From The Deputy Principal’s Desk February 2017 Volume 1; Issue 16 Fourways High School At the beginning of each Academic year, we tend to reflect on the previous year. The highlight is when we acknowledge the achievements of our students at our Annual Awards Ceremonies. A list of prize winners is published in this newsletter and it is worth reminding ourselves that the achievements of these young ladies and gentlemen is largely due to their individual continued hard work and commitment across the board. We know that teachers should share some of the credit, but we are happy to stand back and applaud these deserving students. There has already been a lot of publicity regarding our very gratifying matric results from 2016. We are particularly pleased with the significant increase in the Bachelor’s Pass rate as this has been a focus area for a few years. On Friday 24 February, Mrs de Bruyn attended the District Awards Ceremony held at Hoërskool Linden. We are very proud to announce that Fourways High School was announced as the 3 rd placed school in the District behind Parktown Girls and Linden. We are therefore the Top Co-ed English Medium High School in Johannesburg North. Our current and past achievers have done us proud. Now we need to focus on maintaining or improving our standards going forward. Good standards are not just about the requirements of the curriculum, they are about shaping young people to think for themselves. In the words of Malcolm Forbes, “Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.” WATER POLO St Peter's College hosts the annual Old Petrian's tournament every year for the top girl's waterpolo playing schools in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Our 1st team girls had the privilege of being invited to this presgious event and of compeng against some of the strongest waterpolo playing schools in the country. Fourways High girls did us proud by their level of determinaon and drive throughout the tournament and held their heads high aſter every game.

SPORT

MIDMAR MILE (Tylor Andrew, Grade 12) On Friday 10 February 2017, a group of determined

and excited, most people would say mad, swimmers left for an awesome trip to Durban to

swim the Midmar Mile. Yes, that’s right, one mile in a dam, 1600 meters, or to put it in simpler terms,

64 lengths in a 25m pool. To many, it might seem

impossible, but not for us 36 swimmers. Bearing in mind that the majority of these swimmers had

never swum in a dam before, everyone finished, and all in under one hour.

We were accompanied by six great teachers, namely Mr and Mrs Clay; Mr Arndt; Ms Skillicorn;

Mrs Maritz and Ms Rykenberg, who all (other than Mrs Clay) braved the race and completed it with the

rest of us.

Mrs Clay, our “Mom”, was the photographer for the

weekend. Swimming the Midmar Mile was only one of the few things that we got up to over the

incredible weekend. We spent many hours on the beach, a whole day at Ushaka Marine World and

enjoyed free time at the South Coast Shopping Mall

and in our hotel rooms.

Well done to all the crazy swimmers—WE DID IT! It was definitely a weekend to remember and

absolutely recommend that it is done again.

District 10 Track & Field Championships

A small but excited team of athletes made history on Saturday as the first Fourways High team to

participate at the District 10 Track & Field

Championships. Introduced for the first time in 2017 some of these athletes participated in the

respective events for the very first time. Familiar faces were seen in the track events.

Nicholas van Zijl came 5th in the 1500m boys under 17 in a personal best of 4m35sec. Elena Renton

came fourth in the girls under 17 100m and 200m sprint events. New kids on the block, twin brother

and sister Gary and Jada van Staden, also made their presence felt as Gary came 4th in both the

800m boys U15 (2m19), and the 400m (59sec).

Jada, who actually specialises in the hurdles events, dominated her girls U15 400m race winning it in

57,4sec! Both Jada and Gary will still be under 15 in 2018 which makes their performances even more

outstanding.

Other notable performances include Sarah

Shabalala (3rd in U10 shotput), Dylan Middleton (2nd U19 javelin), Aeron Brombacher (2nd U15 long

jump, 3rd high jump), and Daniel Pieterse (3rd U17

shotput).

Fourways achieved nine medals and podium positions and showed that we will be a force to be

reckoned with in the years to come!
