The Word of God

Prelude Jiji Park Prayer for Social-Distance Worship

Almighty God of the Cross and loving God of Community, we are different as the Church today, but we know you are with us. We remember especially that we are the body of Christ in your suffering world. We know that our vocation is to be the light of this Christ whose Body we are. Give us courage to be the Church as we keep our minds on what matters, which is to keep loving the World which you have called good. Buildings crumble, the church year passes, but your church endures from generation to generation. Make this day a feast day of your protection, your plenty, your purpose, your plan, and your peace. All this we ask as we pray with all the saints and with one another. Amen.

Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Reading

Reader: A reading from Jeremiah 28:5-9

The prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and all the people who were standing in the house of the Lord; and the prophet Jeremiah said, “Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord fulfill the words that you have prophesied, and bring back to this place from Babylon the vessels of the house of the Lord, and all the exiles. But listen now to this word that I speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people. The prophets who preceded you and me from ancient times prophesied war, famine, and pestilence against many countries and great kingdoms. As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the Lord has truly sent the prophet.”

Reader: The Word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Please join in singing Song Between the Readings Psalm 89:1-4,15-18

1 Your love, O Lord, for ever will I sing; * from age to age my mouth will proclaim your faithfulness. 2 For I am persuaded that your love is established for ever; * you have set your faithfulness firmly in the heavens. 3 "I have made a covenant with my chosen one; * I have sworn an oath to David my servant: 4 'I will establish your line for ever, * and preserve your throne for all generations.'"

Page 8: Fourth Sunday after Pentecost June 28, 2020 10:00 a.m. · 6/6/2020  · Let all around us be peace. Let all around us be peace. Words: David Haas (b. 1957), based on a Navaho prayer;

7

15 Happy are the people who know the festal shout! * they walk, O Lord, in the light of your presence. 16 They rejoice daily in your Name; * they are jubilant in your righteousness. 17 For you are the glory of their strength, * and by your favor our might is exalted. 18 Truly, the Lord is our ruler; * the Holy One of Israel is our King.

The Second Reading

Reader: A reading from Romans 6: 12-23

Do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. No longer present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.

What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.

When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. So what advantage did you then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple-- truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”

The Message The Reverend Elizabeth Keeler

The Nicene Creed Prayer Book Page 358

standing

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please be seated.

The Holy Communion

This is the time we remember that Jesus died on the cross for us and then was made alive again by God so we would always know how much God loves us. We ask for God to make the bread and the cup holy with God’s spirit for us so we will be filled up and made strong with God’s love to do God’s work in the world. **Currently, as a faithful community in solidarity with one another as the body of Christ, we will fast from the taking of Holy Communion and engage in Spiritual Communion in response to maintaining healthy social distance, and in honoring the integrity of the sacrament. **

The Presider continues

Presider: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

People: We remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory.

Presider: And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray…

People and Presider

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Verse 1 When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,

When sorrows like seabillows roll;

Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,

It is well, it is well with my soul.

Refrain

It is well with my soul,

It is well, it is well with my soul.

Verse 2

Though satan should buffet, though trials should come,

Let this blest assurance control,

That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,

And has shed His own blood for my soul.

Verse 4

And, Lord, hast the day when the faith shall be sight,

The clouds be rolled back as a scroll,

The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend,

“Even so” it is well with my soul.

We pray for schools, teachers, administrators, cleaning crews, bus drivers, crossing guards and security patrols and students. We pray for migrants at the border, families separated that children will be reunited with their families. We pray for women and men in uniform: those deployed, fire fighters, EMT workers, nurses, doctors, police officers; government workers and all who teach, protect, lead, care for and guide. We pray for the vestry, ministries and staff at Epiphany, and all who share their time, talent and treasure in the life of Epiphany; the Food Pantry; the guests and helpers with Hypothermia Shelter; the Food4Thought volunteers; the Hot Meals ministry; the Sunday School, Sunday Circle Youth Group, Confirmation for Youth, the Episcopal 101 participants and all who seek and learn. We pray for the Jung family in India; Shamika in Great Britain and all who travel and work. We pray for Archbishop Justin; Presiding Bishop Michael; Bishops of the Diocese of Virginia, including retired Bishop Shannon, and Bishops Susan, Jennifer, Bob, Ted, David, and Jim and all those who gather as people of faith. We pray for the leaders of our country: President Donald and Vice President Michael, the Cabinet members, and the Congress and Supreme Court and Ralph our governor. We pray for all who suffer from gun violence, racism, famine, flood, fire, war, and especially all those suffering from COVID-19. We pray for those who do not know the experience of practicing their faith in freedom. We pray for our enemies. We pray for those who suffer hurt and loss; those who grieve. We pray for our partners in ministry and friends of Epiphany: Church of Christ, Community of Faith UMC, New Hope Baptist, our friends with the Institute of Islamic-Turkish Studies, friends with the Ezher Bloom Mosque, the Boyle School of Dance, Epiphany Preschool, Scout Troop 1257, girl scout troops, our friends with Promise for Haiti in Pignon, and Hope and Resurrection Secondary School in South Sudan.
