Dear Friends, Almost always in my bulletin article I am privileged to share with you good news about events and projects here at St. Mary and St. Anne. I'm sorry to say that this week is an exception. This past Monday morning we opened St. Mary Church and discovered something sad and disturbing: the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament inside had been stolen during the night. The tabernacle is, as I wrote just a couple of weeks ago in my bulletin article, the "secure and worthy place" where the precious gift of Christ's body is reserved outside Mass. Though the beautiful brass tabernacle at St. Mary was heavy, locked, and bolted down, thieves managed to pry it away from its base and steal it. Neither the method of entry nor the motive is known at this time. Both the Archdiocese and the Marysville Police Department have been notified. As we learn more we will share it with you. Our hope is that the tabernacle and Blessed Sacrament are safely recovered and returned. This desecration--whether intentional or not--is a very serious matter. We will be working hard to ensure that this does not happen again. This includes re-keying the church locks and other security measures. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we make the necessary changes to our facility and practices. Please join me in praying for the safe return of the tabernacle and the Blessed Sacrament, as well as for the thieves and all those traumatized by this theft. In Christ, Fr. Tom

Queridos amigos,

Fr. Tom

Father Tom McMichael, Parish Priest / Padre Tom McMichael, Sacerdote De La Parroquia

Update: Today, Tuesday morning, facilities manager John Hodgins discovered the damaged tabernacle and its contents on church grounds. We will be evaluating the damage to the tabernacle and the sacred vessels in coming days. The Body of Christ was carefully gathered and reverently disposed of as prescribed by canon law and Catholic practice. Thank you for your prayers and support. Fr.

The Daily Prayer For Priests -St. Therese of the Child Jesus O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful and tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields. for your tempted priests; for your lonely and desolate priest for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me; the priests who absolved me from my sins; the priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; the priests who taught and instructed me; all the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time and in eternity. Amen.

Candlemas

Thursday, February 2nd is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This is the day, tra-ditionally, when candles are blest, both for use in homes and those used in the church for worship. Because of this, the day is often re-ferred to as Candlemas. The Presentation al-so draws us back once again to Christmas– the presentation, as required by the Mosaic law, occurred forty days after Jesus’ birth. Please join us at the 10:30am Mass for a procession and the blessing of candles.

Quote of the Week

“St Paul tells us: ‘He saved us, not because of deeds done by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit" (Ti 3: 5).’ A washing of regeneration: Baptism is not only a word, it is not only some-thing spiritual but also implies matter. All the realities of the earth are involved. Baptism does not only concern the soul. Human spirituality invests the totality of the person, body and soul. God's action in Jesus Christ is an action of universal efficacy. Christ took flesh and this continues in the sacraments in which matter is taken on and becomes part of the divine action….Christ is never without the Church. In Baptism we are adopted by the Heavenly Father, but in this family that he establishes there is also a mother, Mother Church. Man cannot have God as Father, the ancient Christian writers were already saying, unless he has the Church as mother. We perceive in a new way that Christianity is not mere-ly an individual, spiritual reality, a simple subjective decision that I take, but something real and concrete, we could also say some-thing material. Adoption as children of God, of the Trinitarian God, is at the same time being accepted into the family of the Church, it is admission as brothers and sisters into the great fami-ly of Christians. And only if, as children of God, we are integrated as brothers and sisters into the reality of the Church can we say "Our Father", to our Heavenly Father. This prayer always implies the "we" of God's family.” -Pope Benedict XVI, Homily for the Baptism of the Lord, 2007

Q. What does the Church teach about when infants should be baptized?

A: The Code of Canon Law, which is the universal law of the Roman Catholic Church, tells us that “Parents are obliged to take care that infants are baptized in the first few weeks [after birth]; as soon as possible after the birth or even before it, they are to go to the pastor to request the sacrament for their child and to be properly prepared for it.” (Canon 867, emphasis add-ed) We baptize infants not only to remove the stain of original sin, but even more so to join them to the Church, to make them tru-ly children of God, sons and daughters in the Son, Christ Jesus. This is such a precious gift, and this is the reason that the Church says we have an obligation not to delay the baptism of our children– why we want to deprive them any longer than necessary of this beautiful and most important gift? What we believe about baptism leads directly into its practice– that it is a free gift of God, something we cannot earn, that gives us the most amazing privilege– to be a member of the Church!
