators,” Bignall said.

“We appreciate Bratney Companies continued sponsorship of this event,” said Bignall. “Their dedication to helping youth develop skills is advancing our next generation of leaders in the areas of science and technology, which ultimately impacts the future of our state.”

Cook This! August 12-14This third annual 4-H culinary challenge

encourages 5th through 12th grade youth to demonstrate their creativity in food preparation as well as their knowledge of kitchen equipment, menu preparation and their ability to identify produce, cuts of meat and other food items. Eight teams will participate at each of three age levels.

The junior level competition (grades 5-6) takes place Sunday, August 12; the in-termediate level (grades 7-8) on Monday, August 13; and the senior level (grades 9-12) on Tuesday, August 14.

State 4-H Council ReunionThe Iowa 4-H Foundation is hosting a

State 4-H Council reunion for all current and former State Council members on Sat-urday, August 11th. The event will be held at the 4-H Exhibits Building from 6-8pm (following the Share the Fun show at 5pm).

Livestock ShowsNearly every day of the Iowa State Fair,

fairgoers will enjoy seeing 4-H livestock in the barns as well as competitive shows. More than 1,900 exhibitors will have over 3,000 entries in the Fair this year.

Exhibits and Activities Throughout the Fair, August 9-19

Every year the 4-H Exhibits Building features 3,000 exhibits from 4-H’ers around the state. That usually includes more than 800 photographs, an assortment of baked goods, fantastic furnishings and other unique items.

Each day of the fair, visitors to the 4-H Exhibits Building can watch educational pre-sentations and “Share-the-Fun” entertain-ment shows, and also participate in hands-on learning stations. There will be something to see and do every day of the fair.
