Today, we stand before the now prestigious Fourways High School on its 30th birthday. The FHS we know evolved from humble beginnings. In the short 30 years, the school has advanced into one of the most highly respected government academic institutions in the country, and has played a fundamental part of over 50 000 lives. Fourways displays admirable inclusivity through the incredible variety of sporting and cultural opportunities offered. Far from the ‘farm school’ of the 1990’s, Fourways now boasts world class facilities and equipment and has continued to evolve, incorporating the latest technology and resources to best prepare learners for the “real world”. However, the most commendable characteristic of FHS is its ability to create a family from a vast diversity of individuals. Fourways High School becomes a second home to its students. This year, on the 30th Birthday, we celebrate the opportunities that were created in these classrooms, the lives that have been changed on these school grounds, and the difference that has been made within these walls. In 2018, we celebrate every parent who furthered the growth of the school, every learner who represented the FHS Legends, and every dedicated staff member who nurtured this school into the success it is today. Fourways High School

Celebrating 30 Years of Excellence! In 1988, a ‘farm school’ was opened in the grounds surrounding Norscot Manor. College of Digital Photography inspires FHS photography club

The College of Digital Photography started out in 2007 with the desire to teach, motivate and inspire aspirant photographers to “get it right”. CODP provides a dynamic range of high quality part-time photography, video and editing courses. In 2012 they evolved to cater for those interested in pursuing photography as a career by developing a 6-month photography programme. As of 2015, they have campuses in both Saxonwold and Fourways, which are run by passionate, professional photographers. CODP has helped people from all walks of life to pursue their photography passions. This year, they did just that for Fourways High School by generously donating money towards our photography club’s new t-shirts and inspiring our talented photo team to reach for the stars. Along with a monetary donation, the college also donated a Fundamentals Course voucher worth R4500. After holding an in-house photo competition. Caleb John won the voucher with his stunning sunset photo. Congratulations to Caleb, and a BIG thank you to everyone at the College of Digital Photography for lending a helping hand and for inspiring our talented photographers. For more information about the college and the courses they offer, visit www.codp.co.za or pay them a visit on their upcoming open days at the Saxonwold campus on Friday 30th November from 15:00 – 21:00, and at the Fourways campus on Saturday 1st December from 09:30 – 13:00.

ATHLETICS

Potch Top 30 By Marcel Viljoen What a year of athletics it has been! Not only has Fourways retained ranking as one of the top schools in the co-ed schools athletics league but has also participated in a few other new competitions. As with every year there has been a few new kids on the block and we are very fortunate to have had a strong grade eight showing on the athletics tracks this year! The athletics team did not go unnoticed to outsiders and received an invitation as “emerging athletics school” to the Potch Top 30 meeting. This honour was grabbed with both hands and for the first time we were part of this meeting, widely acknowledged as the largest of its kind in the world. With over 2000 athletes representing more than 70 schools, the calibre of this two day meeting was never in doubt. A large percentage of the top junior athletes in South Africa represented their respective schools at the meeting. Quite a few of our athletes achieved personal bests including Jessica Lee (grade eight) who made the jump from sprints to the 1500m in a stunning run. Another grade eight athlete, Ethan McDougal, produced the school’s best performance of the weekend when he scored 993 points on the ABSA tables for his 200m sprint! In addition his 400m sprint not only produced another personal best, it was the second best performance of the weekend for Fourways. Two other Fourways athletes also scored over 800 points – Joshua Flanagan (100m and 200m) and Nadya Stolarczyk in the 800m girls U15. Fourways finished 17th in the B category and we are already planning towards a top 10 performance in 2019! On behalf of Fourways High School, we would like to thank Mr. Marvin Borkus of GEA Africa – South Africa for generously sponsoring branded t-shirts to facilitate our athletes and coaches. Your generosity in this regard is greatly appreciated and highly regarded by all involved. Yours Sincerely, Mrs. Jodi Selesnick (Marketing Manager).
